| My pup is 7 months old and will be neutered soon, my uncle (his vet) just has to find the time to do it. But lately (since he hit 6 months) he has a new behavior at the dog park. He seems to fall in love! Usually he picks a rather sedate, aloof older female dog (always a female) and after alot of butt sniffing he whines and whines, when he gets no attention he starts the barking and following and trying to mount. the female normally ignores all of this. Its so hard to get my pups attention as he seems to have ONE focus only at that time, usually hes very obedient. I know mounting is usually a dominance thing but honestly this looks to me like hormone overdrive. Normal?? How to stop? Should I ignore (so hard to listen to the barking and I dont want to get him in the habit of barking as hes not normally barky), or pick him up and remove him completly. Will it stop once hes been fixed? |

| Sounds normal, if there are females in heat around, and as long as you don't wait too long to get him fixed hopefully it won't become a habit. |
All of my dogs before they were neutered humped like crazy.
My Toy Poodle was humping my German Shepherd and the air for over 3 hours one night right after we got the German Shepherd. Both were unneutered at the time. We couldn't get him to stop. He seemed CRAZY. After that night I immediately called the Vet but couldn't get an appt for 2 weeks. It was the longest 2 weeks ever. I wanted to strangle him. Both were neutered at the same time. The humping after the surgery was strictly a dominance thing. After he was neutered the behavior disappeared. He still humped here and there but it wasn't obsessive anymore. Thank Goodness! |
I agree... ask your uncle to work him in ASAP. With a young unaltered male of this age it's love not dominance that's causing the behavior. It's best your sheepie-boy is never given any fond memories he may want to relive. I'd keep him out of the dog park until he's been neutered. |
