Playing fetch or other exercise

I know how important exercise is to this breed - - - and I know how much fun fetch can be - but how do you teach an OES to play fetch?? When I throw a toy for dexter it all depends on his mood as to whether or not he'll go after the toy - and don't even mention whether or not he chooses to bring it back to me........... sooooooo what else do you do for "exercise"???

thanks.........

Panda isnt good at returning the toy, but what we play is this...handful of toys...toss one ..she races grabs it and comes back but wont drop it...throw toy number 2 she chases it and still has toy 1 in her mouth etc
hee hee hee.
Barney is the same way. We usually end up quitting after about 3 'fetches' because I am the one going after the ball. I keep explaining to Barney that I am not the one who goes after the ball, but he doesn't care.

Barney gets a lot of exercise by chasing the cats...Back and forth through the house...

Besides that, just regular old walking works for us!
I was wondering the same thing. I throw a frisbee and Duke looks at me like he's wondering if I'm going to pick up what I just threw. So I tried a ball and nothing. Not even rolling it.

He plays tag right good, because he knows he'll win. We usually start in the house and the last time we played we both wiped out on the tile which was pretty silly. By the time we reached the backyard we did a few laps.

I can't get him to play with any toys though. If you find something that works, I'd love to know all about it. Good luck! :)
ok good - now I don't feel soooooo bad........... I just thot Dexter was being a snob........
altho he really does seem to enjoy this old huge rope tug toy we got for the St. Bernards years ago..... he will chase after that a few times before he gives me "YOU GO GET IT" look!!!!
Clyde will only fetch in the house-- not outside. In the house he can even catch toys in the air from across the house. Outside, he gets hit in the face. Go figure.
Have a treat for when they come back with the ball, Laika runs right back and drops it and sits for her treat. That started about two weeks ago, she will be four at the end of the month! time flys!!

Same exact thing over here with Annie. She'll go after it only about twice and then looks at us to go get it. She prefers if we make an idiot out of ourselves so she'llo chase US or she'll run alongside the fence while barking at our poor neighbors in their yard. This week, Foz seems only interested in running after his ball once. He picks it up and lays down to kiss it. Silly pups!
going through the wickets....throw toy, races pell mell back to me and runs through my legs...over and over and over and over again 8O
When teaching Pepsi to play ball I used a lot of praise.
He did seem to get annoyed that everytime he came back I took the ball and threw it again. He gave me a look like "Well, why the heck would she threw it again after I just brought it back.
Rags already knew how to play. Pepsi watched her a bit and figured out that the point of it was fetching and running. Then he started to enjoy it.

So then we taught them how to catch a frisbee.
Both the dogs will leap in the air to catch a frisbee. We had to get a soft one for Pepsi. He was scared of the hard frisbee and would just stand there...usually getting hit in the head. DUH!! Rags will play with any frisbee.
I have to say that Walter picked up the idea of fetch pretty quick. He was hesitant at first - would chase the ball and then run rght back. What I did was wait until he got it in his mouth, and then run the other direction. I think he forgot he had the ball and wanted to chase me so badly that he would inadvertantly bring the bal back. Eventually he caught on.

Sometimes I would throw and then have to take a few steps as if to pretend like we were having a contest to see who could get to the ball first.

On returning, he does what I have affectionately coined "the bulldozer." He runs right into me and then falls over!

Still no luck with the frisbee either. Oh wel, small steps. Good Luck!
Max and miller love to play fetch....they cant seem to get enough of it - EVER. When I first got Max he learned in the house, but now we play in the back yard for hours. They will keep bringing me the ball until I throw it. Max has even learned to catch a frisbee :P . At night they will keep bringing me toys until I eventually throw something for them to catch. I wish I had advice for you, but keep trying!
