My 11 month old sheepie has the mange?

we sent him in to be looked at only becuse he kept on loosing clumps of hair and then followed the bitting. Bam is my4 th OES and i have never came across this . any way the vet said they would test him while he was being neutered and while he was a sleep he is a very aggressive pup , test came back positive for mites but said it was not harmfull for us but not much could be done with him . any suggestions <<

I don't have any experience with this but I have alot of sympathy. I hope your sweetie feels better soon.
I would get a second opinion... I'm not sure why the vet would say not much could be done for him, it doesn't make sense?
I agree with Willowsprite.
Take your dog to a different Vet.
I agree with Stacey.. take your dog to another vet.. alot can be done for mange...

sounds like your vet is clueless.
Either ask your current veterinarian why he said that nothing could be done about the mange or find another veterinarian. I've had two cats with mange and it was cured with treatment.

Fortunately our dogs haven't had it, but I did ask our veterinarian about it when the cats caught mange (I understand that it is very contagious) and she said that if necessary, we would treat all of our fur kids.

By the way - it did take three months to completely get rid of the mange on the cats, so have patience with the treatments.

Good Luck,

Is it sarcoptic mange or demedex?

Two different types and handled in different ways. The latter one is not "treated per se, but managed until it runs its cource...and then it may flare up again at any time.
Sounds like demodex if it's not harmful to the owner.

But if he is itching and losing hair from it, he needs to be put on meds.

This usually is an Ivomec mixture, and antibiotics to help with secondary infection.

I'm not sure how bad it is, but just so you know...once you start the meds it usually gets worse before it gets better. It can also take up to a month or longer before things get better.

Good Luck.
Hi everyone , So sorry i did leave a lot out , Bam has demodecosis or know has demodex.
He will start with red marks like scabs ,puss filled then starts the hair loss so what starts out to be small turns into this big patch of hair missing from his face hip and paws . We did have him scraped to see what was wrong . Bam has been on antibiotics know for 2 months with no improvements what so ever . He was on them early on only because we thought it was nerves. until we found out further the vet did say that there is some indication that long term use of antibiotics is helpful in controlling chronic cases of demodecosis. I am not sure how this works but perhaps relieving the skin of some of the immunologic burden allows it to fight the demodecosis better. The only other medication for direct control of the mites that you was mention was milbemycin (Interceptor Rx). This is an expensive option and not always effective, either, but it is another alternative. Some vets are increasing the concentration of amitraz (Mitaban Rx) used but I have not been willing to do this yet as we see some problems with toxicity at the recommended dosages.

feel so bad but lost on what to due ???and getting expensive he has already had 2 scapings and had to be put out for both.
That poor little guy, I hope you can find the right treatment for him.
Demodex is not supposed to be itchy. All dogs have the mites but when a dog's immune system is not working properly they may increase so the dog looses fur in places they hang out. Or the dog's dam had it and passed it to the pups, so they are now predisposed to it.

Even the scraping is questionable, as all dogs have the mites. It is the number of them that is found that determines whether or not that is the final diagnosis.

My girl was diagnosed by one vet with demodex, and another one would not comfirm it. Both vets did scrapings and turned up 1 mite. Neither time was she put under. It was quite simple to do. Shave the skin in an area that is already open and raw, and scrape away. Just a tiny amount of material is required and Dixie didn't even notice it being done.

Feel free to pm me and I can go into more detail on what worked, what didn't etc with us.
Our rescue dog Sasha has demodex... we have been treating her for it with Advantage Multi she has had 3 applications so far... she has 3 more they gave us 6 months worth of applications it was only $180.00. It has worked for her.. the hair grew back in and the skin went back to normal colour. She still licks and scratches occasionally but I do not think more then any dog. You could ask about the Advantage Multi.
In Canada the use of the product, Advantage Multi, is still off-label for the treatment of mange. Theis means that it is being used with some success, but the package doesn't mention it.

When I called the manufactuer, Bayer myself, I was told that the American comparable is Advocate, and it is on-label. You may wish to discuss this product with your vet.

I haven't ever owned a sheep dog with mange, but I had a bull dog with mange. We "dipped" her for a while, and that would kill the mange but her poor face would scab over. We switched vets and used heart worm medicine for horses. It worked! She never got it again. I hope that helps.
Sasha's daughter, Sassie is in big trouble with generalized mange. We have tried a lot of things with no success. I brought the info from this site on Advocate and Advantage Multi to my vet and he called his Bayer rep. Neither product is available in the US for at least another year. He said to try to get it through our contacts in Canada. It is a long drive to bring Sassie to Canada (we know because we drove to Bangor to adopt her!) But we'll do it if we have to. But if someone can get it for us we could save a lot of time and hassle. Sassie is adorable and a very good dog. She's 45 pounds at 4 1/2 months so she's going to be a big one! Please help if you can!
Is that something that could be ordered online?
Sassie's Mom.. I sent you a PM with regard to helping out.
Thursday we had an acupuncture treatment to help boost Sassie's immune system. and started giving her Cod Liver Oil. This morning she is hardly scratching at all! Not sure what worked but we're going to keep it up.

We've been "maintaining" Sassie for 6 weeks with some relief from itching and not too much hair loss using baths consisting of Benzoyl Peroxide (opens pores and kills/washes out mites) followed by Neem Oil Shampoo (Kills mites, calms and sooths skin see Naturalcanine.com website). But the mange has spread all over her body with red skin scratching and some angry looking red patches smaller than a quarter. We are waiting for INterceptor to work (nothing yet) or to get theDNA kit to test for Ivermectin sensitivity. Also trying to investigate Advantabe Multi if we can get it from Canada.
I believe the name of the product Advantage Multi is actually Advocate. Made by Bayer.

This sounds sooooo much like what we went through (and as of yesterday are still goign through :( ) with Auntie Dixie. The Advantage is not a miricle drug....might help...might not...

Dixie came from the same place as Sassie's mom. She has been scraped twice and only 1 mite found each time.

I haven't really been convinced that is is/was mange...but more like allergies. We have been treating her for both, but I am convinced that the non-allergy food etc we put her on is the best preventative. Look at my camera and there are some pictures of Dixie's sores and skin when she was really bad. I can PM you some worse ones, if you are interested :) We shaved her down and kept her in T-shirts.

Dudster's Murphy was put on a grain-free kibble so we did that, too. No grains, dairy, beef, lamb, chicken or anything like that. Only fish and rice or fish and potatoe...Plus lots of meds...vitamins, Benedryl, Advantage Multi....It took a few weeks but she finally started to clear up.

But I spoke too soon and last nite she scratched her throat nite, for the first time in weeks. I rubbed her neck in the dark and it was all sticky. Put the light on and sure enough, she scratched her self raw and there was blood all over her neck...the skin looks like hamburger meat.

Arggghhh!!!! I think someone fed her somethig she shouldn't have had. Or she found an old raw-hide or something...or found an old bird in the yard and ate it (poultry)....

Get your girl on some HP Vitaimins (high potency) for skin and coat, to strengthen her skin up....and a non-allergetic kibble.
