New Category

I'm seeing more and more deaf OES. Can we add a permanent category for deaf OES so people can get the information they need right here on this forum please.

I'm fostering my third one this year -- and this one is not only deaf she is blind too... she is a very sweet little girl...

Interesting idea!

What kind of info, Marie? About breeding issues, or care issues, or training issues. or health issues?

I guess I'm wondering what info would be in the category, and what info is specificially needed for deaf (or blind) sheepdogs (or deaf/blind dogs of any breed, I suppose).

Thanks!
One thing to consider might be to inform people how to test dogs for deafness. It may be obvious in some cases, but in others you think the dog may be deaf, then you see it respond to noise. Then it acts deaf again.

Deaf dogs respond to what we "think" of as noise, but to them it's "vibrations". Can be very confusing in the beginning until you've actually dealt with a deaf dog. You may think there's a problem, then not, only to find out it was the vibration, not the sound they responded to.

Training owners to teach hand signals. I always tried to teach mine hand signals along with voice commands when they were pups so if there was any hearing problems later in life they'd already know them.

Not to startle them when sleeping, etc....NEVER take any chance with a deaf dog getting out of the yard. If they get lost, you can go out looking and yelling for them, they can't hear you, and they can't hear traffic. With blind dogs: don't move things around. They learn their way around just as people do, things need to be in constant order for their safety.

Ear infections that can lead to deafness, as well as other causes. Having had a deaf OES of my own I think this is a wonderful idea. Moral support for one another can be a blessing.
Definitely the training issues associated with deaf sheepies. I believe it was Kristen? (BritPresSyd) that always had links and training info for that. Compiling that info into one area might be quite helpful. Even just editing a thread that was like the ask so and so section of magazines. So it would be in one spot.
I'd suggest even a "Living with Deaf Dogs" sticky but it seems like there are so many stickies at the top of the medical area. You already have to scroll quite a bit dwon the page to hit the new topics. Can some of the poison/harmful food related ones be combined too for easier searching?

Great idea, Marie!

We came very close to adopting a deaf boy. (Luckily he fell into the 'lap of luxury' in Michigan). I was very concerned about communicating effectively with a deaf dog, what kind of hand signals to use, etc. If there was more information available here on the forum, people may not be so apprehensive about adopting such special needs animals.

How about a Section for Special Needs Sheepies that would encompass both blind and deaf sheepies and their specific needs?
That sounds like a good idea!
Awwww! I like that idea too. To simplify the main index, I'd consolidate all of the training discussions since they don't really get alot of posts. And I'd move pictures and Intros closer to the top.

I think that's a great idea! If people had more information on how to deal with special sheepies it might be easier to place the rescues. Since I know nothing on the subject I would find it most interesting.
I'm listening... keep the ideas flowing!
One thing I learned on the Deaf Dogs group that your dog is first a puppy (or a senior etc.) then it is an Old English sheepdog (or other breed) puppy then finally it is a deaf old English Sheepdog Puppy....

Therefore, it would make sense to me that people looking for information of deaf Old English Sheepdogs would do better to get their information from an OES site before they looked at a deaf dog site....

For example, a short haired dog owner ( like a boxer or a dalmation owner -- two breeds that often are deaf) would probably never think to tell you to make sure there is no hair in your dogs eyes as it is crucial that your deaf OES can see you when you "call" them...

I like the idea of incuding deafness with other special needs like blindness or dogs that need wheel chairs in a new special needs OES category -- it would raise visibility for these dogs and hopefully help people to understand their potential.

Another category I would like to see is the Senior OES.... you have a special area for puppies.. why not one for topics often assiciated with senior dogs needs as well.

Another good idea Marie! Luke will be 9 next month and my other 2 will turn 8 this year. I would welcome any and all advice about seniors, in any area.
