Diahrea for 10 days-Could it be the food?

Chipper started with VERY LOOSE diahrea on May 19- took him to the vet immediately, they did a fecal and everything was clear- nothign apparent. Due to the foul smell (sorry to share, TMI!!) of the feces, and how loose it was, and the past with a liter mate having Cocidia, they put him on a 10-day treatment of Albon as a precaution. Tried the pumpkin, no help. He has been on brown rice, chicken and Wellness (dry food only) since the 19th. He seemed to improve a bit, we had some more formed stools, his last dose of Alban was this past Sunday morning. We are back to loose stools, some comes out a bit firmer, and then the final is soft. He had one more feces screen on May 24th (negative as well- I took him for a re-check on the 24th b/c he just wasn't happy). He is eating, drinking, playful, but the diahrea concerns me. Wondering if maybe it is the Wellness? Any thoughts/suggestions/advice.

THANKS

Personally, I'd gradually switch him over to a brand of food that might agree with him better. We had a problem with Wellness and Solid Gold foods being too rich for our girls... it wasn't diarrhea- just way too soft. Nutro firmed it up great but we later went to a larger company/national brand after that scare with Diamond. When we switch to a different food we transition them over a period of about 10 days... 1/4 new food to 3/4 old food; then 1/2 new food to 1/2 old food; then 3/4 new food and 1/4 old food; finally all new food.

Here's our approach to occasional diarrhea...
We usually skip one meal when diarrhea first appears. Then boil together in same pot: Uncooked rice to equal 3 cups cooked rice and 1 cup raw turkey, beef, etc. Add water as instructions on rice call for. Boil until rice is tender. If water evaporates too soon, add additional water. Cool and feed until stool firms up... usually in a day or two. If it doesn't clear up by then or it looks more serious it's off to the vet.

Kaopectate: Cherry Flavor Mine love the stuff!
Use syringe to administer the appropriate dose. Put in side of mouth flap between cheek and teeth. Squeeze slowly as they swallow.

We had a battle with recurrent diarrhea and our pack. I don't think it's what you're dealing with but anyone with a pack might want to tuck this info away for future reference. We went through it off and on for over a year...

About 2 years ago, my pack (4 at the time- two adults and two puppies) had a problem of diarrhea and vomiting. It would start with one dog... we'd treat her with Metronidazole and anti-diarrhea meds and she'd get better. The next dog would become ill and we would go through the process again. We called it the Spring-crud and it would go through the pack more than once! We treated them individually and we treated them as a pack with everyone being treated at the same time. The vet checked the "samples" brought in each time and indicated simply that there were high bacteria levels. All of the girls were on heartworm/worm meds year-round.

We switched vets last year, added another dog to the pack and again the cycle began. This vet too treated them with a round of antibiotics and anti-diarrhea meds. When the sickness came back again, we expressed our extreme frustration and the fact that this just was not normal. He spoke with an internist and had us treat the entire pack with Panacur (the white liquid)... I think it was for 3 consecutive days. He explained he had gone to a seminar recently and they recommended this approach. We missed the Spring-crud this year and have not had this cyclical illness since.

Probably WAY too much info but you can weed through it and take what might help. Please keep us posted on how he's doing. He is sooooo cute! :D
THANK YOU!! We have the Kaopectate Cherry and will try that- and will look into transitioning the food and hoping that will kelp!! Again, MANY THANKS
Wellness didn't agree with my dogs either, I think it's just too rich for oes tummies.
Did the vet check for giardia? That's what it sounds like to me due to the smell you mentioned. That would require a totally different treatment than for coccidia.
Chipper has had four stool samples over a 2-week period of time, all four have shown nothing- no parasites, no worms, nothing!!! It is funny, he had a very loose stool this morning, but we just qent outside for a bit and had a solid stool. I think he is messing with my head!!! LOL!
Heat messes with some of my dog's .......rears. I always cut back on the food during the heat and feed when the dogs will be cool for many hours. Also, make sure the dog food is stored where it's cool. In the heat it goes rancid quickly.
Hope he's feeling better soon!
Thanks for all of the advice and support!
I tried to switch the dogs to Kirklands Super Premium Lamb & Rice formula. I was very impressed with the ingredients. The problem was Pepsi's rear was not very impressed. The food had veggies in it... Potatoes, Peas and carrots? Anyhow Pepsi had the worst gas I had ever smelled and runny poops, not diarhhea but loose. So back to Authority Lamb and Rice for both the dogs. Rags did very well on the Kirkland but it was way too rich for Peps. Authority does not have the veggies and Pepsi does very well on it.
I gave them a full month on it and the problem has not getting any better.
I even weaning them off the old food very slowly. Next week I will be picking up a bag and switching them back to the Authority. I know they both do very well on it.... But I was looking for a cheaper alternative.
Cheaper....but a very good food...don't get me wrong... Just didn't work for my dogs. It actually would have been great if it worked out because it was almost $10 cheaper for a 40 lb bag. Oh well.

Anyhow... I hope Chipper is feeling better soon.
I thought the same as Stacey, it may be giardia. For some reason there are vets who have a hard time diagnosing it. Giardia smells horrendous but is easy to cure.
I had the same problem with Barney and switched to Purina's Pro Plan. Stools firmed up nice and no gas. I even use it for treats when training.
Ambrose was the littermate with coxidia and his diarrhea did not clear up until we gave him Panacor.
OVERNIGHT it cleared up.
He has firm poops and is fine now on Wellness :D
For cats .... get some raw rabbit human grade cat/dog food. Once the poop is back to normal slowly introduce the standard food.
