Tattoos and Microchips - For The Dogs!

Do most breeders tattoo or microchip their dogs? We rescued both Lucky & Sam and we know they are purebreed but don't have their papers nor any idea who their breeders were. Neither had microchips when we got them - well they do now.

If breeders tattoo their dogs where would I look on a sheepie to find it?

Anyone know?

I have no idea. I've always been curious about this. When I adopted Duke the adoption counselor told us he was microchipped though, and that if we ever moved we'd have to contact them so they could update the information. I don't actually know anything about the tattoos.
Panda is chipped...i think that there is another thread about this somewhere...
My cat has a tatoo inside his left ear given to him by the shelter he came from. It looks like some type of American Indian symbol.

Rebecca who we got at age 5 has a tatoo inside her thigh with a serial # who I'm assuming got tatooed while she was a pup. She had a benign tumor taken out of her neck when she was a pup so I'm hoping the tatoo was done under anesthesia at least...
Any "registered" dog needs to be either tattoed or micro-chipped. That nubmer or identifier is on thier papers. That's how they can be identified as being who they are supposed to.

A micro-chip is a tiny chip that is inserted under the skin, usually in the shoulder area. A vet or shelter can scan the animal (like the scanners in a grocery store) and see the number come up. Different micro-chip companies have a different number series so they can be tracked.

I am the holder of the scanner and the chips for the rescue I volunteer for. We can chip them ourselves, but none of us have any experience with needles, so we get our vet to insert them for us. Then we mail the paperwork into the company and give a copy to the adoptive family with the chip number.

Tattoes are older style, but many breeders still use them. Each breeder is assigned a series that they use, and the rest of the numbers are the unique identifiers for each dog. The dogs are usually tattoed on the inside flank or belly area. Some are tattoed inside the ear. When we take dogs into our rescue we check for a chip and tatoo. If tattoed we can call the registration office and find out who the owner is and the breeder of the dog.

Mill dogs are often tatooed inside the ear so that when they are disposed of the ear can be cut off and the dog can not be identified.
Most breeders that I know of tattoo inside the ear. All 3 of my dogs are tattooed inside the ear. My first oes was tattoed on the inner thigh, but we never did find out where she came from (she was a rescue)
Could be breed preference, then. A breed that need sits ears other than down may not tatoo inside as it could build up cartilage and affect the ear set in a show dog. It also would show up in pictures etc.

Out of the 30 some-odd tatooed dogs I've taken into rescue none of them had tatooes in the ears...all in the flank and/or belly, and we were able to track down 90% of their breeders. Rubbing a bit of rubbing alcohol on it brings out the die.

Dixie has her tatoo in the belly and is quite legible.
We got an option, so we had them to microchip Jasper. Joy got a tattoo at the shelter when she got spayed. The vet commented on it yesterday. It's on her belly. We'll probably still her her microchipped though.

This is not true in the US. A registered dog through the AKC is not required to have a chip or tattoo. It is the owners choice to do either.

My boy is registered and has a chip. But it was my choice to get it done through my vet (my breeder recommended it). His chip # has nothing to do with his AKC registration number. He was actually registered (and shown) with through the AKC months before he received the chip.

That being said, best $40 I spent (at least for piece of mind).
Here in Canada they MUST be microchipped or tatooed.
Bunker is both, She is Tattooed on the belly and microchiped.
Chipper is going next week for the micro-chip... had never heard of the tatoo part before- is it painful to them? I am all for as much precautionary steps to take to protect, God forbid he ever got lost, but I do not want him to incur pain... I have heard the micro-chipping is quick and easy-- any input???

Microchip is just like a shot, between the shoulder blades. We were in and out of the vet in about 5 minutes, with no crying (dog or owner).
i found a dachshund with a #36 tattood in the ear flap...how can i find the owner or breeder who cast this animal away
My son had all his 4H rabbits tattooed. Never did like watching that whole process.

Zoey was chipped through the shelter we got her from. Our breeder got Caitlyn chipped when she was like 5-6 weeks old through a program that the club she belongs to was sponsoring. We were able to get her chipped for an additional $25 when we picked her up. We would have done it anyway but this way it was done and we didn't have to even think about it.

We'll do it with any animal that spends any amount of time outside, on a lease or off. Only one of our eight cats is chipped and he's the one that roams the neighborhood at night.

I don't think a simple 36 (is that all there is, or all that is legible) will clue you in to the dog's origins. Can you have the dog scanned for a microchip? I think most vets and, one can but hope, most shelters would have a universal scanner of some sort. That would be much more helpful most likely in tracking down the owner, who could be frantically searching for the dog.

I had never heard of tattooing. we always micro chip. even indoor cats

with all the OES issues... people wanting them.... I wonder if they could get GPS trackers?

just a passing thought
