Pointing and Hunting Behavior

My "sheppie" has started to "point" and wants to chase after squirrels, birds, rabbits etc.. I once had an Irish Setter that reacted in the same way..is this normal for a herding dog to have such a strong prey drive?
He is a true OES from what my Vet and I can surmise, and we are both suprised by the drive to hunt! OES are a sight dog, I have learned, and maybe this is not abnormal.?!

Interesting topic!

The pointing sounds interesting to me, but the chasing of squirrels and so forth is as you suggest, part of the prey drive and I think that's part of the herding thing, or vice versa.

I'm sure someone more knowledgable about this stuff will chime in!
Did your dog learn from another one? We have a bird dog and a sheepie. A lot of the bird dog's natural instincts have rubbed off on Scruffy to where she is more interested it chasing birds than she was before we got the other one. That happened with my parents Jack Russel. Their pointer taught him how to be an excellent bird hunter, where he wouldn't normally have any inclination to.

Someone needs to tell Clyde that then because he walks into stuff all the time.

What do you mean by sight dog? Dogs definitely influence each other, like someone else said, but OES are herders through and through.

Seriously, Jill, I think Clyde and Barney have the same parents...
MO continues to be a pointer........she takes great delight in sniffing and tracking ??? (whatever her peanut brain figures is important), sneaking up to it, going into a pointing posture hoping it will jump up and run so she can chase. It was great fun when the rabbits lived under the gazebo or the cats in the compost pile, now is is content to chasing bird shadows again. Whe we flood irrigate the orchard or garden her nose goes into the water, sniffing. She comes up, snorts the water back out and starts again. Looking for fish or frogs? Such a silly dog.........

susan
Rags does the same thing....any animal that she doesn't think should be in our yard she goes after. She will first stop and get this intense look then pounces. She hates George, our hummingbird, and would catch him if she got the chance.
Duke doesn't point or pounce. He lunges. I think being in a house with two cats has given him a complex. The cats are terrified of him because he's so big though so maybe it's a good thing he doesn't all out chase them. He just likes to prove that he could if he wanted to.

Needless to say I have no idea why dogs do half of what they do. I just enjoy watching them. :)
