OES puppy and cats!

Have just got my beautiful 12wk old OES, but have a 12 year old cat at home. Are there any tricks that anyone knows of that will help these two live in harmony? Today the cat got loose and the puppy went after the cat who found safety up a tree! I have them separated now but would like everybody happy! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanx

Hi Chloe:

Hopefully some one has answered your question by now...however, if not I'd strongly recommend formal training. Our sheepdog joined us in July and we have nine cats (yes nine). To him, if it moved it was a toy. So he joyfully chased all of them. Since our cats were used to our previous sheepdog most of them were not bothered by this. However, we wanted to stop the behavior before it got bad. So, whenever he chased a cat, we told him "no" and then "leave it". In addition, we set up a couple of rooms that were blocked off with baby gates to give the cats a place to go when the dog got too rambunctious. Due to the sheepdog's stubborness it took some time (he still reverts occasionally) but he has improved tremendously.

Of course it doesn't help when our youngest cat starts to chase the dog.....but that's another story.

Good Luck
Jennifer
Has anyone else been sucessful raising an OES with a kitty? My girlfriend is a bona fide cat person and wants to add a kitty to the family when she and I and "Alice" the dog move in together this summer. I thought introducing Alice to a kitten rather than a cat might help her to get accustomed. As it is now Alice loves to chase cats. Although I'm not sure she would know what to do if she ever actually caught one, the cats are plenty frightened when she leaps out at them. I'd love to hear from others who have an OES and kitty household.

Hi Nick,
We have two OES's . Harley is 5 years old, Oakley is 4 months. One mixed breed Lolli , 4 years old and 4 cats, ranging from 6 months to 19 years old.We have a big house. They all get along fine. The dogs have their moments when they bark at the cats and chase them if they get near their food . The cats have a kitty door that goes to our basement so they can escape if they choose. It took the puppy a while to stop chasing them . A few swipes on the nose with the claws fixed that. Now he stays back a hundred feet and barks at them. Ha Ha.
I don't know if that helped you at all ....
Hey Nick!
We have one oes, Nelson and one cat, Twister. The very night Nelson came home with us we had him up on the couch, in our arms, smooching, making over him, Twister just kept his distance although he looked very hurt when we had Nelson on our laps (since that's usually his place).

All I can say is time has helped these two. We don't leave them together when Nelson gets hyper because, well, he leaps and prances and wants to play and Twister, being in his 60's (in cat years) just shuns the happy toddler, or swats at him, OR (if he's feeling playful) chases him! But they've been getting better with eachother, and more accepting.

I'd say giving equal attention to both is very important too. I like to pet Twister with one hand and Nelson with other at the same time. They'll be watching eachother and I'll rub both of their ears and then their noses, it always reminds of that scene in the Disney's Tarzan when the mom gorilla touches Tarzan's hand and heart then her own just to show she's the same as him.

Finally everyone's needs a 'sanctuary' and that includes Twister. We couldn't find any baby gates that Twister could get through and Nelson couldn't so we put up a card board poster with a small hole cut through it. Now Nelson can't get into the back hall's bathroom/litter box 'area' but Twister can, the same with the steps.

Well I hope this helps you out! I better go check on 'the babies' and make sure Twister isn't beating up on Nelson...just kidding! They love eachother!...well....they're gettin there!
