Degree Requirements
EMS dispatchers are EMT Basics who have completed an EMS Dispatchers course. Persons interested in a career as an emergency medical dispatcher, should contact their local emergency medical services (ambulance) companies, as in-house training programs are available with the emergency medical services companies. First Responders must complete an accredited training course (up to 40 hours). Students entering an EMT program must be at least 18 years of age; have a high school diploma/GED; possess a valid driver’s license and a good driver’s record. EMT- basic requires about 120 classroom hours; EMT- intermediate requires 200-400 hours of training; and EMT - paramedic requires students to complete a two-year associate degree program in emergency medical technology from an accredited program, involving approximately 800-900 hours of training.
