Classes 12 hours a week? A test? A New York State Skills Exam? What else does it take to become an EMT in New York, and how much does it cost? (If you know what it takes in other states, please start a new thread about it!) |

I think it's mandatory to be HOT... |
Missed this Ron!!!!
Actually it doesn't cost anything, if you have a Fire Department to sponser you. The cost of the course is somewhere near $3,000 BUT even the fire departments don't pay that, it is subsidized by the State. Books and equipment cost around $115.00. I thook it through the local county EMS, the class is also given at Cornell University, a local Community College and at the Fire Aademy in Montour Falls. So there are a variety of ways you can take the class. In addition to class time you have to do some clinical, either hospital time or "run time" on a squad. Even me, who has worked in a hospital for 20 years had to do 12 hours clinical in the ER. I also did 10 "mentored" squad runs. The class time is the biggie...... We started Jan 2 and this coming Monday is our last class with the written exam on Thursday. Class is every Mon and Wed for 4 hours and every other Sat for 8 hours. I spent alot of extra time studying because that's the kind of person I am, I know some of the students didn't study alot and will most likely pass. I guess it depends on whether your type A or Type Z.......... I'm not sure it was any easier for me being a nurse than for anyone else...... there are alot of thigns that are done "pre hospital" that go completely against my training as an RN and the situations are totally different. It did help that I already knew what the big word ment and that I am already comfortable dealing with patients. But many students in the class are Firemen and I think they were at as much of an advantage as I am because they already understood all the "emergency stuff". All in all I enjoyed the course, but I'll enjoy it alot more when the exam is over and I know I've PASSED!!!! |
