He's really upset with me...help!

I just got our 6 month OES, Charlie neutered yesterday. :( He had the laser surgery done so I dropped him off at the vet in the morning, happy-go-lucky, best friend in the world...but when I picked him up that afternoon, he would not even look at me. The ride home in the car, he ignored me completely and at home last night, he stayed in a different room and wouldn't look at me or anything. I gave him some of his favorite treats, loved on him loads and kept talking to him in a calm voice.

He's making me feel like the worst person in the world! I called our breeder and she said he's not mad at me for getting him neutered but he's mad because I left him alone at the vet all day.

Has anyone else had this happen following surgery, vet visit, etc? Will it blow over or is there some magic trick to let him know I'm still his best friend?

Cheers,
Rick

I am sorry Charlie is mad at you! Lucy gets like that everytime we go out of town. It last for a few days then she is back her happy go luck self. Don't worry, it won't last! Soon he will be your best friend again!

hey Rick!

Cheer up- Dogs DO NOT have advanced enough brains to do something as complicated as associate you with the cause of surgery! Charlie just had major surgery, is in pain, and is bound to be a little out of sorts in general. Give him time, and he'll be back to his old bouncy self before long!

In the menatime, if you feel a bit disconnected, do some quiet treat rewarded exercises with him, like controlled sits and downs. Remember, nothing too active, as he heals from surgery!!!
He's probably a little sore and loopy from meds too. Give him some time and he'll be back to normal, goofy puppydom!
Thanks for the encouragement! He's a bit better today. Licked me in the face lots and told me he still loves me! It's just so hard to see him this way. He certainly has ahold of my heart strings...tight!

I'll let you know when he bounces back!
Aw, I'm so sad for you...Especially since I'm taking Walter in for his surgery soon...gee, I hope he doesn't get too mad/anti-social :(

Hope he's feeling better soon!
He's not mad at you - imagine if you came out of surgery, you'd be a bit quiet and want some rest and not have too much company, probably how he feels right now. He'll perk up soon - he knows where to come for hugs and kisses - I suspect the poor little fella is licking his wounds, so to speak - bless
I am happy to report that Charlie is back to his usual goofy, lovable self! Only three days after his surgery, he bounced back and told me that he's not mad at me and he still loves me. He was just in a bit of pain and needed some alone time. I guess I am the typical worried new parent of an awesome Old English Sheepdog.

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and info!

Cheers,
Rick & Charlie
There were some hormone changes.. perhaps for both of you! ;)

It was definitely an ordeal for both of you :(

He's healed quickly Your relationship is solid.

Give him a rub for me while he's licking your chin!
Glad to hear everything is back to normal. :D
Give him a hug and a kiss, glad he's feeling better. Dogs live in the moment , he won't remember anything about the ordeal past the first post op dog bisquit!!
