| I work at a day care for dogs and the dogs there eat poop all the time, it could be nothing at all or it could be an indication of some health problems, my number one question is why is she by poop at night?
if she is in a backyard or large area where there is poop around i would definitely recommend that you either crate her or pick the poop up... if she is in a crate and goes because of puppy accidents then i think you should take her out for a bathroom break during the night. you should probably do this anyway while shes being housebroken, but its probably an indication that she needs to go at night and the problem can be solved by letting her do her business away from her crate. i would also take her to the vet to make sure that she has no health problems. some of the dogs i work with do some weird things (eat poop, eat dog hair, lick the floor) because they have genetic health problems, and some eat poop because they are not getting enough nutrition and they smell it in the waste and eat it. but some dogs do it even if there is no problem.... so my advice would be to take her to the vet and tell them the problem to make sure that she has no serious health issues. and also to make sure that she is in a very clean place all the time at night good luck! |
| Funny you should mention this. I caught my pup doing the same nasty habit.
I asked the vet if it was a vitamin deficiency and she said no it's just a bad habit that needs to be nipped in the bud now. She suggested sprinkling Adolph's Meat Tenderizer in his food. Supposedly whatever comes out makes to poo taste horrible. (Did I just say that??!!) Anyway, it's been working for us & haven't had a problem since. |
| I read a case study about a dog with a similar trait. The author, an experianced breeder/trainer, looked at what other traits the dog had and if the dog had reluctantly assumed the alpha role in the household. There are loads of posts about Alpha traits, who eats first? Who comes to who? Who walks through doors first..pulling at leads etc... They suggest that when you are happy you are Alpha and you dog is relaxed then tackle the problem by toilet training working at the times when your dog is most likely to make bowel movements. The reasoning behind this is that a reluctant Alpha dog will try to please a stressed out owner by clearing up their mess. Be at hand to clean up immediately after and offer a reward when all has gone to plan. When things go wrong remain calm and ignore the behaviour.
Corgettes and Pineapples are also said to be unpalatable so you might want to try mixing these in with food. Good luck...S, L & girls. |

| It's usually not a medical problem. I would discuss it with the Vet at your next visit - but it's probably just a gross habit that many puppies have!
I've heard that putting a few tablespoons of pumpkin (canned) in with their food prevents them from eating poop (if he's eating another dog's poop - then put it in that dog's food too). Don't know why it works - but it does! Is she pooping during the night??? You may want to try crating her at night - it helps alot with the housebreaking. Good Luck! Kristen |

That's right. a gross, nasty habit. Shanti used to play with his poop. Didn't eat it but lick it as a candy! yiakkkkk!!! so what I did was pick it up Asap. After a while, Shanti got the idea and ran to me barking "to order me" to pick his poop up! Good luck Dani |

My puppy Koko eats her poop too most of the time by her self. Today it was different she ate it right in front of me!  P.S. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO OR IF IT'S NORMAL PLEASE REAPLY YOUR ANSWER. |

I agree with all of the previous suggestions on this post, we had some luck with behavior modification with Chelsea that you may want to try with Koko. We always took Chelsea out on a leash, even in the fenced back yard, it was rough (winter in Chicago) but after a few months she no longer 'remembered' that she wanted to eat the poop. We kept her yard VERY clean, and because we were right there when she did it, we whisked it away. She was only allowed to play in the yard when we knew it was clean. I really think she forgot that she wanted to eat the poop because it wasn't around. OCCASIONALLY we see her sniffing her poops now (14 months) a little too closely, but she has yet to pick it up again. Now we know when she is going to poop and we praise her immediatley and call her in for a treat so she won't be tempted. I have to think a Milk Bone tastes better than a poop! Good Luck! Up. |
| Pirate has never had an issue eating his poopies, but absolutely loves digging for buried treasury in the kitty litter pan, and eating their poopies. I have heard that cats don't fully digest their food, so there are still some tasty morsels left. Its really gross, cuz he ends up with kitty poop breath  , so...now we've put a gate on the door that leads to the kitty pan...the cats can jump it, but Pirate is blocked! Yes- kitty litter poop- yumm  This is why I'm buying the girls an auto kitty litter box now, way before we get the pupper. My family has a terrible time keeping the cavalier spaniels out of their kitty's litter boxes. Hopefully, if the litter box is always clean, pup won't have time to get to the poop before it is wisked away!

| I also have a yorkie puppy that is eating poops but loves that hot meal prepared from my adult pom better than her own-although she will eat her own. She has her nose right under the tail and has it before you catch her. She refuses to poop unless he is out with her. I stay right there be if I turn my head for a second she has it. She started doing this when she was about six months old, about three days after I took her off of Nutra Cal and put her on regular vitamins. I've had both of them on meat tenderizer, distaste and for-bid for three months, didn't work. She does seem to like his better than her own so I put them both on the same food, that didn't help. Yesterday her vet said it was just a trait from the past when dogs lived in caves and the puppies ate the poop to keep the caves clean (this cave isn't that dirty) and because they didn't always get enough to eat (she has plenty to eat). I put her back on the nutri-cal to see what happens. Hopefully this will work but years ago when I was a vet tech we always said it had nothing to do with vitamins. Please work! |
| None of my OES ever had that problem, but we did have a Shih Tzu that did this. We used the same method as mentioned by uppetybup, also during the cold Wisconsin winters! The leash on and as soon as she went we whisked her away from it. It didn't take long at all and she quit. Thank goodness.

| Ok, what i dont understand is everyone suggests msg or some other chemical to make poop taste bad...... Are we forgetting that msg causes cancer? every unnatural thing you give your dog is a side effect or problem just waiting to happen... Does anyone realize that dog food itself have all kinds of chemicals that cause majority of problems in our animals? Here is more food for thought. Dog food is from other animals or crops that couldnt pass inspection for humans to eat... great... lets feed our adorable animals it... Heres another thing... look at the ingreidents on your dog food..... Think thats all thats in there? WRONG!!! theres a loop hole where they dont have to list ingredients that have been added if they get it from a third party company... Another words.... If meat companies add... say msg or some other harsh chemical to their meat then sell it to the dog food industry... they are not required to list any thing they themselves did not add..... great huh? So go buy some natural dog food.... see if that dosent change perhaps your dogs itching, loose stool, bitting, licking or even poop eating.... if your son or daughter was eating thier poop... would you feed them poison that causes cancer to stop them? |

| My Bella use to eat her poop. There is a product called Forbid , you just sprinkle it on thier food, I bought it off the internet, and it cured the problem. IDt took about a month. I guess it make the poop taste bad to them. It is a pretty common problem. Don't be discouraged. |
| Meat tenderizor stopped Frank from doing it. Now he won't even go 10 ft near his own poo.
Definitely more of a behavior thing vs medical reason. Re MSG - I think you're supposed to stay away from it if you have high blood pressure.  |

| Thankfully Barkley has never eaten his poop. We pick it up in the backyard pretty quickly but if he encounters some that we've missed or haven't picked up yet he'll just sniff at it then turn away... he must realize it stinks.
MSG sometimes gives me a tummy ache, but so do a lot of things. I bet the hazardous effects of MSG are like that of aspartame. You have to drink a swimming pool of diet pop every day to get enough aspartame to cause you harm. I can sense a Ron joke coming on.... |
I heard on CNN yesterday that red wine is good for you, the REALLY good thing is it only take about 200 glasses a day, according to studies done on rats. Could get expensive but in the interest of health......  |

hi benji also started doing this also my friend who also has oes told me about some pills to get and put in tghere food so they dont like the smell and stops them eating popp i used them for a few days and he stopped eating poop occasianly he still will rarley now i dont give him the pills all the time just when he starts back up but now he doesnt do it after awhlle they stop but ithe pills helped you can get thme at petsmart i dont remember what they are called ile loo when im home for you good luck there mouths smell bad after you can teel right away. i guess it must taste good LOL YAK |

| I believe most puppies eat their stool, just a puppy thing. I would not worry to much, try to pick it up ASAP and they won't get into the habit.
My Dallas only preferred when it was frozen, so he only ate poop in the winter, but it stopped as he matured. Sara Catherine LOVES kitty poops and there is no way stopping her. So the litter box is out of her reach down in the basement and the door to the basement is only open wide enough for the cat to get through. Ingrid |

| my dog Kady eats our other dog Cooper's poop. we tried feeding them both pineapple but it didnt work do you think meat tenderizer would work for a stubborn dog who will eat ANYTHING?! |

My OES pup Gatsby is 11 months and not only eats his poop, but my lab and rottie's. I try to pick them up as quickly as possible but he always finds ones that I miss. He and the other dogs also like to snack in the cat box as well. I am going to try the Deter. I hope this phase passes as the lab and rottie have never done this. With the exception of the cat box. |
| We have had Rufus on DETER for 4 weeks now, he still eats his poop if we don't get there quick enough.. but he SMELLS horrible now!! I think the deter makes his poop smell horrible & it seems to be seeping through his skin kinda like when a person has too much garlic only this smells ...kinda like marmite |
| Bella ate her poop between 2 to 4 months. We used DETER and picked it up regularly, and she stopped about 4 to 5 months and it has not been a problem since. I don't know if the DETER worked the scooping worked or she just grew out of it. One bad habbit down many more to go. |

I train dogs and I know eating poo is normal! I have trained lots of dogs not to eat there poo by simply doing an easy thing. Does your puppy eat fast? The reasoning for eating poo is because when a dog eats to fast their food doesn't have time to digest. And when he poops after eating his poop is still like fresh dog food for him. I would recommend when feeding him (he will get it after a few times of feeding) you just start out giving him a tiny bit of food in his bowel. When he is finished give him a tiny more, then again and again till he eats all his food. That will teach him to slow down when eating and he won't be tempted to eat his own poo. And if all else fails give him a slice of canalope in his food. He defiently wont want to eat that poo. Good Luck! |

I doubt that the food he ate 15 minutes ago is the feces he is eating out of the yard. Food doesn't digest that fast. |

I adopted 2 little Chugs pups since last summer & found out one of their bad habbits was eating their own & each other poos. I've tried to clean as soon as they poos but sometime I miss. I have tried diff. dog foods but they still do. I read everyone suggestions & got some pumkin (cans), meat tenderiser. I gave it to my dogs last night. This morning all their p___ still there & I know it works. Thank you so much for your website and everyone suggestions. I feel so relieved. Have a pleasant day. |
