Puppy food? What are you feeding now?

Hey guys! Have not been around in a while. Was out of town and Allie takes sooo much of my time! Some nights she only gets up 1 time, others 2 times! So I am still sleep deprived!

Anyways, what puppy food are you guys feeding? She is 10 weeks now, I have been giving her Purina puppy chow...The last week, she is pooping alot and it is very lose, but not runny.....Also, she has puked 2 times in about a week, 3 hrs each time after eating, and it is not digested all the way. Any suggestions? The local pet store is trying to get me to buy a 30.00 bad, he claims is easy to digest and less poop? Can that be true? I will call and get the name. Thanks for any advice!

Hi! We are currently feeding Fozzie the same food as you, Purina Puppy Chow, but will be trying to switch over to Nutro puppy food in the next few weeks. The Nutro has done wonders for Annie's breath so I want him to be on the same brand.
Good food really does make all the difference. When I switched my oldest to Merrick, it was like night and day. A good food will result in fewer, firmer stools and can be easier to digest. Better foods don't have corn and other hard to digest ingredients, their primary ingredients will be meat and brown rice, rather than meat by products and corn. $30 isn't too bad depending on what it is. You can also feed less of a quality food so the price tag is justified. I don't even want to tell you what I pay for Merrick...

A quick aside, if he's trying to sell you Avoderm, don't buy it. I'll give you a bag. I bought the puppy food for my 8 month old but the pieces are too small for him and he makes a huge mess. I gave up and gave him something else!

We feed Pip Eagle Pak large and giant breed puppy. It's about 30$ for a big bag- 40lbs I think. Plus my store has a buy 10 get the 11th free offer too! Yay for local pet food stores :) I'm very happy with it, and it's what my breeder feeds her champion show dogs- and they all look AWESOME! So it works for me!!! :P

Now if I can just get Pippin to STOP EATING THE CAT FOOD!
Purina puppy chow is thought of by most as the bottom of the barrel, one of the worst foods you can buy, with the exception of no name.
I think you'll see a HUGE improvement when you switch, but do it slowly or the pup will get diarreah. You may want to have the vet do a stool check anyway to make sure there isn't something else going on as well.
$30 a bag is not bad at all... you definitely get what you pay for.... cheap food means more filler and garbage instead of quality nutrition. That means they have to eat more, and poop more, and actually still get less out of it. A more expensive food is cheaper in the long run because your dog will eat less, waste less, and be healthier saving potential vet bills in the future.
:clappurple: Yay again for local pet stores!!!

Also- when trying to decide on a brand to feed, check out the ingrediants list on the side of the bag- the better foods will have less filler ingrediants- and more of the good stuff. That's another reason I LOVE Eagle Pak- lots of good meats and veggies, no filler!
Thanks guys. I also realized after I posted, Allie has been on the antibiotic for the urinary tract, so could also be making her stool lose....
The thing with Purina, my dad had researched all the high end foods and low end foods about 8 years ago, found out alot of the expensive ones had ground up DOG in it!!! So with his lab, he feed the lamb and rice purina....Now, I am not saying it is still the same, will do my own research, but also wanted to see what you guys are feeding the little OES"S! I have a friend who swears by Iams....I also do not mind feeding the more expensive, as long as dog is not in it (Gross!!!!) and if there is less poop to clean up, cool! I am going to call the Local pet store right now, to get the brand he has...will post it later.
Ok, just spent 1hr on internet, reviews and then ran to the local famill owned pet store. Went with the Nutro puppy for large breeds....Mixed with 1/2 her old stuff, she loved it!
We've always been a Nutro household....puppy and adult.
We're also a Nutro household. Louie seems to like it okay but then again he's never been overly excited about his dog food..but people food now that's another story
Wellness Puppy Food (dry) and at each meal, three times a day, has a protein (chicken, beef) and a vegetable mixed in with the Wellness. We also offer him yogurt and goat milk daily. He has three stools a day, one within thirty minutes of each feeding and they are not loose at all. It is a bit more on the expensive side, but he is doing terrific!! He is 11 weeks old now! :D :D :D :D :D
They are getting Science diet in the small bites. They are 3 months old now :)
I AM So Happy That Everyone Is Reading The Labels On The Dog Food Bag!!!!!!!!!! I have been owned Sheepies for 38 years.......I studied Canine Nutrition for 3 years daily...... So I know Just Enough To Be Dangereous....... WHEAT is a MAJOR Problem wiath this breed. It causes yeeast infections and skin allergeries..........CORN is a cheap filler. We can't digest it and THEY can't digest it.It just goes straight threw them........ There are more good quality brands out in the last 3 years. I personally think Solid Gold is the best food out. But, It is very difficult to get in Texas. Canadea, Eagle Pack, Blue Buffalo, Evo are all good foods. I understand that Old Mother Hubbard that ownes Wellness is selling thr Company. SO I am looking at what I am going to change to. I go thru about 1/2 of a 40 bag a day here......Plus the raw meat and veggies I feed... So I have to keep it around $30 = $35 a bag. You do the math. But still NO WHEAT AND NO CORN AND REAL MEAT NOT CHICKEN MEAL OR BY PRODUCTS> I just hate it when people write in Caps............ But, again I am so Happy that everyone is reading the lables. Shug, how do you feel about the Nutro? I assume you mean to basically stay away from the commercial grocery store food? Just the few days of research I did on the internet and advice from this forum and other dog owners, I can not believe I feed my cats that for 14 years!!!

Chris, There are 2 dry foods Nupro and Nutro that I get confused about. One is owned by Petsmart or Petco one of the big Pet Stores. I am headed to our Big City Fundraiser ....Tonight I will look at them. Someone just posted about using one of them and having great results. Differnt foods work for differnt Babies...I am trying to figure out which one I am switching to since Old Mother Hubbard is selling.. Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
