Well that was silly

Last week my family came to stay with us and brought us a lovely plague. Last night my husband and I were incredibly ill. To our dog, that meant it was time to play, huzzah!

I went to bed early of course, 6pm, and he woke me up around 9pm to go outside. I let him out and closed the door behind him and instead of going off to do his business, he stood there and stared at me through the sliding glass door. I walked away for a minute to see if that would help, but he pawed at the glass to be let in. I chalked it up to the fact that I usually go outside with him when he goes out and let him back in.

At one in the morning he woke me again and ran through the house to get ouside. I figured this time it was for reals and slipped on my shoes to go out with him. This time I walked to the part of the yard where he's supposed to go potty and he just hung around by the door, standing on the mat where he usually stands to be let back in. I kept standing outside but he just walked around me and nudged me back to the door. So in we went again.

Throughout the night I woke up to him barking. :| I make that face because the only other time he's ever barked, ever, was when my husband came home, and not even on a regular basis. He hears the gate opening, someone's in the yard, he barks. I know all the neighbor dogs bark and are kept outside, but he's never 'barked back' at them. Three times I caught him doing that.

Then this morning I woke up to find that he went potty in the room that we walk through to get outside. After all of that he still had an accident. I was up by 7am this morning so I figured a six hour wait was somewhat reasonable, especially since I usually sleep in on the weekends. Duke is four years old and hasn't ever had accidents before.

Maybe he just thought it'd be fun to see what he could get away with when we were both sick? Any ideas on how to keep this from happening again would be stellar and put to good use.

That's an unusual story. Perhaps he's not feeling well either. Or maybe he's distressed that the two of you are ill. Maybe he's trying to get you to go potty... I really have no clue!

But I did want to jump in and say "Welcome!" to the forum!
Welcome and you must pm with your phone number....maybe we can get together for a play date....

It sounds weird what Duke did, but like Ron said, maybe he was upset with both of you being sick.....
Oh - sympathies!! And welcome!
You said you had family come and stay with you. My sister had stayed with us for a while and when she left Lucky went to the bathroom on her bed. (The only "accident" he has ever had in the house.) It was his way of telling us he was upset with her leaving.

Your dog may just be telling you he is upset with the disruption in his "pact" or household. I would give it a week and see if he calms back down.

And welcome to the forum!
Thank you! I was hoping it was just something along those lines. Our house is usually pretty quiet but when my Dad and brothers are here nothing is ever quiet. Ever. And he got spoiled beyond all belief by my Dad so he's probably (hopefully) just readjusting to the fact that no, he doesn't get to eat our dinner with us every night.

Thanks for the welcome as well. xD I've been reading the forums for as long as I knew I was adopting a sheepdog but haven't had many problems with him so there was no need to post. This has been very helpful.
Welcome :D
I am sure it was from the change in routine.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Welcome! Please post even when your sheepie doesn't have problems. We'd love to share stories and pictures with you!
Welcome!! It does sound like he may have just had an "off" night. I wouldn't worry unless it becomes a habit.
