No Biggie to others BUT....

Yeah!!! I managed to put drops in Panda's ears!!!!!!!!!!It has taken no less than Seven Hundred and Thirty-Eight Days to be able to do this!

This is HUGE!!!! Since he arrived at my home two years ago ..he had a massive ear infection which has taken numerous trips to the vet for full sedation to clean them out. I get him shaved down at the same time. Since he's sedated he also gets the "works"...teeth checked, hips rotated, nails cut..ect..We've done this three times at the cost of 500 each time, that's not including all the other vet trips.

One time we attempted to just muzzle him in hopes we can do it...this involved myself, the vet and the assistant...Nope...couldn't hold him even with all three of us... He bucked and cried so much the vet had no choice but to sedate him as he was so stressed. He doesn't mind the muzzle but EARS are his biggest issue. Some of you may remember it took me almost a year before I could even touch them as he arrived with that horrible infection and hematoma to his ears. Poor boy he must have gone through so much pain for years.

Every day took me one step closer...just a quick touch and lots of pats, then he allowed me after months to flip the ears up, another year..could rub the inside of his ears...today the drops!! Yeah! Two years and 8 days but I'm of the mindset...I can outlast you and have lots of patience! Ha Ha

A day of celebration!!! :go:

Congrats! Congrats! What a great accomplishment!

I always try to make it a special time, calms, quiet, treats etc. lots of gentle head rubs. Of cource with Panda, it is an entirely different story, given his history. What a great guy he is, and shows how much he really trusts you.

Bosley's hates his ears being handled, but Dixie just lays her head sideways on my lap and let me drop away... :)
That is wonderful!!!! Panda girl just wants to remind Panda boy that ear rubs are the best!! Its the feet that you have to stay away from 8O

Marianne, I've been meaning to ask you....
Do you think Panda understands english yet? And also, does he respond to his name? He was Robin before right? Which sounds nothing like Panda.... so I'm curious as to how he has adjusted to that.
I've seriously been thinking of changing my Panda's call name.... but I just don't know....
Hi Willowsprite,

Just saw your post and logged on.

I hadn't even grasped that he wouldn't be able to understand English until Ron mentioned it before he arrived at my house. I asked the question before he arrived and found out Panda was bi- lingual actually tri if you count dog. :O) Many people in HK speak English and Chinese so Panda must have heard both languages? Somewhere in his background I think someone at one point must have done obedience with him too as the first time I said "Sit" (in English of course) he did, much to my suprise.

The strangest thing about Panda unlike any other dog I've ever had...is he came the very first time I called him. I could say Hey You and he would come racing. (I originally had him on those long 25 ft leashes) but never had to tug at it as he would come on his own. I actually experimented and called him several different names and he still came. Try it with your Panda girl as I suspect it's the friendly tone of our voices and a little knee slapping that does it....a treat helps too. I should also mention I changed Paris , my grey kitty's name three times ...he was Baby....then Hickey (little monster sucked on my neck one night - ha) he had that name for a couple months then I changed it to Paris but often call him Grey Baby and he comes to that.

Panda suprises me the most considering his background and the fact that I never have had him in obedience but he knows many of the terms in English..even in the middle of lots and lots of dogs at the dog park...he comes over immediately even if he was in the midst of playing. (Merlin would need to be called often or would ignore me.) :?

Panda never has to be called more than once and runs full speed and immediately sits infront of me and looks up. Unbelievable! I know I'm always chatting more about Panda than my other two but in all the years I've had dogs I've never had one that is so willing to please and listen as well as Panda.

I can do the long down stay with him...turn my back and walk away and he remains in the down position until I tell him to come. He's even learned to understand what "Wait" means...should he ever run a bit too much ahead of me on our offleash walks. He then waits for me until I catch up. Something I also never trained him to do but he did from day one...he always waits until I go up my backstairs before he starts to go up and he won't enter the house until I do. See? I couldn't have asked for a better boy!! LOL overlooking all those other "issues" that is.

Personally I never think dogs have a problem with a name change as each dog (besides Merlin) I've ever owned has been a rescue. Many were strays and were just given a name at the shelter as there was no history of their previous names. This happens a lot with strays whom have no previious history and they seem to adjust very quickly in a new home with a name change. I think it's harder on us to keep calling them by their new name. :D I kept forgetting and called him Robin many times and other days Panda until I got used to it.

Hope that helped and apologies I went on a long ramble.

Marianne and Panda
Yes, I think it would be harder on me to call her a different name than for her.
 That is wonderful! CONGRATS!
What a wonderful, HUGE accomplisment!! Yeah for you both!! :go:
This is an ENORMOUS deal!!
Next thing you know you'll be plucking his ear hair and doing his dentistry!! WooHoo!!!!

Marianne,

Getting drops in any dog's ears is a call for celebration as far as I'm concerned so what you've managed to do is nothing short of a miracle!

WooHoo to you and Panda!
