Looking for a puppy or a reputable OES breeder? Read this!

Hello and welcome to the forum! :D
This is a great first stop in your quest for an OES puppy!

Here at oes.org you will learn "Everything about Old English Sheepdogs," and what it takes to be an owner of a Bobtail. Please ask lots of questions. We're here to help you in your decision!

The OES is a great dog, but its profuse coat (lots and lots of fur!) adds a whole lot to the time required for dog care to your busy day. Every inch of hair that your dog has will require approximately 1 extra hour per week just for brushing. A dog in a full, show quality coat has about 12 inches of hair. Let me repeat and emphasize that: If you want to keep your OES in a full, show quality coat you are committing to around 10 or 12 hours per week of brushing.

A healthy dog starts with good genetics. A responsible breeder will only breed dogs with good temperaments, and only after running several very expensive health checks on both parents. The extra time that you spend in researching and selecting your breeder, and the extra money that you spend for a puppy from a breeder who has done his or her best to produce very healthy puppies should be a very good investment for you. It also is good for the breed as a whole to support responsible breeding. You will have a lifelong relationship with your responsible breeder; it's likely that you won't even know your breeder if you buy a puppy-mill dog from the local pet store.

Just in case you're wondering, I'm not a breeder. My wife Joan and I have owned two OES, both from a rescue organization, the first was back in 1992. I have no financial interest in any breeder or breeding program, method or approach. The reason for this advice is that I've heard and read too many horror stories, lots of them on this forum, from people who have purchased puppies from less-than-responsible breeders.

Your second stop is Tarja T. Koistila. She is a member here at the forum and is the chairperson of the Breeder Referral program Old English Sheepdog Club of America (OESCA). She will be able to refer you to a breeder in your area who has, at a minimum, signed the OESCA Code of Ethics. I am sure she will be happy to assist you!! You will STILL need to do your homework and ask lots of questions of those breeders.

If you are a member of the forum, you can contact Tarja through the forum, one of two ways:

Through email here at the forum:
http://forum.oes.org/profile.php?mode=email&u=498

Or through a Private Message (PM) here at the forum:
http://forum.oes.org/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=498

Or you can go directly to the OESCA Breeder Referral pages at:

Good luck in your quest for the best and healthiest dog !

Just a quick note; I've received notification that Tarja doesn't have internet service until June 6th or 7th, so she can't answer breeder referral requests until after then.
