My nine week old puppy pees out of spite!

My Sheepie is only 9 weeks old, but already knows where to pee.(puppy pads and outside) If I won't let him do something or verbally punish him he will go to the middle of the room and look at me and pee. Then I punish him and he will do it again and again, otherwise he is a good dog....any suggestions?!? Also he pees little bits every 15 minutes or so, how can I make him hold it longer??

Thanks, Ryan

He might be peeing because he's scared, confused or upset, especially if he's just been reprimanded for doing something. Perhaps try using positive methods and see if that helps that situation, like if he's chewing something he shouldn't, just a calm, firm no, take what he isn't chewing out of his mouth and replace it with something he can chew. Even if he has an accident in the house, don't get upset, just try to stop him while he's doing it, then calmly take him outside, give him his potty command and act as if everything's normal.

Puppies' bladders are only developed enough to hold it roughly around their age in months, plus one, so right now, the best you can hope for is around 2 1/2-3 hours. If he's engaged in heavy play and drinking water, at that age peeing every 15 minutes is normal. You just have to give it time!
Good advise, ButtersStotch!

Also, please know that at this age, they have no control over their bladders and cannot "feel" when they need to go pee. They don't know until it's coming out. :) It's as much a surprise to him as it is to you! :D

Please be patient with him. Punishing him at this age will only make him frightened of you. He really doesn't "get it". Think of him as an infant (which right now, he is). :)

When my boy was little (last year), I literally had to take him out 5-6 times an hour some days and we still had accidents. It will get better. Just takes time. :)

Especially with sheepies, you will get much further with him using positive training methods. If he has an accident, just pick him up and take him outside to "finish" the job. Then praise him when he pees or poops. Give him a treat and pet him, tell him what a good boy he is.

Good luck! Please consider registering and becoming a member here. You'll find lots of good advise from years & years of sheepie experience :D and friendly people who will love to share with you and hear about your sweet boy! :D
He is really way too young to be completely housetrained yet.

Puppies still can have an occasional accident at 6 months too.

Just keep praising when he does go potty outside and the accidents will become fewer & fewer.

Oh, my. This is a baby you are dealing with. Like yelling at a 4 month old human for peeing in the bathtub.

One thing you do NOT want to do is have your puppy afraid to pee in front of you. If he gets like this he will continue to go in the house, only in secret. So you will not be able to see him do it outside and reward him. When he has an accident you need to blame yourself for not watching and reading the signals. Right now he has no clue what you want.

Go to the "House-training " thread under Guidelines and there may be something you can use to understand what is happening and how to get through it.

And puppies or dogs, for that matter, do not do anything "for spite". This is somethign that us humans have put a name to any behavior that we don't like our dog to do, yet we think they do it anyway, on purpose. Dogs do noto think in this way at all.

Your puppy may also be submisively urinating. It is his way of appologising for getting you upset. He doesn't know why you are upset, but submissive urination is a way that a dog tries to appease. It means that he is trying to show you that he is a little worm and you are the boss. By scaring him he tries to show you again, and he does it again...it is how he communicates to you and he cannot help it.

Good luck!
Ryan- my puppy Pippin is now 11 weeks old, and we're JUST now getting to the point where we have bathroom breaks occurring more often OUTSIDE the house then INSIDE. Potty training takes time, and while it is kinda yucky to clean up the messes that occur daily, it is all part of having a new puppy. He will learn, and it will get better, but remember to treat all appropriate potties with lots of warm praise, and all accidents with diffidence- it is gonna happen, often! There are several long time members of the forum with brand new puppies, so feel free to become a member and share your little guy with us... now is a great time to join the OES.org new puppy support group! You can blow off steam when you've gotten your pant leg grabbed for the 50 bazzilionth time!

(Note that there is no "official" new puppy support group, but I think the Stacy and I are the first unofficial, official members :) )
It takes time and your pup is so young. He really doesn't understand that he needs to go potty or where to do it. Fozzie is only about 9 1/2 wks and does have accidents in the house. I may have a little bit of a head start because of our adult OES who knows the rules about potty outside. and one moment I think he gets it and the next time he forgets. It's all about repetition. You really need to watch your new pup. He/She will give you signs that he/she needs to go potty, for example sniffing the floor in circles, pacing. When you catch your pup in the act, it is recommended to CALMLY pick him up and carry him to the appropriate potty spot and say "potty" or another word you've selected . This means you may get squirted a little, but you must do it. Don't sound angry or reprimand him. When he does go in the correct location, then you make a HUGE fuss and act like this is the best thing in the world. He will be happy to see you happy. The last few weeks have been some of the most trying in my life. I'm tired and my back hurts, but this must be done so your pup understands what is and isn't appropriate in your house. REMEMBER STAY POSITIVE WITH HIM!
I agree with all that has been posted already, postive reinforcement, consistence, persistence, patience, an eye like a hawk, and shoes on all day are a few things required to housetrain a puppy.
If you can't watch the pup all the time, I would suggest crate training for when you are sleeping, not home, or busy.
