Needing suggestions in getting Julie from AR to PA

We have called several airlines and all depends on the temp whether they will fly her or not. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations in other ways of getting her there? We are relocating to PA and the relo company is transporting our vehicles there. The family was going to fly; however, we can't seem to figure our how Julie is going to get there since the temp has to be less than 85 thru the whole trip. Please help... we are leaving AR next week.

Try to find a direct flight and one that leaves either really late at night or one that leaves early in the morning to avoid the heat. The main problem is when they are on the ground...the hold in the plane is cool enough for them.
At 20 pounds, she might fit in an under-the-seat travel bag.. it might be snug for her, but hopefully your family will be together in the row and let her poke her nose out once in a while. Have you checked to see what the limit is for under the seat?

I second this. I have been looking into flying our future puppy to MT around Christmas, and the airlines prohibit flying the dogs when the temp is too cold, as well. If there is any way to get her under a seat I would try! Good luck!
HI Julie's family :D
I flew with Beebles @24 lbs from Dallas to Atlanta on Delta last August!
It was a tight squeeze 8O but it worked out fine!
I unzipped the carry-on bag & pulled it out from under the seat in front after take off.
Beebles popped her head out and rested her chin on the edge.
Most of the time she napped...Kaye gave her 1/2 of a mild RX (sedative)
Please check with her as to the exact name.
Beebles was in my lap for a bit but the Steward came by & told me
that was not allowed
She had to go back under the seat in front of me during landing too.
We got a little woof during take off & again during landing :phew:
Hope this info helps...
Diane
PS The carrier has to be soft-sided & approved by the airline...
I used something similar to this...

Thanks for all the suggestions! We were beginning to panic. I believe we will go to the pet store here and see if we can get her in a carry on... I'd rather have her with me by far! I am more worried about her flying cargo, priority parcel, etc... than her being with me. I will have to see what I can do with this!

Thank you for all your help and if anyone has any other suggestions let me know. I just thought she would be too big to fly as a carry on. sounds like she may be able to fit... just might be a tighter squeeze :D
If you plan of flying her with you I would call the airline and make sure which brand of carry on bags they allow. I had to buy the Sherpa bag for transporting Peanut. It was the one of the only brands that particular airline approved. I believe that Petco carries the Sherpa brand.
thanks, I will have to call the airline once I figure out which one we want to book it with. Our relo company is pretty flex in picking the airlines we want to fly. I will have to check with the different ones. Good suggestions... thanks :!: :D
As far as I know Continental is one of the easiest airlines to deal with when flying with dogs. Peanut flew 3 flights with them.
They even have all the fees listed in their website and what you will need to fly.
American Airlines is great too (they dont even question you)..
What I am find out is that when I talk to the reps from the airlines they say she has to be able to sit and turn around in the mesh holder. well, we all know she is too big for this. her approx dimensions are
12 in back legs, 23 inches in length, and 14 inches tall sitting (body not head) . Some airlines told me they would weigh her. before she weighed 20.6 by the time she flies next thursday she will be over that I'm sure. I am going to the pet store today to look at pet carriers to maybe see if she would fit in a carry on. I called American Airlines and they seemed very nice and the best in not having such strict rules. I am just afraid once we get her to the airport they won' t let her board because she is too big. THen we will be SOL. I have talked to Emmies Mom on the phone and she was very comforting and helpful. If anyone of ya'll can give me any other suggestions please let me know.

:D I posted a pic of her today. This will be able to tell ya how much she has grown since the other pics!
We flew Barney in the cargo hold when he was about 6 months old. We flew on AA. They were very nice. They said he had to have a crate he could turn around in, etc. The whole package (crate plus sheepie) had to be less than 70 pounds (I think). He weighed 50 exactly and the crate weighed 20 exactly. When they weighed him at the airport the total weight was something like 71 pounds and the guy didn't want to let him on. My mom begged (she was the deliverer--I was on the other side of the country!).
He finally agreed to let him on...so it was a close call, so be careful about weight restrictions...they could easily not let Julie on because of it...
8O There was no way Beebles could turn around in her Sherpa carrier...

No one batted an eye when we checked in & paid our $60 for her to the Delta agent!
We just made small talk with the check-in group!
Yes, I was very concerned!
If they said she was too big...
Just how would we get her from Texas to Georgia :lmt:
Beebles was 4 months @ 24lbs...a wee sheepie then
& still now at 1yr @ 56lbs.
As silly as it sounds...my advice would be just say a prayer :plead:
It may depend on who is working at the desk that day 8O
Good luck!
Diane
Yes, The power of prayer always seems to work. The man above can work mysterious things. We went to look at carriers and found out Petco, Pet Premium, PetsMart, etc... was all out of large carriers. So... we couldn't even try to sit her in one. I am working on some other plans to get her to PA. There is a pet spa and resort in Chenal. There I can get let her stay there and the man will check with the airlines each day to see if temp are right. He said he would even drive her to memphis tn airport if there is a direct flight there. however, the cost is quite hefty. I toured the resort today and seemed really neat. Each doggie room has a theme and either a chair, couch, bed, etc... in the room. each dog gets a room of their own. They even have tvs in each room. THe rooms look like mini kids rooms. The man that owns it seemed like he would do anything needed, but of course, there is a price that goes along with it. The bad thing is going to PA there is no direct flights. Therefore, I am going to look into memphis tn direct flights to pa. we are about 3 hours from memphis. I thought we could fly out of there if needed. Theres another plan in the working. I'm will find out more on this later. Thanks for all thehelp out there. I greatly appreciate everything the people on this forum has done for our family. thanks a bunch! :D
Just wondering -- instead of paying for boarding and all that, would it be possible to keep one of your vehicles and make the drive?

It looks like around 1000 or 11 miles, or about 18 hours of driving. Of course, depends on the part of AR you're leaving and the part of PA your going to.

I am fully certain you'd be able to find a nice hotel along the way to stay with Julie. So two 9 hours days of driving isn't wonderful, but should be tolerable.

What about small charter air companies? I have NO idea what they'd charge for a small 4 seater prop plane for a 1000 mile trip, but maybe the relo company would pay for it?

Jsut wondering and thinking aloud.
I made 1000 miles in one day when I was driving from NY to CA.
I kept it within 10 miles of the speed limit the entire way. Even slower in some areas :D
Sounds like a good idea, Ron. However, my husband has already made arrangements for us to fly. He already has relo to transport our vehicles. He is coming home next tuesday to help me with the kids. The movers are coming to pack and move our stuff Monday, Tuesday, and leaving out wednesday evening. We are suppose to fly out thursday morning. He is only allowed to be off tuesday thru thursday since he has a big audit coming for the three centers the following week he will be covering. It was a miracle he could get off a couple of days. I wouldn't of minded driving if things were different. Very good suggestion though. THanks for the help, I appreciate all suggestions!!! :D
Elissa, wowee!!! you drove a lot of miles in one day... Thats great! :D
Well first of all I was driving with my Dad and my son.
My Dad did not think it was a good idea to drive cross country by myself with Ryan. So to get away from Dad the more mileage I covered the sooner I could get rid of him
Also the love of my life was waiting for me in CA. I couldn't wait to get out here and start my life with him. We had been dating for 6 months before I moved. I already had plans of moving to CA before I met him.
Since Mom, Dad, Grandma, Sister, Cousin's, Aunts and Uncles all had moved to CA a few years before me and I was alone on the east coast.
Then I left my Ex-husband and was REALLY alone.

I did drive from NY to Virginia by myself to get away from the Ex when I first kicked him out.

You could always rent a car??? A friend of mine drove from Tennesse to NY with his Goldfish in the car. He made it in one day. 8) A the goldfish, Fred, lived for many years after. lol

Awww!!! :hearts:

Renting a car is a good idea - it would be way cheaper than some of your other options. I know that some of the companies allow one way rentals (dropping off in a different location).
Have you tried a pet transport service? I have no idea what they charge but it might not be much.
Be sure to know what kind of plane you are flying on.
Some of the smaller commuter planes don't let you carry on your carry on!
If it is on the large end of their limit, they will make you leave it at the door, put it underneath for the flight and then have it at the door when you get off the plane.
thanks to all who gave suggestions, etc... please go to the forum getting a puppy. Kaye has help arrange to have julie go to chippers house and fly out of atlanta to harrisburg. straight flight. TL is on a mission to rescue a oes. and came thru Little rock to get Julie. She then will meet with Alissa and get the rescue oes and exchange Julie to Alissa. its amazing how things can workout. Kaye is an angel in disguise.
That is awesome!! Julie will get to see her brother... That should be fun!
