How can you tell if a dog has kennel cough?

How can you tell if a dog has it? Joy doesn't cough all the time, but she does cough 8-10 times a day probably. It sounds like it's gagging her when she does do it, and it lasts for several seconds. She has a checkup tomorrow anyway, just to make sure she's healthy and get her started on heartworm and flea medications. She was just spayed a few weeks ago, and she's up to date on her shots. I would think bordetella (sp?) would be included since she was in the shelter with other dogs. Do you think she could have kennel cough though? If so, how is that treated and can Jasper get it? Jasper got all of his shots in January. I feel sorry for her though...all that coughing doesn't look fun. :(

It sounds like she could have it-- Clyde sounded just like that when we got him too. Bordatella is one of the more ineffective vaccines so she could very well get it even if she did have the vaccination. Definitely have the vet check her out when you go. In the meantime, when she coughs, pat her sides and try to help her cough up her congestion when she does have a coughing fit (our vet recommended it with Clyde's kennel cough and it helped him). Your vet'll give you something for her and she'll be good as new in a week or so!
Thanks. I'm kinda afraid it will be that, but at least it sounds like it has an easy fix. I just hope Jasper doesn't get it. He hasn't been sick yet...don't want to experience it anytime soon either. :)
Gail,
We brought a dog home from the shelter years ago. As soon as she walked in the door she started coughing. Roxie, my Boxer did not like her one bit and they were visciously fighting with each other so the dog went back to the kennel the day after we got her. By that time Roxie had caught it too.
It is very contagious. Even if Jasper had the vaccine he still might get it since the vaccine is not very effective.
I hope that Joy feels better soon.... Also that Jasper doesn't get it.
Who's Joy? Did I miss something?

My Mother's day present :) She's a little rat terrier looking dog that we adopted last weekend. Here's some pics of her:

She's sooo small compared to Jasper anyway :)

Sounds like kennel cough, especially since she came from a kennel. It is common as the cold virus and very easy to pass. Frank just had it recently because he picked it up at a dog show.

Don't worry about Jasper too much just yet. Some dogs pick it very easily while others won't get it at all.
Oh, & good luck with Joy she's very cute!

sorry, it is me VerveUp (I've been burning the candle again for work so I'm sleepy, sorry)
Gail,

When we first got Sam less than a month ago he had developed kennel cough. What you are describing sure sounds exactly what he had. Our vet listened to his chest and prescribed a cough medicine and clavamox. Not even 3 days after starting Sam on the medicine - Lucky started coughing and he gets the bordatella (kennel cough) vacine every 6 mths. So we started Lucky on the medicine as well.

When you take your dog to the vet you need to call ahead of time and let them know you think he may have it. They will want to keep him separate from the other dogs while the vet takes a look at him.

Our vet told us that kennel cough can be gotten at the vet's office from playing with other dogs at the dog park etc...

I know it sounds awful but it takes about 7 days on the medicine and then all better.

Good luck.
Congrats on Joy!

I thought Dancer had kennel cough a couple of days ago, but after giving her some ice cubes her hacking has stopped so she might have just gotten a piece of kibble stuck in her throat.
Another thing that can make a dog hack and gag is roundworms. When the encysted eggs become larvae they migrate up the windpipe so that it tickles the dogs throat, they cough and gag and swallow and the worms complete their lifecycle maturing and reproducing in the digestive tract.
