Baby names question-Any regrets?

I was just wondering...

I have tons of friends and coworkers, etc. having babies right now and some of them are giving their kids some interesting names.

I was just wondering if anyone ever regretting naming your child/children something...or wished later on that you would have chosen something different. 8)

No regrets here..............but yeah! something's in the water!!!! Bunch of new babies coming this year!

I think the most interesting is, my BFF is naming her baby (if it is a girl) Suki!

As long as her last name isn't Yaki! HA HA Ron, beat you to it.
I think if the child's name doesn't suit them, they end up doing something about it when they are older... for instance- My grandmother's name is Ruth Corrine... but she is NOT a Ruth, not at all!!!! She goes by Corrine... even her check's say R. Corrine, I didn't even know she was a ruth until I was an adult and looked at my birthday money check  I wonder why she didn't just change it when she got married :?:

That's my mom's name. Except hers is spelt Suk Hui (Suke He)

She has a sisters named: Mei (ME), Hui (HE), .....and Bok Hui (Boke HE)
The other sisters don't have weird sounding names. I mean.. I could tell you them, but they would just sound like Korean names ;)

All VERY popular Korean names including my moms. But of course it sounds strange and funny to American.s

I Absolutely positively do not regret naming my son lil J. 8)

Sounds like YUKI! :D Which is a name commonly heard in Japan. :D
My personal favorite asian name is Sakura (A japanese name meaning cherry blossom) I thikn it is so pretty... anfd i really like flower names. I think when I have kids I'll stick with a more traditional western flower though, like Laurel or Heather

I don't know...I've thought about it, but always thought that people would think I'm a poser if I changed it (not that I care what other people think, but... ) But maybe I don't dislike my name enough to really want to do anything about it.
My cousin and I had all of our kids around the same time. Her and her husband were not in agreement on names (thank goodness!), because she wanted to name them Cloud (boy) Sky (boy) , Rainbow (girl) and Air (boy)
I gave my kids names that I hoped would not be shortened, because I can't stand some of the short forms I hear, it just makes the name sound... I don't know... I just don't like it. Ashley often gets shortened to Ash though, and Tyler gets shortened to Ty, and Aaron I thought was safe from it for sure, but some of his friends call him Ron. I never shorten them though.

Ummm no disrespect but I hope the husband got his way...I think some parents just don't consider how mean kids on playgrounds are.

But since I don't have kids I can't contribute in that way. But I will say I waffle between disliking my name and thinking its okay. I was named after my dad except given feminine versions of his name :D So that part I like. Sometimes I just think it sounds too young (my first and middle names together) Jamie is okay except it's not .....a pretty name. If that makes sense.
My husband LOVES the name Jamie, if that makes you feel better :P
REGRETS???? YUP, sure do.......... I wish I'd given my kids a different
LAST NAME    (which translates into a different FATHER :excited: )
Well, like willow, I thought that my oldest would be safe with the Jason. Strange though, it was me though that started calling him Jase instead of Jason. I had a fit with my parents and my ex's parents with my youngest, Marcus. They all wanted to call him Marc. I won that one though, he is still Marcus.
GINNY - You crack me up!! :excited: :yay: :twitch:

Yes, her husband definitely won!!! LOL Their names ended up being Todd, Shawn, Samantha and Cody.
First off, Ginny, youre driving me crazy with your new favorite :excited: lol

I kinda have a regret on my own name.....Full name is Darcia (pronounced Darsha)....everyone pronounces it Darceea....yuck....so hence I go by Darcy.....I like my full name but cringe at every mispronounciation.....and add a silent g to the last name, in which most cases feel the need to try actually pronounce it....sigh....

Darcy, I know how you feel, when my parents first named me they spelt it Chelsea but everyone kept pronouncing it Chel-c-ah. So back then they switch it to Chelsey. My sister's name is very unusual. Her name is Verity Ann. My parent's again didn't think that through cuz her whole name rhymes. Mean Mom and Dad.

Cool!! Don't get me wrong sometimes I really like my name. It does fit because it's not really a very girly name and I'm not really a girly girl. But sometimes I wish my name were pretty like say....Isabella
HEY DARCIA!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS ONES FOR YOU:

:excited:

:excited: :excited: ok maybe these TWO HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ya gotta LOVE the little guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish we had spelled Jakob the traditional way (Jacob). We weren't trying to be "different". My husband is Norwegian, so we went with the Scandanivan spelling. It's SO hard finding personalized stuff for him. I didn't even think of that. I also didn't mean to give him the same name as Bob Dylan's son...lol I didn't even know until someone mentioned it. His name is Jakob Dylan, Jake's name is Jakob Dylan (our last name)...

With Brandon, my husband named him..not me. I'm still upset because I wanted to name him Nicholas Ryan. ;) I absolutely loved that name, and it was his name most of my pregnancy. Then, he was born 5 days before Christmas and Jason said that he wasn't naming him Nicholas because he'd get picked on. Like anyone else would think of Saint Nicholas. So, his name is Brandon Michael, very common traditional name.

Our daughter was Kayla Nicole, I LOVED her name.

If we ever have another, the boy WILL be Nicholas Ryan (I don't care if he's born on Christmas day - lol) and the girl's name we have picked out is Sarah Elizabeth.

I wish my parents would have called me by my first name. I hate going by my middle name, but it's too late to change it now. I like Susan better than Gail too, lol
JakobandBrandonsmom wrote:

I'm sort of the opposite-my middle name can be shortened into two great names one of which is Lea. I would love to go by that-but as you say it's too late (or just too darn difficult  ) to change now.
My mom was so hoping for a Christmas baby so she could name her Noel. Instead, she got me in July so, I got Noel as a middle name instead. She kept my sister and me with relatively simple first names to offset our long last name!
My poor little brother...you know those bubbles you had to fill out on scantron tests? His name is 27 letters long! And mine was 23, so not far behind! I remember being the last one to finish filling out those bubbles!

It'll be interesting when the day comes to name my kids...so far my husband and I DO NOT agree on ANY names. He'll be like, I love this name...and I'm like, EWWW (great convo, huh)
My name is quite unusual but I grew up near DC with kids from all different cultures! Now I understand why my new teachers had a funy look when they called my name

College is where it dawned on me. Imagine late at night, music hopping and a cute boy asking What? Mark? No, Lark! Dark? :? No Lark! Lara? No (flapping my hands as if I am a bird) Lark like the bird, you know
Everyone always misprounces my name.
It's Elissa pronounced like Mona Lisa.... Drop off the Mon.
Everyone always calls me "Alyssa" I did use the spelling Elisa for a while and people pronouced my name correctly..... But decided it did look better with two S's. So back to being called Alyssa

My Mom's first name is Fern. She didn't even know it was her name until she was 6 yrs old. Her brother told her that her name was Fern and she started crying. She ran to her Mom and found out that they had been using her middle name... Judith, since she was a baby because she didn't respond to Fern. I wouldn't have either.
In the Greek Orthodox tradition, a child is technically named by the Godparents. My husband's aunt was named Amelia (Ah-may-lee-ah, not Ah-meel-ya) by her parents, but wasn't christened until she was two years old as there was another baby on the way (my mother-in-law), so they decided to christen them together. When the Godparents went to name Amelia during the ceremony, they changed her name to Sofia, as the Godfather had just lost his sister by that name. To keep peace, her name was officially changed to Sofia. Can you imagine being called one name for the first two years of your life, and then, one someone else's whim, having your name changed????
My real first name shall remain a mystery to all. I think of an old lady whenever I hear my name. in fact, my husband's grandma is the only other person I know with this name. Weird how we have the same first and last name now (me and his grandma). Mr. J had to find out through my mom what my first name was (which she said by accident when we were dating). Reason why I go by something else. :cow:
ButtersStotch wrote:

Noel was supposed to be my name, somehow got changed to Holly  Following the theme (birthday is Dec 20) I guess they could have named me Rudolph or Vixen  I always hated my name and wanted to be a Susie or Jenny or something common.
I work in an elementary school, so I have seen them all.
The made up names, the names spelled incorrectly and not changed legally, the unusal spelling and names from other countries. We also have kids with one set of names wanting to go by another set of names.... And names we will never be able to say correctly, as much as we try.

We can call your child anything you want, but the legal name is going to be on all of the documents. The first name is considered the call name - the one the teacher is going say out loud on the first day, every year.
If you want the cute stuff with your child's name on it, go see what is out there now and how it is spelled.
Check out the initals of the full name. Make sure it doesn't spell out a word you will regret forever.

Boy isn't THAT the truth. When I was a little girl my mother was expecting a baby. The whole family was excited. Quite sadly the little girl was stillborn, her nam was Peggy Irene, after myh mother's Aunt. It wasn't til years later years later that someone in the family realized what the the poor child's initials would have been (my last name starts with a G) P.I.G. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Luckily in later years the family was able to see the humor in it.
mine is zoe denise

people always pronounce denise wrong and i've given up correctting them

my maiden name was Hellen and boy was i glad to change it to thompson

people were like

what your surname
i say hellen
they say no love your surname
i say hellen
then they looked at me like i'm stupid
and i say my name is zoe denise helln do you need to see id!!!

and all through school the teachers would call me hellen from the class list and i would ignore them untill they realised they had got it wrong

my son is Isaac Ian hopefull he won't get picked on but my hubby really wanted to call his son isaac may be his little friends will call him zach or something when he goes to school

zoe and einy
My mom's birthday was Christmas day and she always wished she had been named something to do with the day. So when I was born in November (kinda close to Christmas), this was her chance. It was between Natalie and Christine - I'm SO glad Christine won out!! :phew:

I never go by Christine, though. I've always shortened it to Chris. Not legally, but just to be called. My mother would never shorten it though. I was Christine until the day she died. Still am to all my aunts and uncles. Don't know why, I just don't like the full name.

My kids are Spencer and Sarah. Spencer was chosen just because I loved the name, but this is another one of those names where it's nearly impossible to find anything with his name on it. The most it can be shortened to is Spence, which is okay too. Sarah is a family name on both sides of the family. Actually, the name on my side is Serafina, so we Americanized it. I have absolutely no regrets naming them as we did.
I like my name just fine. :)

I love what I named my 2 boys too!
My oldest is named Pike (incidently he is a pisces) and my youngest is named Vincent.

I hope they like them as much as I do.

The only thing I don't want Vincent called is Vinny... I don't like that.
My daughters initials are H.R.H
My Mom calls her "Her Royal Highness" lol That totally fits her too.
My son is Ryan Todd.... His Dad's name is Todd. I always wanted to name a boy Ryan Michael.... but I lost out.

Hayley & I go to a Mommy & me class where there is a baby named Woody. It is not short for Woodrow... Just Woody. The worst part are his initials are WWW. lol

Why would parents do that? It's just wrong!!!
Okay, I was named after a Barry Manilow song. How much worse can you get?

We met a couple on New Year's Eve who named their poor child after my husband's band because they like their music so much. My husband's band is Big Tubba Mista and they named the kid Tubby. Nice tribute to the guys.
(He's so gonna get his butt kicked on the playground!)

You asked how much worse it can get......
Mandy was written by Barry about his DOG! 8O
Yeah, my mother still doesn't believe that one. I think she needs to seek some counseling about her denial problem!!!
Don't feel to bad, my Brother named me after a cocker spaniel.
My mom went against the grain and didn't name me after dead Jewish relatives. She just liked my first name "Stacy" and got my middle name "Leigh" from an actress Leigh Taylor Young. My dad used to call me by my initials SLP (Slip). Not that I'm married I'm SLM (Slim). It's okay as long as I stay that way! :D

Lol. Holly was the other name my mom wanted to name me-- Christmas or not. It didn't win because of the alliteration with my last name. She loved Vanessa, but it was too long. I was going to definitely be Lisa until the day before I was born and my dad's mom threw a fit because their dog's name was Lisa.

However...my initials spell out ASP. This is fine now, but if I ever marry I can't marry someone with the last name starting with S...or my initials will be A-S-S. 8O

One of my sisters was named Peggy, not Margaret, just Peggy. Her teachers used to tell her it was a shame she didn't know her real name  Wonder what the thought process was for turning Margaret into Peggy anyway

Yeah gads! Be careful in selecting koumbaros! I was fortunate my aunt announced she was naming her unborn (if a girl) after her mother before I received my name. Otherwise I could have easily been a Vassiliki.

I am not sure how they got Peggy out of Margaret either. It makes no sense... There is no "P" in Margaret.

Wow :cow: Good thing your Aunt had a girl :D
Zachary is fast becoming "Zacky" and even though we like Zach, we really liked the full name. Oh well. Josh, Andi, Zach...hmm....Pooh, and CHris, oh well, there goes that pattern.
My great nephew Zackary is going to be 1 yr old next week. My MIL calls him Zacky. We call him Zacky Farms... It is a poulty company...like Tyson
My Husband has been calling him that since he was born. It just kinda stuck... lol
We thought we were playing it safe picking Madelyn...and assumed people would just know it is pronounced and spelled...Mad..a..lynn....NOT Mad..a..LINE.

If I wanted Madeline I'd spell it that way....drives me nuts. One thing we did acomplish is noone calls her Maddie.

My cousin has a friend they named their new son...Kavin...I believe they pronounce it Calve...in...as a farming background I immediately said why would they be calving...poor kid is gonna have a tough road. He will also forever be called Gavin...and he will be correcting people.

Daisie aka Beverly...and I like my name.
Here is the worst by far....I went to high school with a girl whose first name was Tru..middle name Lee...last name Love....yup thats right tru lee love....sigh...some parents just are over the top!
GROAN.................. The only thing that would have made it better is if she married Joe Dumb making her TRu Lee DUMB!!!!! :yay:
I have been reading all the posts and have to laugh. You folks haven't seen funny names until you come down to Louisiana.

My name depending on which side of I-10 you are on is either pronounced Y Net or One Net. My middle name is pronounced Dee Lin Da. I now answer to Wynonna, Tammy (as in Tammy Wynette), Whynot, etc... Plus since I was always the tallest in class my absolute favorite nickname of all  was Big Red (red hair). I have 2 sisters and 2 brothers - all whose names boggle the imagination.

My pour husband who is an only child (and British) had a mom who was a fan of Frederico Fellini. My husband's real name is Felin. As in "he is a wanted Felon". :excited: Needless to say we call him Joe.

After my traumatic childhood name calling I named my two boys very simple names: Scott Anthony and Jamie Ryan.

And I checked - nobody's initials spells anything. :phew:
OK here are two very BAD ones.
My husband went to school with two brothers. Orangejello (pronouced Or-annjello and his brother Lemonajello (pronounced Le-manjello)
Needless to say the mother loved Jello
rotflmao 8O
Groan........

My mother worked in a newborn nursery and would come home laughing at some of the names. The only one I remember is a baby girl named Vagina.

susan/sheepieboss
Use to know these boys in school who were brothers.

One was named Raymond Gay (Ray Gay) and the other was Benjamen Gay (Ben Gay)....:)
My Mom is a principal and at one point she had a little girl who's first name was Blue, Middle - Jean and her last name was Rottencrotch.
Blue Jean rottencrotch. I thought it was a typo when I first saw it.
LMAO Are you guys kidding???

On the topic of last names, I have a very funny story. About 8 years ago I went to the hospital to get some abdominal/intestinal xrays. I was in the xray room and the gastroenterology radiologist came to introduce himself as Dr. Gasparitis. I just about died and asked him to repeat his name as I wasn't sure I heard him right. I DID! :D

That's just not right at all!!!

My grandmother worked with a woman who named her daughter Female.
Pronounced like Emily with an "F" in front.
She told everyone that the nurses at the hospital had that listed as her name and she liked it. So she kept it

That is exactly what we did when choosing our boys names. I don't care for nicknames much, we have a Matthew & Andrew in our family and that is what we call them..............

We picked Micah :hearts: cuz we love it, nothing to shorten it to (although some people will call him Michael and it drives me CRAZY), it is Biblical, which means alot to us (all the kids in my family are Biblical) and there isn't much that other kids can make fun of. Then there was Joshua :hearts: , I don't mind it being shortend to Josh, I love his name (have since I was a kid), again, Biblical, and nothing to really make fun of.

I wanted Micah to be a Sully, then Monsters Inc came out, good thing we didn't otherwise, Micah would have been associated with a big, blue, hairy, monster! 8O
Stacy wrote:

I am not kidding. The names I mentioned are real names. Crazy as they may be.

I was talking to my niece while she was pregnant and told her you've also got to think about nicknames that the school kids will come up with and to stay away from names that rhyme to easily with bad words.
My Nephew looked at me and said he went to school with a girl and her name rhymed with no other word in the English Language. Her name was Orange. I wonder if she was any relation to Orangejello and Lemonjello?
I don't mind my boys shortened names. I actually mostly call Jakob, Jake. It's easier to find personalized stuff for Jake too. ;) Brandon really can't be shortened.

Their initals are okay too - JDC and BMC.

Their worst part is going to be our last name. It's VERY close to Christ (one letter difference) and everyone misspells it as that all the time. It actually used to be Christ long ago, but it got changed because the family was being made fun of. Kinda interesting reading the family tree. The last name has been through 3-4 different versions - lol I couldn't imaging changing the last name of an entire family...
Okay, well my Mom was an Officer Manager at a Pediatric Office, she waould call me and say, you'll never believe this name.....????? Well, the one that I will never ever forget is................Rumpshaker................oh poor little girl!
Are you sure that isn't a sheepdog she named, and not a child????
LMAO.... Karen, That would make a great Sheepie name!
