TAkE THAT BABY GATE!!!!!

Well,

Pippin has decided that nothing will keep him from his family, and that if the cats can do it, then by goodness, SO CAN HE!!!

So he is climbing over the baby gates.

It started on Saturday. I went to go make some coffee after taking him out. One second he is standing next to the baby gate, paws on the top, barking at me because I've left him in the dining room. I turn my back to go get a coffee filter, turn around, and there is my dog, sitting next to me looking very impressed with himself. I couldn't figure out what he had done...

Since then he has been doing it more and more, to the point where we were finally able to figure out what he has been doing... He'll stand on two legs, and using the holes in the gate with his back paws, climb up and boost himself over the gate. Just like he's seen the cats do. I know this can't be good for his hips :x But man do I have a smart boy!!!

He's now an intrepid adventurer, and makes his way over 2 of the 3 gates on a regular basis. I beleive the only reason he doesn't go over the one to christrina's room, is that she is just not in there often enough for him to feel a burning desire to be in there. I have yet to catch him on film- every time I grab the camera he just sits and looks at me... but I'll get it for you!

Pip, you are going to be a handful!!!! I cant wait to see pictures! Panda is very impressed with your mountaineering expertise at such a young age.
Oh boy! Our two boys can have their own stunt show. Foz can already walk up and down the stairs. We also have new gates that have a wide opener which he can fit through 8O
Yeah, Pip does stairs too- First he climbs over the stair's gate, then up, up, up to wake up Daddy!!!!

The back down, down, down when Mommy calls for him!!!
Karen,

Thanks for bringing back memories. Mopsy did the same stuff when she was little. We gave up using baby gates really fast. We had a half door in the kitchen at our old house and she climbed over that when she was about seven months old. She was so excited to see us coming in from the garage that she couldn't wait for us to open the door. Of course in her excitement she peed all over the door as she was climbing it. YUK! Anyway after that we connected the top half to the bottom half so she couldn't climb over.

haha, the puppy mischief begins!

i remember walking downstairs to get walter out of the laundry room one day and seeing him on top of the gate, two paws in front, back paws in back, looking at me with the "wasnt me" face ive grown to love. just wait til they start eating the dirt out of your plants!
 What a handful! But an adorable one
We only used one baby gate to close off a "safe" room for the cats and older dog. Well, Louie was about 4 or 5 months before he figured out that he could climb it. So, I placed the gate so it was off the ground a little (which turned out to be better for the cats-it was eaiser to get away from Louie if he was being a pain). But I had put it too high-luckily, Louie didn't figure out he could go under it for a few more weeks. Eventually, we found a balance. Although, there were times I would place it insanly high and Louie didn't understand he could go under  silly puppy!
Where do you guys find your jumper/climbers? Fat Stuff still can't get his back end in the car and Bear, although taller than the baby gate, doesn't seem to even consider passing the gate an option. Now that I think about it, other than getting in the car, I'm not sure I've ever even seen Lucy jump!

I second that. Izzie barely makes it onto the sofa. We still use baby gates, but we lean them against the doorway we don't want Izzie to go through. Then she stands there and looks at it as if to say "well, I guess that's that." She doesn't even attempt to pull them down. 8O

I'm with Jill and Amanda! I tried the other night to get Barney to jump on the couch with me, but he couldn't get his back half up...
I have low slung Danish furniture so they can almost walk onto it. If it was normal height, maybe I wouldn't have to share!
Pip has yet to get that hind end of his onto the couch... how is it that he can manage a full ascent up Mt. Baby Gate, and yet not manage to climb the foothills of the Comfortable Sofa???

One word: footholds!

That's what we do now. The gate broke in the move so it's just leaning on the doorway. Louie could easily pull it down (or now that's he's tall one leap over) but he doesn't even try. I was going to buy a new one but then I figured why when this one still works :D (and it's easier for me to get around   )
That is too cute! I work at a preschool, and the baby gates in the infant room seperating the sleepers from those awake are plastic with a completely smooth see-through side. Before our pup comes I'm really going to try and find some of these. It allows you to always see what puppy is doing, and he or she can see right to you in addition to not allowing footholds. Hmmm - we'll see if it happens by the time August rolls around!
Dancer could jump baby gates too, which is why I now use an old crib rail, she can't jump it or climb it... although now that she is older she never tries anyway.

Same here. Bosley wouldn't even think of getting his front end up higher than his backend. Waaayyyyy too much effort. Dixie justs hangs over the gate, but hasn't climbed it yet. She could probably clear it from a standing postion the way she jumps. 8O fer

And we have a couple that just lean against the stairs or doorways. Actually, Dixie has knocked one down a couple of times, and scared the daylights out of herself. Maybe that's why she doesn't try to jump it. Hmmmmmm
We have a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs and kelsey could clear that no problem when anyone knocked at the front door, non of the others ever did. Maybe her being smaller then the other 2 girls might of made a difference. I think she should of been an agility dog rather then a showgirl. She would do the same to with the grooming table, sometimes jumping up, missing the whole table and landing on the other side 8O Well she is an old chook now so that has finally stopped, only taken 10+ years to stop her doing it LOL 8)
Ha ha, that sounds so Mojo.
He was going over the gate from day one. (He was 12 weeks when we got him).
Funny how I'd have to lift him in the van but he'd go right over a gate!!! (stinker)
We ended up double gating. It was a real pain if you needed to get through but, it worked. Fortunatley we didn't have to use them very long.
hehe, do baby gates work for animals or kids? I know my kids were climbing over them pretty much as soon as they learned to walk, and the animals learned how to get past them pretty quick too. I give up on them! :)
ha ha so funny !!! What size baby gates are you lot using ?? Ollie has a dog/baby gate, its 4ft - he just sits there sticking his nose through it.
Our shepherd used to jump the gate so we put one on top of another for a few weeks. Later we only needed to prop it against the wall and she wouldn't come thru. The Sharpei, on the other hand, bashed the gate over if it wasn't attached
Well here is my boy in action!

Ok... just you wait Mt. Baby Gate, just you wait!!!!
Image

And now, for the full ascension...

up, up and over!!!
fantastic !!!!!!
That's sooo funny!

Of course, you do realize now that you'll have to make sure when you fence in your yard it's with privacy fencing - no chain links for him!
Smart little dude...with attitude....lol.....hes the litttle choo choo that could :D
Love it! Looks like in the first pic he's saying Mommy watch what I can do!
CUTE!
LOL What a little bum! LOl
What cute pictures!
When Ryan was little and Peanut was a puppy we had a baby gate to keep Ryan & the Boxers downstairs. Ryan never made it over, neither did the Boxers. But Little Baby Peanut would follow the cats right over :)
I finally got rid of it when I could trust Ryan with the stairs and also after I tripped going thru it for like the millionth time
Ha Ha Ha he is one clever lil Man
 What a smart boy :)
impressive. Merlin just gets a running start and flys over our baby gate. he's a good jumper - i wish I could get him to stop b/c I know it can't be good for him either. but it is quite the site. if I raise the gate up any higher then Daphne will be able to fit under it... crazy dogs. gotta love 'em

p.s. sorry, it took so long to reply, I don't get on this site often enough
