Free range poultry

I now know the correct answer to the age old question...

"why did the chicken cross the road?"

And the answer is... TO EAT THE BUGS ON THE OTHER SIDE!

I was driving home last night from work- my last 1/3 of the drive is through the rural area that surrounds my town. So here I am, driving along at about 50mph, and all of the sudden here are these little brown blobs hanging out at the side of the road.... Yep you guessed it CHICKENS! Two escapee chickens were over on the side of the road eating bugs!!! They must have escaped from the farm that was on the other side of the road. It was hilarious! I've seen hawks, eagles, deer, coyotes, turkeys, and fox not to mention the horses that live over there, but never chickens!!! Talk about free range!

LOL....that's funny, Karen!

When I first moved out into the country about 14 years ago, I had a hard time getting used to the "things" in the road, too. I can't tell you how many times I have had to stop and get a cow or bull or horse out of the road and back into the pasture before I could get by.

Or how often I've gotten up to find cows, goats, rabbits, etc in my yard and had to round them up before I left for work.

It's fun.
It's funny how things work the other way around too-- like when you move out of the country and into the city. Now the only animal that ever runs in the road is a crazed squirrel. In the country, you're on a constant lookout for animals. I can't remember the last time I had to use the bright lights on my car in the city.

When I lived at home, I hit a deer every year for 4 years from age 18 to 22. The only reason I remember when it started was because I hit the first deer on my 18th birthday. I killed 3 and one survived (I hope). One I hit with a rental car, which was a fun explanation to the clerk the next morning.
Ahh, the part I hate about country living. :)

I remember being stranded on the school bus for a quite a while waiting on animals to decide to move...

Then, we've hit a ton of deer in the past. Once we stopped in time, but the deer charged into us and wrecked the front grill.

I think the one that beats that though is there was a cow in the middle of the road. We stopped in time since Mom was driving her new Caddy, she was being careful (like 20 mph the entire trip, lol). Well, the cow ran into us hard enough to bust out the headlight and deploy both the front air bags. It nearly totaled her brand new car, lol She cried for weeks.

Oh and my dad had a friend who hit a deer. Well, the deer didn't die and came inside the car through the windshield. Unfortunately, they couldn't get out in time, and the deer went a little crazy and killed him and his wife. :(
:excited: Chickens.... About 2 nights ago a got home and there was a big black COW in our driveway. We live IN town!!! A rural town but town nonetheless, the cow hung out for a while then, a guy drove buy stopped and led it all the back to the pasture, which is about..... IDK maybe a mile away, i never been good at spatial distancing

Chickens on the road aren't as common as they once were. When Mr. Luchetti was still alive we also had to watch for guinea hens and peacocks. Once in awhile a horse will bust loose and will clop, clop down the road with all the dogs parking it along..............But a COW! that's new.
Karen, I loved the title of your post!

When I moved Upstate NY I was shocked to see wild turkeys.
I had never seen them anywhere in NJ, but the Turkey Farm and the Zoo.
Silly me had no idea they were in the wild.
I remember one day getting stuck with a flock of about 50 of them on a rural road in front of me. I honked my horn and all they did was gobble back. I finally put the car into drive and they moved out of the way slowly. I also yelled out the window that if they didn't move they would become my Thanksgiving feast. lol
There are a lot of dead deer in NY. I have never hit one, but one day I came off an exit ramp and the people in front of me hit one. I pulled over to see if they were ok. They were more concerned about the dead deer than there totalled car.
This was my first experience with livestock in the roadway! And luckily for the chickens they weren't IN the roadway, they were NEXT to it, or the local hawks and crows would have been having poultry for dinner!!! My favorite local nursery has chickens and guinea fowl so I always drive SLOWLY in the driveway... I don't want to hit anything!
Oh man! This reminds me of the time when I was going about 50 down a country road and all of a sudden in my rear view mirror I saw something coming up behind me!

I could tell he wanted to pass so I gave him a wave out the window, and was SHOCKED as it passed to see it was a chicken! Not only that, but it was a three-legged chicken! It looked at me briefly and then passed me by. I tried to keep up for a while, but at 60 mph I thought it was getting too dangerous.

Just before I lost sight of it, I could see it turn into a farm down the road. So when I got to the farm I pulled in and the farmer was by his barn.

"Did you see a three legged chicken run in here?" I asked.

"Yup," said the farmer. "He's mine."
I asked: "Why a three legged chicken?"

"Well," he answered. "At dinner, I wanted a chicken leg, my wife wanted a chicken leg, and one of my daughters wanted a chicken leg. That's three. So I figured if I had a three legged chicken, everyone would be happy. I worked at it for a few years, and finally I was able to breed lots of three legged chickens"

"Wow, that's great!" I said. "How do they taste?"

"Don't know. Haven't caught one yet."
 Where do you come up with this stuff????

3 legged chickens
How sad and overworked am I? When I read that, I thought the poor chicken was missing a leg.

I need a vacation!!
:twitch: :D
