OES at Beaver County Humane Society, PA

I had to rescue an OES. Because of no space at my place and no responses to Rescues that I had contacted, I had no choice but to take the OES to the BCHS. I am working with them to find him a home. He is a 2 y-o-m, neutered. He is very sweet & very good with people & other animals (while cats I know he gets along with). Unfortunately he does have demadetic (spelling?)mange. Having researched this condition, I feel that not all options have been tried. I think that a more holistic approach may help him.
I have a history with OES: had 3 myself, 2 of which were rescued. This is just breaking my heart to not be able to keep him & help him. I want to get a local OES group to help, but am having trouble getting in touch with anyone.
If anyone can foster him, or help place him please please PLEASE let me know.

Where are you? Thanks for helping!
Have you contacted Grannie Annie with New England OES Rescue?

I did a lot of reading on Demodex mange recently (I've got two sheepies with bald spots... waiting for skin biopsies to come back but no parasites were found in the skin scrapings). It said this form is not contageous but is usually the effect of a challenged immune system.

http://www.akitarescue.com/treating%20demodectic.htm

I had also read that low thyroid can trigger this type of mange. Low thyroid is quite common in dogs.

"...Demodectic mange in dogs over 2 years of age is classified as adult-onset, and usually occurs secondary to an underlying cause. Successful treatment of adult-onset mange relies upon identifying and correcting the underlying cause. Dogs with immune suppression due to illnesses like hypothyroid disease, and Cushing's disease, are also candidates for demodectic mange..."

I don't have a way to post privately because there is no "private message" link for you so... if the shelter is willing to keep this sheepie until he finds his home or can get into rescue, I'm willing to pay for a thyroid test and a couple of months of Soloxine if he does have hypothyroidism. Please let me know.
That sounded really stupid... sorry, I've been known for that. I should have asked this-

HAS he been tested for anything that might indicate a serious illness? Has he been heartworm tested or had any blood work done that might help pinpoint the reason for a suppressed immune system?
I believe the rescue contact in that area is Chris Gaburri. I know she had been showing quite a lot so she may be busy. Her contact info is rosebery@comcast.net 412-761-0493

Madeline Erickson is listed for Ohio and may be able to help also, Waynenik@aol.com 585-293-2967.

Let us know what else we can do. Unfortunately I can't bring any dogs with skin conditions into my house since my old dog seems to have problems if you even mention anything skin related. Hopefully Chris comes through for you!
I just spoke with the shelter and they haven't had time to really look at this sheepie-boy or his paperwork because he came in at closing time yesterday.

If one of the rescues can step in and help him it would probably be a very good thing. They asked if I could foster but I told them I was from Michigan and he's in Pennsylvania.

In the meantime, they are going to check him and his paperwork out then decide what to do. They'll give me a call if there is any testing that can be done. I'm just hoping bood work might pinpoint the problem and get him well again? I don't know much about Demodex mange... only what I've read online so maybe I'm not going in the right direction here.
I am working with this shelter to contact resue agencies. I will be calling Chris & Madeline this evening. Keep your fingers crossed. Since I volunteer at this shelter, I took the dog there as a temporary measure. So I'm hoping that one of the rescues will come through.
Good luck! The best place for him would be an OES rescue.
I did speak with Madeline & Chris last PM. Was able to get a name of someone who might be interested and we spoke at length last night. The family will talk it over & get back to me with a decision. So far this is my only lead. I'm trying to be optimistic.
I got an email from Madeline last night saying this sheepie boy has a home. VERY good news :D

"This dog has a home. I got the call from the lady that surrendered him this evening. Another lady on my list from York, PA will drive and get him tomorrow..."

Grannie Annie also tried to reach the shelter yesterday and was going to try again today. I'll let her and Chris know that this sheepie-boy is being rescued today.

A big thanks to Madeline for coming to his rescue! :clappurple:
Woohoo!!! :clappurple: :high5: :go: :yay:
That's great! I am so happy to hear the good news.
That's wonderful news!
YAY!!! Another sheepie saved...thanks to all involved :)
Its official. The OES has a new home. I drove him to met his new adoptive family. I'm very hopeful that all will work out. Thanks to everyone for their support!
