Hubby got in an arguement about OES!

I guess he must really love his dog to be arguing over this topic.
Billy mentioned that he had an OES.
They somehow got on the subject of the New Shaggy Dog movie and hubby was quick to point out that the dog used in the new movie is a bearded collie not an OES! So the guy he was talking to was insisting that the dog in the first movie was also not and OES.
Billy eventually gave up because he knew he was right.
He said he didn't feel like arguing any longer with an idiot!
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
That's too cute!!! That smiley is for u to do to him, just to clear up any confusion

Well GOOD FOR YOUR HUBBY!!!!

And here is the proof........
http://www.geocities.com/alcus2/shaggy.html

The 1959 movie with Fred McMurray is DEFINATELY a sheepie!!!!!!!!

Scroll down on this link and you will see what is absolutely without a doubt 100% sheepie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/shaggy.html

 NO BEARDED COLLIE THERE
I remember that movie (older one) and 100% sheepie.....I think maybe that movie is why we became such OES fans actually.... :D And yes I was disappointed that there wasn't a sheepie in the new one.....will not be watching that movie.
oh my gosh.. that happens to us ALL THE TIME. We go to Petco, and everyone says, "it's that shaggy dog from that movie." Their parents then continue on to say they just went to the movies and saw it, etc, etc. Easily has been said to us 20+ times (when we go on walks, stores, etc).

If it's a kid, I don't correct them, but I have corrected some adults. They look so confused afterwards.
I wonder if all breed owners are as quick to correct people as us OES owners. lol
Billy said after he told the guy the new movie starred a Beardie the guy told him he was wrong there too. That is wasn't a Beardie in the new movie, but some other breed completely.
This guy must have been one of these "know it alls" that knows absolutely nothing. I really hate people like that. and unfortunately have met way too many of them. My Mom has a friend like that. He thinks he knows everything. He is the biggest idiot I know. She wanted to invite him to Hayley's B-day party so her and her husband didn't feel left out.
I told her his wife could come but he was NOT invited.
She did not like my answer, but my sister, Dad and one of Mom's others friends backed me up on it.
I have given up on trying to explain to "know it all people" what Dudley is... typical conversation in the park almost nightly.

Question: Is that a Saint Bernard?
Me: Nope...it's a Bernese Mountain Dog
Question: Are you sure!!!
Me: Your village is calling.....they are looking for you...

You would think that people who own BMD's would be better. The other night in the park...really.. honestly...

Lady who has 6 month old female Berner: OMG.. is that a Bernese???.. pointing to Dudley.
Me: Yup....(thinking.. are you for real lady.. you have one!!)
Lady: Is he full Bernese???
Me: Why would you ask me that question?
Lady: Because he is SO BIG.
Me: Where did you get your BMD....
Lady: From the petstore..
Me: Your village is calling you.

There are all kinds out there...
LMAO!!!
Of course it was a beardie, but did you know many of the "vocals" the dog/human made were actually a sheepdog?? Jane Dempsey of So. Calif OES rescue was a "consultant" to the movie. The movie wanted the smaller dog, but actually taped the "sounds" from a particularly vocal sheepdog. That must have been a hoot to watch.
actually it wasnt an OES (1959's Shaggy Dog) it was a South Russian Owtcharka.

My great grandfather worked at Disney and mentioned it was in fawn color.

I'm not happy about it but after googling it I guess I have to accept the fact that you may be right!!!! I never heard of that dog before!!!

That breed looks almost exactly like an OES...the coloring is the only difference I really see at all. Amazing.

Amanda
Ha! Isn't that interesting! I declare I learn something new here all the time. :D
I just reread the article at the link above about the DVD release of The Shaggy Dog. In that description they say the dog is a Bratislavian sheepdog. Is that the same as a South Russian Owtcharka?

Amanda
I think so.. I was looking at the cover of the shaggy dog - the dog itself is grey and white.. but in the movie (in color), I remember seeing the dog being light brown and white. Maybe i'm wrong, I have to watch it again..

covers london's ears... but didnt someone here mentioned that OES are too dumb to act?

I will be using that line now, it may take the idiots a while to figure it out but it's good.

They look just like a OES except for the coloring. Just not a s cute.

You' ve got to admit sometimes they are a few sanwiches short of a picinic, unless food is involved. They are just to cute for their own good.

OK who was "forgot to log in"?
I did see under amazon reviews (which can be written by anyone )of the DVD in color that the dog is listed as a Bratislavian sheepdog, which is different than a South Russian Owtcharka They are saying that the Bratislavian Sheepdog is a VERY rare breed which the Russian Owtcharka is not. The only info I have come up with for the Bratislavian Sheepdog are links to the reviews of the movie and one to famous dogs stating that the dog is a Bratislavian Sheepdog with no comfirmations on it.
I would love to get some kind of info from Disney on it but unforunately the questions part of their website is down. Or some proof if ya got it. There is absolutley no mention at all of the South Russian Owtcharka on any of the links or websites I have found regarding this movie.
WILL SOMEONE PLEEEEEEEEEESE TELL ME HOW TO INCLUDE MORE THAN ONE QUOTE IN A POST. thank you :(
Ginny to quote more than one person put the first quote in the regular way.
Then you basically copy the quote info how it looks in the first quote, but changing the name.
Hit the quote button into the reply window. Then you will see [quote]
After the word quote but before the brackets with no spaces you need to type"=screenname" It will look like [quote="Tasker's Mom"]
Then copy in the text of the quote. Then hit the quote button again and it will close the quote looking like this /quote but with little brackets [ ]around it
I hope these show up the way they are supposed to...
Sorry this is so confusing :(
I'm confused just reading it

I've read a few items that believe the russian owtcharka is one of the breeds used to form our beloved sheepies

8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
I give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry Ginny :(

Holly, I have read that too.

I contacted that woman from the South Russian Ovcharka website.
She had to say in regards to asking if the South Russian Ovcharka and Bratislavian Sheepdog were the same dog....
Quote:
I must admit that I have never heard of the Bratislavian Sheepdog.
I own South Russian Ovcharka, a Russian breed. I never heard that it was called Bratislavian Sheepdog. The other name of the SRO is Youzhnorusskaya Ovcharka.

Also her being a breeder of the South Russian Ovcharka I asked her if she knew which breed was in the movie Shaggy Dog and she did not know. You'd think with her being a breeder of that particular breed that anonymous claimed was in the movie she would know that info.

So I am going with the idea that the dog in the 1959 movie version was an OES, since there is absolutley no information whatsoever on the Bratislavian Sheepdog available at all anywhere on the internet... That is until someone can prove me wrong. :D
ah ha! Further proof that indeed it was an OES.
eBay has this item listed:

Shaggy Dog~Old English Sheepdog Disney Movie Photo Book

Vintage Disneyana 1967 Movie book. The Shaggy Dog, based on the screenplay. There are 15 black and white photographs from the film. Starring Fred MacMurray, Tommy Kirk, Tim Considine, Kevin Corcoran, Roberta Shore.. This book is also a great book for people who collect items with Old English Sheepdogs. Here is the link if anyone is interested:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Shaggy-Dog-Old-Engl ... dZViewItem

And this is from the website of OES rescue of Southern California :
http://www.oesrescue.com/htmls_oes/dogworld.html
Hollywood further put the spotlight on the Old English Sheepdog. The breed starred in the 1950s movie, "The Shaggy Dog," in which a boy is turned into an Old English Sheepdog, and its sequels, "The Shaggy D.A." and "The Return of the Shaggy Dog." The Bobtail next appeared in the movie "Please Don’t Eat the Daisies" and the ensuing TV series of the same name

Question...in the movies was the dogs tail bobbed?

If so...I read that the breed standard for the South Russian Ovcharka is to not alter the tail.

If the tail was bobbed in the movie......what are the chances that they would have gotten a South Russian Ovcharka without a tail?

Love from "baby Mia"
OH TOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not that we don't think the Beardie is cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just that we have to stick up for the OES in the Movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    TO YOUR BEEEEEUTIFUL BEARDIE!!!!!!!!
Tove,
I love Beardies and then new remake of Shaggy Dog has a Beardie instead of an OES.
We are just trying to prove that the dog in the original 1959 version is in fact an OES.

Amanda,
The only pictures I have seen there is no tail.
I also found this on IMDB movie database.
"I know, in real-life, it was an Old English Sheepdog. But, does anyone recall the fictional breed-name by which "Francesca" (Roberta Shore) referred to it, within the movie?"

They were referring to "Bratslavian Sheepdog" which is why nobody can find any info on it expect in regards to reviews of the movie. There is no such breed...
If you think Ginny is having problems with the double quotes.....you should see me trying to change my avatar...sigh....Jill walked me through it the other day...but I want another panda picture...me and the runaway kinda creeps me out....she said I could do it off of one on my camera, but I cant.....sigh...BIG sigh....who wants to walk lameo through it again??
Darc,
Just e-mail me the picture I will size it down for you.
Your avatar also gives me the creeps. 8O
I'll do it, just let me know when you're ready, Darcy. ;)

The South Russian Owtchark looks like a great dog for the person who wanted an all white OES. Very cute.
One of the first things said to me from the owner of the kennel I take the

boys too was that he trained under the guy who trained the OES for the

original disney movie The Shaggy Dog, he has several pics in his office

with this person(the name escapes me at the moment) so I figure if the

trainer called him an OES, thats good enough for me lol

I know...not very mature  But I don't like when people make me second guess myself.
I decided to place a bid on the Shaggy Dog Photo book.
Well I ended up winning. At least I will have proof in my posession.
Maybe I will leave the book in the car... Just incase I run into a know it all
