Vet`s results on Pisco

Well...the Vet says that although in general he is OK (he`s checked him inside out/head to tail :) ....
the problem is that his stomach, intestines and pancreas are swollen but no infection....the cause is he has an unnormal digestion, he doesn`t process his food correctly and does lack a digestive ensyma plus the fact that he has mini parasites (very rare in dogs) that are very hard to erradicate...since he can`t tolarate powerfull meds due to his stomach he will take first his tummy and pancreas meds and in a month his parasite meds (if all is well)...he has a severe gastrointestinal case so the vet recomended to change his food ASAP....the only one found here is Hill`s science diet I/D ...I am not too keen on changing his food to this one since I read it has too many by-products and because this is not a puppy food and it was recomended to me to keep him on puppy food until he was 18 months...so the vet told me to do this for at least 6 months....check him and then see if I change him back to proplan or another that is good...the vet says his stool will probably never be very firm and he might suffer from a tender stomach all his life...he has to have 6 months check-ups to see if has created his own ensymas...

a couple of anecdotes on this where my hubby asking the vet if this was the cause of Pisco not getting taller...the vet said it probably interfeered but he is still growing so maybe he`ll pick up :)
and the vet was very impress by my knowledge of the breed and asked me to go with Pisco to his TV show (he has a segment in a show about house, homes and animals) and talked a little about the breed and Pisco....so guys I have homework ...LOL...don`t know when yet because he has most of them programed already but it will probably be around last days of June. :)

I hope all works out for you and Pisco... I am happy that there's not immediate problem, and I hope that working through his tummy problems will go smoothly.

;) Don't forget to mention your friends at www.oes.org ;)
i know on certain webistes you can have dogfood shipped to you, so maybe if you and your vet agree on a good dog food you can look into that (it would probably be very costly... but its just a suggestion)

i hope pisco gets better soon, keep us updated on him... and the tv show!
I hope everything goes well for you and pisco... I wouldn't be worried about hill science diet, it is an excellent quality food, and when I worked at the vet's I saw many many unhealthy animals become very healthy after only one month of being on science diet. Same goes for Iams and Eukanuba. They're all expensive, but you get what you pay for, and Iams even has a money back guarantee if your dog is not healthier in 4 weeks they'll refund your money. These premium foods are better because they are scientifically formulated, I have seen the Iams research center that conducts feeding trials and testing, it is amazing how much effort these companies put into their products. They don't have preservatives, they use vitamin E to preserve instead, which is better for them than chemicals and it's something they need for skin and coat anyway. As far as by products, they have far less than non premium brands... the non premium brands might say just chicken as an ingredient, but chances are they don't even know what part of the chicken went into the bag, and it's the chickens left over that weren't good enough for people. Premium foods usually use human-grade meat, and the ratio of meat to vegetable protiens is higher. The protiens are formulated to be easily digested as well, where as in cheaper brands all they care about is the percentage they can claim on the bag, not the quality of it. A cheap brand might say 26% protien, but as little as 10% of that is digestible. Premium foods are more expensive because most of what the dog eats is digested and converted into useable nutrition. Cheaper foods are not really cheaper because the dog is pooping most of it away, more stools, and usually looser stools as well.
Anyway.... there's my two cents...lol ... sorry to ramble....
Poor Pisco. Its hearbreaking it is to have health problems that we can't just fix.

On the loose stool question did you see the post that Aging Right sent me about rice water. It sounds like a great and natural remedy. I haven't tried it yet but I am planning to cook up some rice tonight for this:

Quote:
rice water is the water that you cooked the rice in before it is boiled down completely. A fourth to a half of a cup will help solidify most loose stools and give the intestines a chance to heal. And it is easy to digest. Cooked white rice and broth will also work, in moderation. I wouldn't add any meat ...

On the food question, I understand that the problem with most commercial food is that the ingredient percentages vary from batch to batch depending on the ingredient prices. In other words, your dog gets a different food a least every new bag -- of course those with sensitive digestions have diarrhea.

The other problem is that ash is used as a filler and it is not healty for their bladders. (My last dog, a female Chesapeake had constant bladder infections until she went on better food.)

Have you investigated cooking your own food? Maybe just for a month or two to try to help get Pisco's digestion settled? My sister has had great luck with the raw diet for her dog who has cancer and heart disease. If you are investigating raw food please read everything you can find, pro and con, it is quite controversial.

How fun to be on TV with Pisco. Henry was in a commercial for his doggie day care. But he is the same humble boy he was before he became a star.

Good luck to you and Pisco!
Thanks guys for all the support.....Yes I will try hill`s for a bit...if it works on him then that will be it...
Rice water...ìt does work I tried it with Pisco and it does work on his stool...but doesn`t solve his ensyma failure.
Ron ..how can I forget my friends at the forum :D most of the things I know it`s from you guys so don`t worry you will all be mention ;)
Vero,

So glad to hear you got the second opinion and Pisco is heading in the right direction with his health. :D

I love the new Avatar, SO PISCO! and 1 year old on the 25th WOW! 8O

Good luck with our next future TV star. 8)
Vero how exciting, we have a TV star amongst our mist 8O Hey Ron can work you magic and Video stream it  or what ever they call it (just kidding) I hope Pisco problems work themselves out! Hills Science Diet does have puppy food, Drake is on Science hills for Large breed puppies. They also have small bites for puppies and I think they have a all natural dog food but have no experience with it. I asked my vet yesterday about food and she said some dogs tend to do better on some foods and others on other foods (boy I am sounding like Ron :? ) She said one of her puppies did well on Hills while another did better on Ekunba (how ever you spell that, I hope you know what I mean). She said to make sure Drakes food was a better brand and was for large breed puppies because it was really important to controll their growth and not have them get to big to fast. Also that as a puppy Drake would look slim but would start to fill out as he got older. Drake at 17 weeks weighs 35 lbs. Also I checked out the Pet Smart web site and they ship food but I am not sure about out of the states or how much. I hope this helps 8)
wow... Drake is 35 lbs?? Dancer is 16 weeks and only weighs 22 lbs but the vet said she was doing well.... She still doesn't eat much though, but over 2 cups a day now which is much better.... the only food she will eat at all is Iams puppy....
can see Pisco stealing the spotlight and probably being asked to star in his own show. He's so adorable and beautiful looking from all the pics I've seen of him. Good luck and I can't wait to hear all about it!!!

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble medically and I pray you will find the right solution for Pisco's tummy problems. I wish I knew the right solution but all I can offer is my heart felt support and wish you the best of luck.

Thinking of You and Pisco
Willowsprite, Drake is a big guy but I would not worry about dancer if the vet said she is doing well. I read some really good articles about how to tell if you puppy is over or under weight. Instaed of going by the weight alone go by the body shape. According to the article I have been reading in the AKC new puppy edition at 3 to 6 months a puppy should be losing their puppy tummy and becoming more like an adult dogs body shape. They should have a defined waist just forward of the hips and you should be able to feel their ribs. You should then adjust the amount you feed your puppy in accordance with their metabolism and pups size. I think of it this way, what looks good on a person that is 5'7 does not look good on a person that is 5'2. And not every one that is 5'7 can eat the same as another person who is 5'7 with out gaining weight. Boy I hope that makes sense! I also saw a really good poster of this in my vets office. From everything I have read, it is really important to control you puppy's weight and growth to prevent health problems later. I hope this helps 8)
Yes I`ve been told the same thing! especially with this breed since you can have both big and small/pettite dogs.....and usually the girls are a bit smaller....
by the way...Pisco is eating so good!!!! so I guess science diet (prescription diet I/D) it is for him :) the vet told me to mix his old food with the new one and guess what he is eating 5 cups!!!! :) (before he only ate at the most 3) ....his stool is a bit better...and yesterday he treated himself to a bag of chips...before he would eat one of two usually out of my hand but now....Ahhhhhhh...just stole the bag. :D
That's great Vero! I'm so glad to hear that.... lol, and the bag of chips certainly shows his appetite has increased! lol
Dancer has decided to go off her food again the last couple days *sigh*
She'll lick the canned food off the hard food and leave the rest. I leave out kibble for her at all times, but she only ate about 1 cup yesterday and hasn't touched it yet today. Yesterday she also ate one small chocolate easter egg, not enough to harm her, but probably enough to upset her system.
I am so glad to here that Vero may be on the mends :D Willowsprite here is what I think and this is what I would try with Dancer. If she prefers can food over dry food then I would give her mostly canned food on top of the dry food. I feed Drake a can of puppy food with his dry food in the morning and he loves it. You may just need to do that with every meal. I find that Drakes does try to pick around the dry food but he still eats some of it anyway. Maybe for some reason Dancer can only tolerate canned food so I would just keep her with that if you are concerned about how much she eat. I would just get creaative with what she will eat and will not eat and let that guide you. I have two sons that will eat anything and everything and are in very good shape. Then I have my daughter who eats like a bird and is in great shape but it drives me insane. My kids pediatrician just keeps on telling me my boys ar every healthy and are eating like they should and Victorria is growing and eating as much as she needs too. So I would just get creative and find that happy ground with Dancer no matter how much it drives yoo crazy. Hope this helps 8)
Glad to hear you found some answers. The boy will do fine on Hill's diet. I had to switch Abbi from puppy food to adult at 6 months because she was having problems. It worked out great.

But give him a hug and walk him a lot. He may need to go potty a bit more now. When he starts taking the parasite meds, don't walk him in a public dog park to do his business. It might make other doggies sick. So you may want to start a new potty routine ... because you will not want it in your yard either. His poop should be considered a medical hazard and scooped when possible, unless the vet is absolutley sure the eggs of the parasite will be killed also.

It sounds like the new food and meds are working out and you were right to be concerned.
Funny thing about the rice water remedy ... I thought I got it from you Vero? Whoever contributed, {Maybe Danik? } THANKS!!!
It works great for Abbi too. I have even used it with my little girl, Angela recently.
LOL yes it was me who gave you the rice water remedy...and it does work...over here it is used a lot on babies and toddlers since it`s natural and won`t harm them on the contrary :) ...I have taken it a couple of times myself and it works!
don`t worry about the stool ...I know the drill been there with my other dogs(when I had them) ...Pisco was in for a quick check and it seems his stomach/intestines are doing much better...not so swollen.....and yes the monster has picked up in his hunger....He`s even asking for food now, dog food ;)...before I had practically to beg him to eat....now he eats all his ratio and asks for more....of course although I am tend to giving him more since I love to see him eat...I know I can`t let him fatten up so I tend to go easy on that...

Pisco never tolerated canned food...he has even left a lot of it and I ended giving away some cans I had left....
Have you had Dancer checked? ... I guess after I have gone with Pisco I advise you to go to the vet`s....maybe she is just the canned food type or maybe not....
What's great about the rice water is that you can make it yourself in about 15-20 minutes and freeze the rest. Then just microwave a portion and pour it on their food ...and it still works. I made skim milk with a batch and froze it in icetrays. Now whenever Angela or Teresa has an stomach Upset I make them a vanilla shake. They love it.
Abbi like seeing me prepare something for her ... just lkie the kids. :D
My sister said I should not use milk if they have an upset stomach, so I am trying some today with soy milk concentrate. The stools are not hard with this, just not loose. Great for constipation too! And if you add a banana, well even Abbi likes banana shakes!
It does not work for indigestion or acid reflucx much though. Still looking for a natural alternative there. So far the cure is prevention. No fatty foods after 5 PM.
Thanks Vero. But don't tell my mom that I had forgotten this cure. She claims she used it on us when we were young. I just didn't remember I guess.
