Keeping The Babies Healthy

I wanted to bring up to the New Parents to be very careful with exposing the Babies until they have had their series of 3 shots. My main concern is Parvo. It is a virus and does not respond to antibotics. When you take your Babies to the Vet carry them and DO NOT let them get on the floor. Some dog could have been through the waiting room or exam room with parvo. If the Vet did not sanitize completely , the Baby could be exposed to it. Don't let them around other dogs unless you know for sure that the other dog is up to date on its shots. Don't go to dog parks. Don't take them out walking. The virus can be brought in on someones shoes. When I had Babies I always made people take their shoes off when they came in the house. The get natural imminity from their Momma then they get 3 set of shots. They are not completely immune until they have had that 3rd shot........ Then you can go rock and roll. The other diseases don't bother me near as bad they are bacterial and they all respond to antibotics. More later...Sheepie Hugs, Kaye

Thanks for the info- You've been great!!! :D Any other adivce- Keep it rolling!!! I'm sure we all can use as much advice as possible. Has the puppies had any of their shots yet? Sorry, I can't remember since I talked to you on the phone. When I set up Julies first vet appt. is there anything I specifically need to let them know specifically?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!      :) :) :) :D :D :D :D :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
HI All New Parents
Kaye has asked me to share some information about new babies :hearts:
So I have chosen to share the following notes I have saved from Kaye.
Not only is it darn GOOD info on the importance of starting these loves out on the right track
BUT it shows Kaye's knowledge of & passion for these sheepies!

Just can't be more excited for y'all & these lucky babies :excited:
Diane...hoping this helps you as much as they have with my sweet Beebles

These are some of my personal favorites :)
**********************************************
I am feeding Wellness puppy food.......
To that I add cooked chicken, hamburger, ground turkey, chopped roast and beef heart......
You can put yogurt, buttermilk and cottage cheese with the food also
I steam broccoli, green beans, cabbage, kale, carrots, everything but onions and grapes.......I give them raw pork neck bones, beef ribs, beef short ribs, chicken wings........I give them raw carrots, green beans, loose leaf lettuce, apples, broccoli ............I bake sliced liver and give that to them as a treat......Not very much it is very rich.....
Not table food.......... Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
*************************************************************
The choices that I made were made after years of research......It is a decision that I made.....I don't expect all of you Parents to do everything that I do......Although I think giving the Babies more then just dry dog food is not asking to much......Sure, the Babies live a healthy happy life on just dry dog food........Who Knows......But, why not try and do more????? If nothing else give them some variety....Add some yogurt, cottage cheese or buttermilk to the dry food....Missing Link or B-Naturals immune blend has a meaty taste to it.....Add that with water and mix with the dry food......When you cook chicken or beef add that to the Babies food.....Buy some bones at the grocery store and give them the bones raw......It certainly will not hurt them and will give them natural calcium for the bones and joints...Give them baby carrots, apples, green beans, loose leaf lettuce and broccoli raw to nibble on......Vitamins in their natural form.....Every Baby is different in what they like and don't like.......
I give Vitamin C { Ester C }, Salmon Oil, Vitamin E , Immune Blend daily ..........I give cranberry { dried or capsules } at least every other day.......I give the Little Babies yogurt daily....The Big Babies get yogurt, goats milk and raw honey at least 3 times a week.......
I don't know that all of this necessary......It works for me....
None of My Big Babies { with the exception of Rosie } have had any problems at all in over 2 years......
So I think the proof is in the pudding........Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
*************************************************************
Anything that you put on your skin is absorbed thru the pores and goes into the blood system.....It works the same way for the Babies.....So why put strong chemicals on them that could hurt their kidneys and liver???????.....If it says on the instructions for me to wear gloves because it could hurt me IT COULD HURT THE BABIES........The essential oils used in this shampoo that you make at home cost to start with but will last a long time....There are other home sage products to make with them also.... Flea Shampoo: Johnson's Baby Shampoo, large size......10 drops each: thyme oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil and tea tree oil.......This works great and the Baby will smell great......................................................Homemade Flea Spray: 1 cup Avon Skin So Soft, 1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil, 2 cups apple cider vinegar and 2 cups water........Mix well and apply from a spray bottle {covering eyes}....For ticks: decrease water by 1 cup....... Flea Collar: Take an old cloth collar and soak it in :1 teaspoon thyme oil, 1 teaspoon lavender oil, 1 teaspoon eucalyptus oil, 1 teaspoon cedar tree oil.......It will last a month or so and redo it...Will not hurt the Babies Inside Flea Powder: Combine Borax cleaning powder with table salt.{ 8 to 1} Sprinkle throughout the house. Sweep it lightly, leave for a couple of days then vacuum..This acts as a desiccant, dehydrating the fleas and their larva...You can use just straight table salt and vacuum the next day.. I use Diatomaceous Earth { found at your nursery } with 1/2 cup of boric acid { pharmacy } Sprinkle let set for 4 hours and vacuum... I also use Diatomaceous Earth outside for Bad Bugs...... I BELIEVE IN CLOROX BLEACH.......I mix Clorox Bleach with water half and half and spray it......It will KILL Parvo, Coccedia and Giardia, E-coli, Salmonella ..........It will not kill your grass........I spray it in the chicken pens and clean all the dogs water bowls and feeding dishes with it......I even clean my carpet with it in the steam cleaner......I need to do a Clorox commercial.....

When I would call Baby Baby Baby to the Little Buggers.......They would run to me like a HERD OF TURTLES......What is a Bunch Of Turtles called????????Turtles Don't Run!!!!!!!!! When they came to me I would hold both sides of their head and Love Them and Kiss them.......Who wouldn't run to get hugged and kissed????I will do a video of my saying Baby Baby Baby for them.......Even the Bigger Babies I have Out There still respond to My Voice.........Melts My Heart.....Sheepie Hugs, Kaye

If time permits, maybe Kaye can do a video of her calling your miracle babies to her...Baby, Baby Baby
I am headed for the hospital.THey had to tube him because he wouldn't eat or drink... They are tranferring Fletcher back to the Psych Unit this afternoon... Tomorrow morning the Brain Injury Facility north of Dallas will be there to transport him to their Facility. TL is taking the Babies for the Vet visit this afternoon for me. I fly them out Saturday morning out of DFW. So after tomorrow morning I will post more about taking care of the Babies....... Thank You Dear Diane for posting those notes...... Sheepie Hugs, Kaye

Kaye- good luck this morning and hope the babies do well at the Vet this afternoon. Looking forward to updates after their appointment.

Kisses to all of them!

Lark (Ambrose's Mommy to Be)
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU NEW FAMILIES RECEIVING THE MIRACLE BABIES! I'M SO EXCITED FOR ALL OF YOU- AND CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ALL ABOUT THEM :) OH AND HOW MUCH SLEEP YOU DON'T GET THAT FIRST NIGHT!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA  MISERY LOVES COMPANY
I certainly do not agree with Kaye on "I give them raw pork neck bones, beef ribs, beef short ribs, chicken wings". I will never give any animal any bone from pork or chicken. The bones splinter and can get stuck in their throats. I have a friend that lost his dog because of a chicken bone. I'm pretty sure Science Diet has a good dog food.
Best wishes to all the families getting one of the miracle babies. So exciting and can't wait to hear how you all go with your new family additions. Pictures too, please, when they get home
Shady, Cooked bones splinter...Raw bones do not splinter. I used to feed 100% raw an did it for years and never had 1 problem. I have fed raw for 6 years with no problems. Now with rescue I can't afford to feed all raw. I feed about 50% raw to the rescues. I also feed rasw fruits and veggies. . I am a vegaterian so it was a real hard decision to make. IT is a choice I made .....I don't expect all people to agree.... But, That is good.. Agree to Disagree!!! I fed Science Diet for 12 year until I found what was in it. Wheat and Corn are in the first 5 ingredients. Cheap fillers. What is Chicken Meal? IT is marketed to Vet becasue there is a higher profit margian......There are much better dry food on the market. . Of course this is just My Opinion. Kaye
Kaye,
What are the better dry dog foods?
Ingredients
Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Brewers Rice, Fish Oil, Flaxseed, Soybean Oil, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, vitamins (L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.
hmmmmm By-products.... ggghghghghghghghgh Image
Kaye-- how did the babies do at the vet today?

Just wondering...

Hope you are all doing well!

Kisses to all the doggies out there!

Thanks!!!
Shady,
You will want a good food with a Meat as the first ingredient.
The one you mentioned was full of fillers. The food I use has no fillers.
I use Authority Lamb & Rice from Petsmart or Authority's Chicken and Rice.
I would never use a food with corn as the first ingredient...A lot of dogs are allergic to corn.
I have also fed Kirkland's Super Premium Lamb and Rice....but they have veggies in that and it gives Pepsi gas.
Authority also makes a puppy formula.
Wow.... so much info to take in!!! What great information. I greatly appreciate everything this forum has done for our family in preparing for our puppy to come home. Diane- thanks sooooo much for helping Kaye out and taking the time to write all of this! :D Kaye- thanks for keeping us updated! I told my husband the other day I feel like the forum is becoming part of my everyday life. If I don't check the info updates I go through withdraw! I someday would love to meet all of ya'll. It seems like this forum is very welcoming and a great big family of friends :)
The forum has been a wealth of information and will be first stop if I have any questions- but seems like every nook and cranny are covered!! Thanks to all of you for your excitement and support - makes the "adoption" even more exciting to get so much energy from all of you!

Kaye, THANK YOU for being such a wonderful caring Mom to all of our babies- YOU ROCK!!!
Thanks Pepsi's Mommy :)
The breeder told us he had the puppies on Science Diet until they are 16 weeks old. So we'll check out the Authority brand next time we're at Pet's Mart. We take them to the vet on Saturday for another set of shots and maybe the microchipping and we'll ask the vet also about natural foods for them. Mike got us a new SUV for the pups. He plans ahead..lol. The cat is being very tolerable lately. Not so much hissing.
Randi
Randi,
If you want to save some money, Animal Samartians on Ramon does the microchipping for $25. Most Vets charge $50.
I also take my dogs there for their shots.
I do take the dogs for annual vet visits to get checked out.
But Animal Samaritians is so much cheaper as far as shots too.

I also feed raw bones at least three times a month. Keeps their teeth in great condition.
OHMYGOD I am so out of the dog loop here! I'll check out Animal Samaratins for an appt.
Thanks !!
Randi,
You don't need an appt for shots or microchipping at Animal Samaritans.
Their hours for shots are as follows...
Walk In, No Appointment Needed
Mon-Fri 9:30am to Noon & 1:30 to 3:30pm
They also do spaying and neutering for a flat rate of $50 per dog.
Here is their website... http://www.animalsamaritans.org/clinic.htm
Joan and I took Mulligan to a microchipping clinic offered at our local pet shop. It was done by a local vet with all of the proceeds going to a local shelter.

The cost was $12 in advance, $15 if you registered at the door.
Until we get our baby, Chipper (Franc).....

I think I am more prepared for him that I was my first son!!! The anticipation of puppy kisses is overwhelming...

Kaye, thanks for all the love and care you are giving these babies, as well as all the other dogs you have out there... and little Emily... how lucky she is you are keeping her!!!

:yay:

.

Sorry, but a vet is not a dietician, or a nutricionist. They take a 45 minute cource on food in all their years of schooling. My vet always says she can only recommend the prescription vet food, and to go with the big name brands, becasue they are the most well-known. NOT necessarily a good thing. She is totally out of the loop for the more modern ones, and doesn't even know Nutro 8O But she is a great vet, and I love her.

So I guess what I am suggesting is do your research. On the internet there are tons of sites with lists of food comparisans from best to worst. Find an independent study or two and make a decision.
We all survived the first vet check. Mom came over to help with the pups. Mike was working but stopped in the vet's office and paid some money, then left. The pups are pooped out and sleeping. Where is a good place to get a puppy crate or something that folds up for them?
Petsmart has a large selection of crates.

We'd love to pictures of your puppies Randi.
Rags & Pepsi can't wait to meet them.
We got the XL wire crate at PetsMart. I figure we can train them in the same cage for a while. It's still in the dining room in the box for right now..lol.
I would love you to meet the puppies but I would like to wait for all the puppy shots before they meet other dogs. I'm sure yours are fine, I'm just a lil paranoid. I had a sheepy that had parvo, she lived but it was horrible for her.
I'll try and post more pics :)
We are very excited to meet the pups! :excited:
How about over Memorial Weekend? I'm off for 3 days! YAY!!
Sure :excited: I am going to get a puppy fix!! :yay:
