My dog was Skunked!

I thought I would bring up this topic and share an awful skunk story.

I had just had knee surgery and my house had 14 steps up the bedroom, which was not going to work...because I had Ryan who was a year and half old at the time.
So me, my husband, Ryan and Roxie (our Boxer) stayed at my parents house in my old bedroom. It was a Split Level so I only had to walk up 6 stairs to the bedroom. A futon had replaced the bed I had and I was in pain and having lots of trouble sleeping.

I was downstairs the one night playing Solitaire on the computer.
Roxie came down stairs so I let her out. About a minute of letting her out I heard an awful noise in the backyard. I walked to the sliding glass door and there is Roxie looking at me with Blood pouring out of her mouth. 8O I though she had been attacked by something. I opened the slider to the most awful smell I had ever smelled. The skunk must have sprayed her and in retaliation she bit the skunk, and I believe he sprayed her again. The blood was the skunks. I quickly shut the door after smelling what I smelled.... Too late though. I was literally blinded by the smell.

Also Mom and Dad quickly woke up and Mom came out to find out what was going on. When she opened her bedroom door which adjoined the Great Room she almost passed out. She yelled at me to close the door and I told her I had. That it was only open for like 5 seconds. Mom helped me search for Tomato Juice. There was none in the house. So now I had to get back upstairs to get dressed to go out to the store. I woke my husband up to tell him what happened to HIS dog and his reaction was. "You shouldn't have let her out"

So off to the store... The trip took me forever to make on crutches. To the car, to the store, back to the car. I get home about an hour after I had left. Hobble to the backyard and start washing her down.
By 4 am I was officially calling it a night. She still smelled but I was in BAD shape.
The next morning my husband blamed it on me again. Like I put the skunk there. Mom & Dad didn't blame it on me. Everytime their dog Baxter got skunked I was the one who took care of him. Mom was mad at my husband for not helping me. I was mad at everyone because nobody offered help.

I can't believe nobody helped you. 8O Thats an awful story. I would've helped ya. I never had any of my dogs sprayed by a skunk luckily. My brothers dog got sprayed and my mom wouldn't let him bring his dog in the house until the smell went away. He slept in the garage with the dog lol. His dog was a boxer too. I bet they felt bad in the morning they didn't help you and if they didn't they should have.
I forgot to add that my husband I was talking about is now my EX! Just one of a million reasons why. lol
The day after this knee surgery my Dad was supposed to stay home from work and take care of Ryan and me. I was on some really heavy meds.... Well Dad HAD to work.... so did my Ex. So here I was fresh out of surgery on crutches trying to take care of my baby and dog.
I would move my son room to room in a stroller. I would push it a few feet, hobble up to it and do it again. What a nightmare!
So much for family!
Glad you had the scents to drop him like the stinker he was. 8)
ROTFLMAO! Very good one Ron! :clappurple:
What a jerk.

Just in case this happens again, forgo the tomato juice and use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Much better and you can keep it on hand, just don't open the peroxide until needed.

Skunk is one scent that makes me want to.......puke. My mother finds is plesant.....in small doses. go figure
We don't have smelly skunks here YAY

DITTO

What a "stinky" story!!!!
EEWWWW Flash got skunked once, the tomato juice made me gag. Right after that he tried to play with a porcupine and lost :(
My first response was "Are you still married to him?"

Then I read the rest! Hope you realized what a lemon he was before too long :P
Never found the tomato juice to be that great - probably better than nothing, but it certainly didn't kill the smell.

Have heard that white vinegar is better than tomato juice. Fortunately haven't had to try it out. Had never heard of the peroxide and baking soda, I'll try to remember that one as well in case it's ever needed.
I just wanted to add that a perfect formula for skunk stink removal is:

1 16 oz. bottle of peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
2-3 teaspoons of antibacterial soap

Mix well and apply on well washed dog in the area of the stench. Usually the face, under the chin and neck. Take great care not to get into the dogs eyes. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. We use this in the salon all the time and it works the best of any remedy! (Use a squirt bottle, like a dish soap type to apply the mixture)

Blue Star's Mom
I have honestly never seen a skunk here in the Desert in the 2 years we have lived here. I don't think they live here.

That night that Roxie got skunked someone told me that O.J. also works.
For a dog that had such a short coat.... It took forever to get the smell out. She smelled like skunk mixed with O.J and Tomato Juice. EWWW!!

Talk about a nasty combination!!!

I want to hear everyone's skunk stories...
Thanks for finishing my post. I couldn't remember if it was 1/2 or 1/4 cup baking soda. I'm usually nearly blue from holding my breath so I don't measure anyway and the soap just happens.

This is a very drying mixture for the coat so condition afterward.
