Chasing Geese

Phoebe is at it again. My backyard butts up to a golf course and pond. Before you get to the pond I have 200 X 750 feet of my properety. Since she was a puppy she has been great on and off lead she has listened to stay, sit etc. and has never pulled away.

Yesterday the family of geese were out with the babies. Phoebe has always ignored them until yesterday and this morning. Keep in mind these geese are 750 feet away from her. She was on a free yesterday playing soccer with the boys and just took off to chase the geese then went jumping right into the golf course pond after them.

After getting her out of the pond with a treat as encourgement because she just would not listen to come she was back on a short lead for the rest of the day. She was good all day out side after that until last night we were our running and playing ball and she did it again. She was on lead too. Just pulled the lead right out of my hands and ran and jumped into the pond, the geese were not there this time. At 10 PM she was getting her second bath for the day.

Well this morning I always have my coffee outside on the patio with both Annie and Phoebe. They stay together and do the potty thing and immediately come back and lay on the patio so we can share breakfast. Since I didn't want to give her another bath I put her on lead and stuck the lead around the foot of the chair I was sitting on. She pulled the chair right out from under me and took off for the pond again. After pulling myself up from the ground, coffee spilled all over me and running after her needless to say she beat me to the pond. So at 6:45 AM she got the third bath.

This is going to be a big problem. Yesterday the golfers thought it was funny but that is not going to be the case all the time. Especially since it is the 9th hole and the collie is running around the pond barking at the OES annoying everyone within a block of hearing distance. I don't want her in the water especially that water. She has her own little pool on the patio but she has been ignoring that probably because there is clean water in it every day. I don't want her to be on a chain all the time she needs to get rid of energy and we are not allowed to have fences.

I need all the suggestions I can get on how to stop this,

hAS SHE/HE BEEN TO TRAINING CLASS? I WOULD SUGEST THAT AND MAYBE A LONG LEAD IN THE YARD. I STRUNG IT BETWEEN TO TREES AT EACH END OF THE YARD SO OLIVE CAN RUN, BUT NOT OFF THE PROPERTY. I CAN STILL THROW THE BALLA ND STUFF BUT IT KEEPS HER CONTAINED. I HAVE NO FENCE EITHER AND OLIVE WILL SIT WITH ME UNTILL SOME EVIL SPIRIT TAKES OVER AND WHAM SHE IS OFF TO THE RACES. JUST A THOUGHT. I KNOW THE GOLF COURSE COMMUNITES HAVE STRICT RULES ON WHAT CAN BE IN YOUR BACK YARD, BUT THE RUN COULD BE A CLEAR ON SO IT IS NOT NOTICED. JUST MAK ESURE IT TALL ENOUGH SO THE KIDS DON'T CLOSELINE THEMSELVES.
Well I was here before the Golf Course and it is my private property at least half of the pond is.

Yes she has been to training classes in fact she lived with my neighbors brother for four days he is a K 9 trainer. she's wonderful this just started yesterday She is only 17 months old but it seems she comes up with something new all the time.

I don't have tree's to tie a run to. I am hoping this is just because she discoverd the geese.

I was wondering about the invisable fences too. She loves to run with the Collie there is so much room for them to play and run. The geese are the new thing for her and they are nasty
I'd say that going after the geese is probably activating the herding drive in her... You could try taking her to a herding class or 2 to learn some commands for dealing specifically with chasing other animals... That's not really anything covered in your typical obediance class :) Otherwise, you'll probably have to keep her on a long line clipped to something on your property (Or yourself) when she's out while the geese are breeding. If it was me... I'd prefer to do the herding training, because it is something fun you can do together :)
First - you have my sympathies!! Three bathes in two days!!

Now that she's discovered the joy of chasing geese, it will indeed be a hard habit to break. Don't know where you're located, but don't the geese normally fly north soon?
They are nasty critters and somewhat cantankerous, too.

I wish I had some suggestions for you, but off the top of my head, I can't think of a thing. I really don't think an invisible fence would work, though. She'd probably just blow right through it in "hot pursuit" and then be afraid to come back in her yard. :(

Hopefully someone here has some experience and words of wisdom to share. :)
Karen & I must've been posting at the same time. That Herding Training sounds like a good suggestion!!
Does anyone live in Illinois that knows where they do this type of training she would be a natural at it. She herds the soccer team all the time
Here is a stockdog (herding) website that has lists of national and regional clubs. Someone there should be able to help you!!!

this is in southern wisconsin, so depending where you are in illinois it might be close enough. i have never been there but a few people i know go there quite often and absolutely love it. good luck!
You have my sympathies too. But, I did have to laugh at the mental picture of you laying on the patio covered in coffee. You probably could have won some money if you had that on video. Sorry I don't have any suggestions.
Oh my God she is soooo bad. this morning I had to sit down so she would not pull me to the pond. Ron suggested I buy a pinch collar. This afternoon I went to Pet smart and bought one with Phoebe, had to get the right fit. Put it on her and she sat down and cried when I tried to lead her out of the store with it. Oh she is so used to going there the employees know her on a first name basis they were laughing and of course giving her cookies. After 15 minutes of trying I took the collar off and she walked on the lead just fine and went to the car like a queen.

Then I took her home put the collar back on and we played tug with her sitting down ono the drive way not moving, then she rolled on her side and refused to move. I had to try and pick her up to move her. ok Phoebe is 82 pounds I am 103 she can't fit under my kitchen table because she is so tall and I am 5 foot tall. The neighbor came over to help me laughing all the time.

Once we got her up I took her out back with a horse lunge line as a lead. Nice and long right, she was doing so good actually played under the sprinkler for about 30 minutes ran with the other dogs she was being so good. I eased up on the lead just a little and she took off and went swimming again.

Well now I went and bought one of those post you screw in the ground and hooked the lead to it so the only place she is going is in about a 8 foot circle. She can run all she wants in a circle but until I figure this one out that is where she is staying. Now she is sitting out there barking non stop.

I have never had such a stubborn dog in my whole life.

As far as coffee being all over me it was funny but yesterday was worse. She was swimming in a pond on a golf course I was calling her running around the pond like a goof and the collie was running after me barking at her. We look like the Clampets of the neighborhood
You have to watch those post that screw into the ground too. Puddy managed to "unscrew" his at the camp one weekend. Thought we had him good and controlled until he was sitting beside me with the leash and the post still attached. You just can't win them all I guess.

I am sure that the scenario by the pond was funny too. Nice to know that we are not the only "Clampets" around. We have had our share of those moments too.
Thank for letting me know. I usually don't let the dogs out unless I or one of the boys are out with them. Knowing her she will find a way to pull it out.

I called the herding group in Wisconsin waiting for a call back hopefully she will have some good idea's. Phoebe's parents are cattle herding dogs maybe it will help. I know she's not bored. She goes to soccer four days a week and to the pet park every night so exercise is not the answer.
You have a swimmer on your hands! Wow - good luck with everything - I hope everything gets figured out soon. She sounds like a spirited girl! I wish I had more advice to offer you. I know a lot of people in our community have the invisible fence and it works well for them - but I would also be afraid she would just take the hit and run to get to the pond.
I called the K-9 trainner she lived with for four days for training and asked him what he thought I should do. He said to buy her a life jacket and take her to the lake swimming. He thinks she just loves the water. He said when he had her with him. She would jump on the horse trough and try to get in.

Pat Smart does not sell large life jackets for dogs. But I did find a boating store that does. Do you think it will work???? My girl friend has a small lake behind her house. Do you think she will ok swimming. Guess I better be ready to jump in.

I never thought I would be doing these things with a dog at 54 yrs old I am too old for this. Thank god for a sense of humor
I think that sounds like a keen idea. And,yes, I firmly believe God has a great sense of humour.
We had a 40 ft tie out for our dogs when we lived in our townhome and could not have a fence. The tie out was anchored to a metal piece that my ex mounted on the concrete foundation on the outermost corner of the house. The dogs could go 40 ft in any direction. It was wonderful.
DTRost: Invisible Fence! They really do work. We had to get one even though we have a chain link fence because Truman jumped the fence. Try it - it will save you a lot of grief and you won't be having to bathe Phoebe all the time!
I have seen invisible fences work with some real hard-headed dogs.

Deskwench - I looked at your pics-our cat is marked like yours. He is black where yours is orange. The guys in our family named him Tip-up. They ice fish and he walks around with his black tail in the air. They thought he looked like a tip-up flag 8O . Men.............
Phoebe is a swimmer, she loves the water. She had a little baby pool on the Patio that had to be upgraded to a teenage size pool. It is only about 2 feet deep so she can stand up in it. When she goes out in the morning, afternoon, evening she heads for her pool now instead of the pond. Since she is a jummper she just pops in and out whenever she wants. I have taken to cover the pool at night because I end up with wet dog in my bed but she does not seem to mind as long as it's availble to her all day.

Yesterday she tried to head for the lake next to the Soccer field we were at but the pinch collar stopped that immediately.

At least the pool has clean water for her. It's really funny after she's all wet and dripping she lays on the patio in the sun. Guess she thinks she's sun bathing. Grooming was a problem since I brush her out but I put three cap full of Downey fabric softener in the pool and it stops the tangling of her hair a trick my groomer taught me.
I love the fabric softener idea! I'll be adding it to our dog pool too. :D
