Will he ever settle down????

My puppy is now almost 5 months old. He is NEVER still unless he is exhausted and asleep. I am not exaggerating this. He runs and bounces off the walls and wants to play constantly. Then, I am exhausted within an hour after I am out of bed from following him around and trying to control him. I either have to put him in his kennel (a large one outside--which we built for him) or back in his crate to get him to calm down and go to sleep. He just will not sit happily chewing on anything at all--not toys or rawhides or kongs or anything. He has to be running and jumping and all over me. I cannot do ANYTHING until he is asleep and confined. He is the cutest thing--but a 40 pound puppy! I plan to have him neutered in a couple of months--maybe that will help?? I so want him to sit with me sometimes so I can just pat him and enjoy his company. But he has made this completely impossible. I feel sure it is my fault and I am doing something wrong. Help! I need suggestions. It makes me so sad to have to put him out and away from me so I can do normal household activities.....

Hi - You may want to check with your vet to see if you can go ahead and have him neutered. Sometimes 5 months is ok. Maybe that will help.
I would recommend an obedience class (positive reinforcement training)! He will be able to exert some of that energy in a positive manner - and you will develop a strong connection with him!
i know ive said this a million times.... but i work at a day care for dogs and bring walter with me twice a week. now when i get home from work and am exhausted walter is just as tired as i am.
alo 5 months is really the perfect age to start socializing your pup, i would look into dog parks that you can take him to a couple times a week (he can run around like crazy and you can stand back and watch) or if you have the financial resources a doggie day care 2-3 times a week is the perfect solution... plus your pup gets to make friends and romp around all day while you work... then instead of harassing you to play when you get home he will just want to cuddle!
Hi,
Just wanted to respond to Lil Walty moms post!!! That's awesome about Walty's change in behavior and I've been wondering if it would work out that you were able to take him to work with you on a regular basis! Great news!

She is absolutely correct, they need to be with friends either four or two legged as having a large yard or pen and leaving the dog on their own doesn't excercise them at all. They usually sit by the back door, gate, fence and wait for you. Trust me on this Merlin was Hyper, Hyper , Hyper and with two older dogs at home and four cats I needed for him to spend his energy elsewhere so he'd come home exhaused. The puppy park was the perfect solution...they run, they chase, they play and they exhaust themselves that I quarantee you when you arrive home they are the most docile trainable pups you've ever seen.

If there is no doggie daycare, then a doggie park, or one on one time with you to make him run., even your backyard but you set time for the play each day. He'll look forward to this as he needs something to do. Herders and Working dogs need to keep busy and "work" otherwise they become bored and destructive and have a tendecy to be underfoot.

Yes, it's a bit of work finding the time daily to do this but again please trust me that in years to come you will reap the benefits tenfold. Good luck with your sheepie!
Thanks so much for all the good advice! I love the idea of a doggie park! I didn't even know there was any such thing. We don't have any nearby--but what a neat idea! We do go for walks everyday and I throw the ball for him in the back yard so he can run as much as he wants. I will just keep on trying. Thanks again for all the responses....I do appreciate this site!!!
