What do you guys use to trim? I want to see her eyes! Allie is only 9 weeks (This weds) and already it is growing over!

what an adorable picture. i'm glad you added one!

Ideally, I use human hair scissors which are smaller but sharper than ...let's say what your kid takes to school or for crafts.

To me, the more experience you have doing it... you just may be someone who gets lazy and grabs a big pair of scissors just to clip a few strands. It's a lot harder to maneuver around though. ...not that I'm guilty of being lazy and doing the above.
You might feel safer with a set of thinning shears. They're usually rounded on one side with a comb on the other. They only clip off small amounts so you don't end up taking out huge chunks.

If you need some help, I'm only about 20 minutes away from you and I'd be glad to help in any way that I can. I could even show you my stuff so you could get an idea of what you might like to use for grooming. Clyde has more grooming tools than I do!

I just trimmed Fozzie's hair that was in front of his eyes. I used one of those small silver scissors witha rounded tip. You should be able to get them at any pharmacy type store. I just trimmed yesterday while he was taking a nap. I had tried while he was awake and he would not take any part in it.
Thanks guys! I tried with small silver scissors, while she was napping.....Of course 1st snip she woke up!

Jill, I will take you up on your offer this summer! Would like to get together so you can give me some tips! I figure I will learn as much as I can, maybe spring for a groomer every spring?

Right now I just want to get thru the sleeping in the crate at night, and the potty training! Seems like it was going good, but she sure does pee alot! Outside and inside! Hey, Maybe i can drop her t your house for a couple of weeks  !
One of the big things with grooming is teaching them to stand or lay still. Seems like a ridiculous goal with a puppy, I know!!
Also, teach them to allow you to hold onto their legs and head. To really be able to trim around the eyes you should have a pretty stable grip on their snout so that you have control over them. Even if they're laying down they could sneeze or flinch and then yikes!
When I trim around the eyes on my mom's Bichon it's easiest to have him standing, hold his muzzle with my left hand, scissors in the right and rest the side of my hand on his head while trimming. By resting your hand on his head you aren't having to steady your arm and hand while doing that kind of close quarters work.
Good luck and go slow!

Lol. No thanks! Clyde was the worst dog to housetrain that I've ever had but, ironically, now that he's 1 1/2, he's the best I've ever had. That dog has a bladder that will hold forever. If you would've told me 1 year ago that he'd be like that now, I'd say no way. But, needless to say, I'm done with the crate and all that business. If I can get out of ever having to use a crate again in my life, I'll be thrilled. Some dogs to great with them but he didn't!

Summer will be good anyway because Clyde will have more hair to demonstrate stuff with. And Allie will have all her shots, be a little bigger and will be able to play!
I groom my puppy on top of her crate at the suggestion of my trainer. More control she cannot take off. Perhaps get her used to a few brushings on something off the ground then battle the scissors next when she is comfortable.

what a good idea for a puppy!
