WARNING: Non OES puppy post!

We are crossing over to the dark side and will be bringing an entirely different dog breed into our family this weekend.

He is a Norfolk Terrier (average adult weight 12 lbs.) and his name will be Hagus (yes, the Scottish delicacy) and he was born on Friday the 13th in January 2006.

Here he is pictured on the right:

It should become quite interesting here at the house with this little guy running around. They have very gregarious personalities, not supposed to be yappy either. I've met several OES people that also have either Norfolks or Norwich Terriers and it's interesting how people gravitate to certain breeds.

Wow, Deb! I'm curious to know how this came about if you'd like to share. Someone I met owns and shows both OES and Norwich Terriers. When I went to visit her house, she had 2 OES and about 6 Norwich (Mom and pups). They were adorable and from what I remember didn't bark much. They snorted and walked under the OES...very cute sight! CONGRATS!

When we first went to pick up Frank from the breeder's house, she had an area sectioned off and these 6 little Norfolks came running up to greet us. They were very adorable and Chris (my husband) loved them too. I was never really a small dog kind of a person, but they were impressionable little rough & tumble dogs,. So we've kind of been waiting all of this time to get a pup as litters are scarce, as the average litter size is only 2-3 puppies, and the breeder community is small. We were supposed to get a Norfolk puppy before we got Rebecca but that fell through. So finally a puppy was available for us. And yes they snort. It's a character trait for both the Norfolks & Norwiches.

I might know that person you are talking about. Is it Liz Fujikawa? If so, I met her and all of her dogs at the OES Centennial where she judged. She was very nice as I told her we had a Norfolk in our future. I had Frank with me and she told me that the Norfolk & he would be best buds. That was great to hear!
Congrats! It'll be interesting to see their interaction.

Norwich terriers always remind me of Best in Show...
Yes, it was Liz I was speaking of. How exciting! After we left her house, Steve and I were cracking up at how cute the Norfolks were. If we were small dog people we'd try one of them or a mini-Schnauzer. We had gone to Liz's house to see if Steve would be allergic to OES (this was pre-Annie). If he had reacted, we would have had no idea if it was OES or the Norfolk. Thank goodness he didn't react. Can't wait to hear all of your crazy puppy stories! :D
He is adorable!

What is the difference between a Norfolk and a Norwich? 8O
Wasn't it a Norfolk that won Best of Breed in that awful movie?

Are you going to show him or is he a pet?

You need to join the OOOPS puppy support group, now!
nicole, you might be right. I know it was a little brown "N..." terrier...
Deb,
Congrats on the Hagus.
I hope Rebecca and Frank get along well with him.
I can't wait to hear puppy stories :D
Of course we will need pictures

I am not sure exactly what the differences are but the major difference are the ears which the Norfolks are floppy and the Norwich have the pricks. Plus the Norwich's face is more fox-like where the Norwich is more square. They have different body angulation too.

Eugene Levy owned a Norwich Terrier in the movie "Best in Show".

And he will be a pet first & foremost, - his bite is a little undershot and if it corrects we will show him to his championship. The thing I'm looking forward to the most is finding out what it is like to live with a terrier...
How exciting, Deb! :go: Hagus is just ADORABLE!! :hearts: Can't wait to see pictures, hear stories of how he gets along with Frank and Rebecca. And you're picking him up on Mother's Day week-end, too! How appropriate!!
He really is adorable, Deb!! :hearts: How exciting for you!

I like the name Hagus. How did you choose it?
He's a cutie, that for sure!!! Congrats :clappurple: I can't wait to hear how Hagus does with the Sheepies!

Because he looks like a sausage!

Just kidding of course, he's so sweet! He is definitely the better looking of the two pics in the picture too. ;) I love those little guys. The first time I ever touched one, I was really surprised at how corse their hair was-- not rough but rougher than I expected. They're ratters, aren't they?

Deb, maybe we can start our own little "Other Puppy Breed" section. Mine's giant but he's still only 8 months old!

OMG a two headed Hagus!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Run for your lives!

Oh wait, you did that card already... 8)
Man that's the best plate of hagus I've ever seen...

YOUR TURN RON!
Glad you guys will accept him just the same as any other OES related dog.

My husband just corrected me on the spelling of the pup's name, it should be HAGGIS, (sorry UK people!) We chose the name Haggis because it kind of reminded us of the tough guys in the movie Braveheart and we originally thought the Norfolks origin was in Scotland but it appears to be more Irish & British.

Stacy, Liz has Norwiches, not Norfolks (sorry for the confusion)

Jill, yes they are ratters, so where our sheepdogs have worn off all the grass in our yard the Norfolk can now dig holes in it. Aren't all the little terriers ratters? How much does Bear weigh now anyhow? I thought Kommondors didn't get much bigger than OES.

Funny comment Ron, I'm already having anxiety about what the card will be this year. It should be interesting to see if the cat will still rule the house.
Congrats! I love those little dogs... :)

I thought the food version was spelled "haggis"?

Also, if I remember correctly, the Norfolk Terrier and the Norwich Terrier are the same breed, but when the ears were different in some a few breeders concentrated on that and when it bred true it became it's own breed. Some modifications have been made over the years to each breed, but I think they are almost identical.

Yes, I'm sorry, the name is supposed to be the food version. Tough guy Scottish dish but also silly name at the same time.

I have to look at my Norfolk book but yes Stacey you are pretty much correct on that. They used to compete as one breed. I just forget which came first... and some other physical nuances evolved but same temperament.
He is really cute! I think he'll be awesome for you - they're supposed to be BIG dogs in a little body!

They sure don't seem like it in pictures but they are deceptively larger. The standard is 27 1/2 and 100 pounds and up. They're long and solid under all that coat. The Hungarian Koms are bred even larger and his dad was from Hungary. His foster mom has had and bred Koms for 20 years and predicted him to be very big. Her biggest boy tips the scales at 140 and she thinks Bear will be bigger than him!
Thanks for sharing... excited to learn how the "little one" gets along with the others! GOOD LUCK!!
:D
i love the name congrates on your new puppy :yay:
ahh - so cute!
That's the breed my husband wants when these guys go on to the Bridge. He figures he'll be too old for another large dog plus wants a lap dog for a change. Oh well.

lapdog? Sheepdogs are lapdogs! Just have to have a large lap... :D
Just gorgeous and a lovely breed too, tough little dogs.

You are going to have so much fun with that new little bundle.

Love the name, can't wait to see more pictures and how he settles in with the rest of the crew. :D
hehehehe
Hagus... what will the neighbors think when you call him to come inside? :D

What a cutie pie. Congratulations on your newest addition!
What adorable faces!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see more pictues!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!! :yay:
Did we even take pictures yesterday? Deb, you're supposed to keep on top of these things!!!

P.S. Deb almost didn't get her puppy. I was carrying him around at the show and a vendor said I could have whatever I wanted in exchange for the puppy. Heh heh heh!
OH and he's really, really cute!!!!!!
I guess I will need to take lots of photos!!

The 2 hour car ride home went great, Haggis slept the entire time in his crate. First night sleeping went fine. He cried for the first half hour when we put him in his crate but then slept without a peep all the way until 7:30 am. Need to work on the housebreaking but it's so tiny compared to sheepdog pup accidents.

He is completely sweet & adorable. Tail waggles constantly. Wants to play with the big dogs. The bummer thing is that Frank, who ALWAYS MAKES FRIENDS with any warm-blooded thing, is completely ignoring him!! I thought they were going to be buds! I hope that this is just a phase, but I think Frank is letting him know how he ranks in the pack.

Rebecca doesn't seem to mind him at all.

And btw... Maxxm's Toby has beaten Frank the last 3 times he's competed against him in the ring!!! Maybe Frank's mad about that!!
Frank will adjust!! Ignoring is better than snarling and snapping!!!!
