Undercoat Matting

We brush and brush and brush and brush.... but when it comes time to take him to the groomers they say his undercoat is matted!!!
What do I do....????? Even the vet who neutered him said he has some matting in that area (which he hates having brushed....)

What tool(s) are you brushing (and brushing and brushing) with?

A slicker will only do the top coat...
I know many people recommmend "The Line Brushing Method" ... Whatever that is.

I found this quote on the web (about havanese dogs)
"The most efficient method is line brushing where the entire coat is brushed in layers from the skin out. This is usually easiest if the dog is lying on its side. With one hand, the hair is parted to the skin and held down while the other hand gently brushes through the hair below the part. Once this section is smooth and tangle free, another section of hair is pulled down along the part and groomed in the same way. You may need to moisten each layer with a light mist of conditioner or coat dressing before brushing."

I know NEOESR has a couple of videos available, but I don't know if it goes into line brushing. One of them is for dogs in show coats.

Hope this helps.
HI,
I groom mine twice a week, and it takes 2/3 hours each time,
i have a old table and she has been taught to lie on it right from a pup,she lays on her side and i spray a bit of her with a gentle leave in condioner(sp),then i comb her alittle bit a a time making sure i get right down to skin,do a little bit at a time thats the most importent thing and get down to the skin, move on to next bit spray again,
i brush her in between the groomings but thats just to make her look nice for me,its the combing that does the jos propely,if you wont to show your dog then the use of the comb will not be for you as it does pull a lot of the under coat out,but your OESD will still look as nice,
i think what i do is this line parting thing
hope i have helped,
its worth the hard work, even if it onlys lasts a day or two,

By the way... the "rule of thumb" I was given when I got my Jake back in '92 was this: Every inch of hair adds 1 hour per week of grooming, and a show dog has 12 inches. 8O

We decided on the puppy cut! :D
i think i am going to try a leave in conditioner for walter next time (he is a mess after his showers), is there any specific kind you guys would recommend?
I do the line grooming thing... i figured that out after the first 25 dollar extra charge on the grooming bill for matted undercoat.... I part and comb and part and comb.... I brush every day and on wednesdays and thursdays my fiance and i both brush him to make sure he is good. He hates haviing his backside brushed.... and his tummy.
Do all sheepies pee on their fur??

we usually have walters tummy and back legs trimmed so that it wont mat up from the urine, it helps a lot
I use the "aussie miracle hair insurance leave in conditioner" it has tea tree oil in,everyone says how nice she smells, its in a spray bottle,
