Invisible Fencing

Hi,
I'm about to take the plunge and purchase an invisible fence from the Invisible Fence Company. I feel confident that since these guys have been around so long and are endorsed by the SPCA, Consumer Reports and a few other big hitters that this would be the best company to work with.

I have read the posts about the Fence or No fence but if anyone else has any comments about this particular company that would be great.

Thanks!
Deb

A warning about invisible fences: my friend's father was out for a walk around his neighborhood and was attacked by a pit bull that was contained by an invisible fence. There were several dogs contained by this fence and one dog had chewed off the collar of the attacker. Since that dog no longer had a collar nothing prevented him from crossing the fence line. Fortunately, my friend's father did not panic and beat the dog off him. He was okay if you consider multiple stitches in his arm and leg to be okay. The pit bull went on to attack the mail carrier that day and my friend's father's car when her mother and father drove by to see the dogs--on their way to the hospital.
Friends of ours have the Invisible Fence and it has worked great! They have had only a few incidences where the dog has left the yard (at the beginning) and one had to do with someone accidentally cutting the "wires" in the ground so the fence didn't work. I think you also have to be careful in power outages.

I would love to get one too - but we live on a main road and it would make me too nervous (plus, Sydney is deaf so I don't know how easily she could be trained - it involves them hearing a "beep" before they get to the edge).

The only word of caution is that although it keeps your dog from leaving - it doesn't prevent visitors from coming in (wildlife, other dogs, etc.).
What a horrible pit bull story. I understand the fear people have about dogs getting into our yard. Our neighborhood is pretty family-oriented so there are not to many guard dog-types of dogs around. I also will never leave my OES unsupervised as we do have a sidewalk community and I need to make sure that he doesn't bound off to greet someone. I had our last OES trained to stay within his yard limits, but even with that, he was never left unattended. This pup I can tell gets too easily distracted when he sees people & animals across the street so I am bagging the thought of trying to train him his yard limits on his own.
Invisible fence is a great product, if the dog is taught to obey his/her boundaries.

I used it at two different homes for two different types of dogs. A wheaton terrier who loved to run around pretty much obeyed the "buzz" the collar made when she got too close. Our problem with this fence was we had the fence loop through the front of the house so she could not charge the front door and could never get a great balance of power for the inside of the house (not too powerful so she would get zapped inside but too low so she would pass through on the outside).

The second home had it as well, but looped around the entire house. Cocker Spaniel had no problems and obeyed his boundaries. To the point where if he didn't have his special collar on he still would not approach the edge of the fence.

If an above the ground fence is not an option, the Invisible Fence product is a great alternative.
Forgot to mention that several of our neighbors (living on the same main road) have the Invisible Fence and they have had no problems that I'm aware of. Even when I walk by their houses - the dogs stay in their yards!

Our friend will soon be training her dog to stay in a yard (of their summer house) by using the "flags" to fool him into thinking that there is an invisible fence. Although they won't allow him to be left unsupervised in the "fake invisible fence".
We used this company and are pleased so far. I have to admit that I still watch my 2 OES while they are out taking care of business. They are like children to me and are so rare in our area that I shudder to think of someone driving off with them. Soooo ... we have it but rarely "use" it. Patch & Griffon's mom (o;
Did you get the Invisible Fence? How's it going?
Sorry Ron, I forgot about starting this post on the Invisible Fence. Please see my other post called "Invisible Fence". Maybe you could combine them? Duh on me.
We are considering the purchase of an invisable fence. Has anyone considered the Petsafe or Innotec systems.

I seems like Invisable Fence has the market. I would like to know about the other before making a purchase.
