A new small breed puppy? Help!

My mother just sprang the news on me – she might be getting a Chihuahua this Friday! It’s spay and shots will be taken care of (which is nice!) and she’s going to get it from her friend at school.

(I still live at home!)

Mom says that if Chihuahuas aren’t her cup of tea – that I can have her (like I don’t have enough pets that I’m taking care of hehe). I’m not banking on anything – but even if I don’t get her – I need to know how Momo will deal with another pet that will be WAAAAAY smaller than herself.

I know that the kitties haven’t been squashed yet – but they knew what to expect from her when she was THEIR size. She is really big now – and I’m not sure if a puppy will understand what she’s doing.

Also – Momo is still not 2 years old yet – and a puppy herself. Will she know not to be too rough? She loves other dogs – I’m not worried about her hating it. Also – she has like… no bowl or toy aggression.

I would just hate it if Momo accidentally hurt the puppy – are their any suggestions on socializing them together until I feel comfortable?

That is great, a new member to add to the family!!!
My suggestion is only(you prabably already know) is Supervision, supervision supervision. That little puppy might be scared, thatis kinda their temperment  they like to be held, Momo will probably freak her out, they will most likley be great playmates butu it will take time for them to develope boundries between the two of them,
Good luck. I know that this can be nerve wracking b/c i am a very protective mommy, it is hard to see one establish dominance over the other :? It would be too cute if Momo had to answer to the little one :D

What if Chihuahuas aren't your cup of tea either? Will she try for a different dog if she passes this off to you? 8) Of course, I wouldn't mind a large house of dogs! :)

How old is this dog and does your mom know if it gets along with other dogs? I'd want to know that first because once I take on a furkid... afterall, it's for life! :hearts:

Tasker's mom and I have small dogs (mine is 6lbs exactly which is the size of a lot of Chihuahuas). I knew my small dog got along with anything, and I was confident I could train Yuki (a new puppy) ...being that I used to train dogs in college. My small dog is left out a lot because Yuki doesn't allow her to have any toys, so we have to make an extra effort twice a day to have separate play time. We go into a room together and play ball. This doesn't include her morning time on the treadmill (she walks for 10 min. a day on it).

I imagine if it's a typical Chihuahua, you'll have more of a Tasker's mom situation where the new dog controls all the toys.

My biggest fear with small dogs and big dogs is them being stepped on. You know your dog the best and she/he may not be as clumsy as ...let's say... Yuki. I'm ALWAYS watching the two like a hawk when they run around together. Not to mention how easy Chihuahuas can break their legs, which is why it's discouraged from them jumping off the bed AND even a high couch. Many do this, but many also end up with joint problems down the road (age). I cringe every time my friend's dog jumps from their extremely high bed. They do not fall under the "well if they've done it before w/o hurting themselves...it must be okay." So... it's hard to teach one dog one thing and then let another dog (the bigger one) do it.

I hope your mom loves this breed and finds it impossible to let go of. :)
Ditto all the above. Ty really does rule the roost around here!!!!!! He bosses poor Tasker around something FIERCE and neither of them seem to have the slightest idea what their size is.

The most important thing is supervision. I NEVER EVER EVER leave them alone together, even for a brief run to the mailbox. They play so "enthusiastically" that things an get out of hand quickly. I very seldom have to step in but when I do it's swiftly. Since neither are aware of their size anything that happened would be accidental. Ty goes in a crate when ever I leave the house, or even if I'm going to hop in the shower.

They really do get along well, but I attribute that to the fact that Tasker is the kindest most gentle dog I've ever know and really has a lot of patience with his "little brother". I would definately recommend an expen or crate to seperate them as needed.

Make sure you have taught MOMO the "release command.

It might be fun
I can't speak for chihuahuas, but I can tell you that we are doing well so far. Callie, our OES, is almost 2 years old, and we decided that she needed a friend. My mom has Callie's littermate, and they love to play together, but it is soo difficult to keep them groomed when they are together because they love to chew on each other. So we knew we weren't ready for another sheepy in the house. My husband has always wanted a pug, and we happened to know someone with a new litter of pug puppies. So we decided we were up to the challenge. I agree with the previous posts. SUPERVISION! We have had the pug for almost a month now, and it seems that they are getting along famously. At first, we were a little worried that we might have mad a bad decision because Callie was a little rough with her. Afterall, she was used to playing with one of her own. But with a lot of supervision and plenty of individual playtime, I think they have finally got each other figured out. Lambda (the pug) is an aggravater! She will run up to Callie and bite her and then run and hide under low furniture. They are hilarious to watch! Of course we still have to watch them constantly, but I think they are going to be fine together and turn out to be really good friends. Lambda climbs all over Callie when she's laying down, and then Callie will have Lambda's whole leg in her mouth. But she has obviously learned to be gentle because Lambda loves it and goes back for more. I think Callie has grown up a lot even in the last month, she is suddenly the well-behaved big sister! And the extra playtime is good for her too, because we can never seem to give her as much exercise as she would like. ...now if we could just get the little one to stop eating so much sheepy hair!
HAHAHAHA, sounds adorable!!!
So are you, your husband and all your animals living at your mom's? Sounds like a full house!
My mom bought one of those little "demons" and within a few days had to call the guy to come and get it. We had to lock it in the bathroom until he got there!!! Mean little sucker, and destructive!

She didn't care about the money, just wanted that thing out of the house!
No offense to our guest but as the saying goes...... "there are no bad dogs, only bad owners". Not every dog is for every person . I am assuming the dog you are talking about was older and must have had a tough sartt to life, issues in a previous home. I hope he found a home that was able to deal with his (her ) issues.
Ginny,
I beg to differ here. Peanut is a little demon  . He had a great start in life. I got him from a wonderful breeder. He has always been loved. He had obedience class when he was younger and did wonderfully.
He was destructive as a puppy....which all breeds are.
Maybe part of it is the seizures, but he is just down right evil sometimes.
He has been to the groomers since he was 9 1/2 weeks old.... So you think he'd be used to it. He bites me if I even come near him with a brush.
He can also be sweet and loving too. Maybe he's just schitzo?
Smaller dogs do have a tendency to be evil! I don't know why.
My sister's best friend had a chihuahua that is completely psycho.
A friend of mine, when I was in HS had a teacup poodle that was the most evil dog I had ever met. I opened the door to his bedroom and Trudy came running and jumped up at me and grabbed onto my hand and clamped down. Once she got to know me and get used to me she was ok. But still every now and then for absolutely no reason she would attack.
I definitely prefer BIG DOGS!
Did he get dropped on his head as a baby :excited:
LOL Elissa. Big dogs do act a lot better. I can't tell you the number of times I got bit/bit at by little dogs as a groomer. The big dogs? The majority of them would just stand there and let me do anything to them.

The worst bite I ever got was from a miniature poodle that bit all the way through my finger. Ouch! I still have scars from that one. Mean little devils...and I had poodles growing up! lol
I like them all! Ty is the sweetest cuddliest dog I every owned, Tasker is the kindest and gentelest......guess i've been lucky!!
I like little dogs too. Until I married Jason, that's about all I had. They just seem more tempermental! lol
Haggis so far is incredibly sweet with people & other dogs. He just lays on the floor on his back submitting to Rebecca & Frank... I was worried he would be constanly bugging them but so far so good!
