what clippers do you use???

Ok........... I know I asked the question "how hard can it be?" and you all gave me great answers...... so it was with the utmost confidence I tacked Dexter's hair cut this past saturday.......

Did you ever see the t-shirt that says "you're ugly and your mother dresses you funny"???
I keep thinking of that when I look at dexter now....

Bless his lil heart he was such a GOOD BOY........... I can't tell you how good of a boy he was for this ordeal. He never got upset or cranky.

The story begins with borrowing the neighbor's horse shears........ and putting Dexter up on the tail gate of the truck...... the horse shears weren't that great so we ran into the IFA (Intermountain Farmers Assoc) and picked up what they told me was a "good" pair of shears.... yeah right..... those didn't even cut the long hair.........

So........... the kids grabbed the scissors and started snipping while I tried to use the horse shears to "even it out"- well it didn't work very well to say the least.

But Dexter has a hair cut and he is very happy that he is cooler now and we are happy that we can see those beautiful brown eyes........

my question is: what clippers do you use??? or does your groomer use. I know there has got to be something out there that will get thru his thick undercoat... but don't want to get the wrong thing - AGAIN!!!!!

I'll post the pictures of dexter and his new "do" soon...........
thanks,

I use oster Golden A5 clippers. They seem to do a good job.
Hi :D
There are several Oster Golden A5 clippers to choose from 8O

Two Speed Golden A5 Clipper, Through Amazon.com from KV Vet Supply

Which ones do y'all like the best?
Where are all those super shoppers out there?
Gee, need to find the best buy...
I blew my budget last week on the Break-Away collars for the 3 Shaggies...Bad shopper here
Thanks!
Diane
The two speed that comes with the #10 blade is a good choice.

I have a single speed and that's fine for as often as I make use of it. We've had it for 10 years or more and never any problem, except I ruined one blade by dropping the clipper on the floor.
I also have the single speed, and use #10 blade.
Between the toes and private areas I like the 5/8 wide blade.
OOOOh :D
Good information!
Now, if my Beebles comes away looking like a clown...
There's no one to blame but myself & of course those darn clippers 8O
Thanks!
Diane...reading Carl's posts on grooming verrry carefully
ok, maybe I'm just being dense........... but I looked up the Oster Golden A5 clippers on Drs. Foster and Smith's site and found them for $119.99........... I also found the Oster golden Home Grooming Kit for $39.99 which has a 6" clipper adjustable blade, comb attachments, etc.......... - I noticed the Golden A5 doesn't have any "comb attachments" which I thot was what would keep the cut even??? - and why is there such a price difference???? - -
Please advise...........
thanks,
Teresa
My Golden A5 came with a #10 blade and one one-inch (I think) comb.

I bought it a long time ago, and the price was a wild bargain at the time at $105; everybody else was charging $20 or $25 more. They also sold blades for $11 to $15. Sadly, they aren't steep discount anymore. :(

I had a cheapo Sunbeam "small animal" clipper before my Oster... It was such a bad experience -it basically didn't cut the hair- that we almost didn't buy the A5, we weren't sure it was the clipper's fault, or we were just inept. But we're glad we did now, it was definitely the clipper.
Based on forum advice, I bought the Oster Golden A5 two speed with the #10 blade. I love it. It works wonderfully and the blade cuts through the hair like a hot knife in butter.

I also bought an extra blade, 4F, and the cooling lubricant and cleaning stuff at the same time. I still haven't used the 4F blade, though. I've never used the combs either, but understand from a groomer that the hair has to be completely tangle free in order for them to work properly.

Do post the pictures - would love to see Dexter's new hair cut.

Hi Beaureguard's Mom :D
In what situations would we use the 4F blade?
If you haven't used it ... wondering if I need it?! So very new & a bit chicken here :?

Yuhoo Ron :D
Is this something the Forum can get credit for when/if I order the extra blade, 4F, and the cooling lubricant and cleaning stuff ?

I have both the Oster A5 single and 2 speed as well as an Andis. I like the Andis feel and am currently using that more often........because I dropped the Oster 2 speed and broke a part that I need to replace..........yes, you can buy a whole clipper, piece by piece if necessary. The single speed is the oldest, 25 years old and still runs but seems so darn slow. It is my emergency back up now.

The #10 is a good universal blade. As you go up in numbers, the hair left gets shorter. I also just did Jack and MO with a 5F blade and am mostly satisfied, tho in the matted areas ( ) it didn't zip through as easily as the #10.

Price is a choker, but figure the cost of taking him to a groomer to be clipped down and you pay for the device in two groomer visits.

Ditto the comb attachment, the hair must be tangle free and the blade has to be finer: Friend suggested a 40.......so I've yet to conquer the comb attachement.
Yes, but I just found out today that the rules for Amazon are changing, and should make ordering easier with oes.org getting the credit,

Let me know if you need a link right away. Otherwise I'll provide a link soon.
Diane - the 4F just leaves the hair a bit longer than the #10 blade. I haven't used it yet, but I imagine I will soon. I volunteered to give my brother's English Springer Spaniel her summer hair cut (I need the practice and it's hard to find willing volunteers  ).

PetsMart sells the comb attachments with the #40 blade that Sheepieboss mentioned for about $45, I think. I am a bit leary of trying them since they're tougher to master. :?
I swear by my #4 Skip Tooth blade for getting through mats.

There's a good thread here:

On the top of the skip tooth, every other tine instead of going straight forward is bent down towards the dog, only slightly recessed from the surface, and is quite sharp and pointy... looks to me like it is engineered to get into/under mats and pull the blade down towards the skin.

Hmmm...need volunteers? Where are you in NC?
What time do you want Beebs there...got to get on I85 before rush hour though :D
I have never done any grooming...just a trim here & there with scissors! I don't think I need any extras ... just something to trim the fuzzy butt & touch ups! Trying to stay on top of the matts...this coat change & the back yard playtime make some mean matts
Not sure if I have the nerve to do the complete summer buzz alone
My knees get weak just thinkin' about it!
I know it's just hair & it WILL grow back!
Don't want her to look weird though :(
Diane...can y'all tell I am nervous & haven't even bought the clippers yet

We also made the mistake of buying our first pair of clippers from the local farm supply store. They were expensive Wahl brand "animal" clippers that were supposed to work for dogs, horses, goats, you-name-it. They sure didn't work on our OES. Ended up giving these to my sister and they work nicely on her golden retriever's coat.

Last year I bought the Oster A5 turbo two-speed clippers and they are great. Yes, they were a bit pricey but buying the $39.99 clippers will be a waste of your money. They are NOT the same quality and won't hold up to the abuse of clipping an OES. You can buy the comb attachments separately from petedge.com if you want. I've only had marginal success with them because they don't go throught mats very well and that's the only reason I shear my dogs. Good luck!

I'm only about 4 hours straight up I85 - come on over! :D
I have A-5s too. I've just Wahls, Osters, and Andis clippers. They all work about the same, but the Osters seem to last longer for me anyway. The pair I have now are going on 10 years old and still going strong (of course, they've hardly been used the last 3-4 years since my mini. schnauzer passed away though).
I have the Andis AGC super two speed and love it!
Cuts like butter 8)
I bought at Pet Smart a couple of years ago, an Oster dog clipper model number 78970-100 made in China, but a couple of weeks ago, I went by another Pet Smart store in Orlando, FL, to buy spare blades for this clipper and they sold me the CRYOTECH model 78913-226 blade, but the clipper screws do not go all the way down in this blade and I am worried that in time, the screws could loosen and the blade could fly away while operating it.

Can you tell me if this spare blade is the correct one for this dog clipper?

PS: I live overseas in Panama, Central America.
Try contacting Oster directly http://www.osterpro.com/ to find out what blades are compatible with your clippers.

Good luck!
I think that Cryotech blades are made by Oster. They hold a trademark for that name.

I have a WONDERFUL Oster Blade and Clipper reference chart here:
http://photos.oes.org/albums/userpics/1 ... eChart.pdf

You blade number is listed, but I don't see your clipper in the chart.

Good luck.
Is it possible to do a puppy cut with the Oster A5? What length hair is left with the #10 blade and the 4F blade?

Cassie
Why didn't I read this post before today?? I made the error of buying a Wahl clipper at Tractor Supply, because I wasn't thrilled with our last trip to the groomers. Add Finnigan to the "My Mother Dresses Me Funny Club", he's a mess! He probably could have done better than I did  I'll have to try and post some pictures this week, Thankfully, it' s just hair. I learn something new here everyday.

If you're not happy with the clippers, can you take them back? With ours, we waited much too long and thought the problem was with our dog's coat or "pilot error", not the clippers or the blade. We found that even after sending the blades back for sharpening we hated the Wahl clippers. Don't get me wrong, Wahl is a good brand that many professional groomers use. I just think the Tractor Supply set we bought would have worked better on horses, cattle and goats.

If it seems like the blade isn't cutting properly, clean the blades thoroughly in blade wash to get the protective coating off them. That may help. You can probably get this at PetSmart or order from a catalog.

You can still go back and clean up the shaggy areas you may have missed with the clippers. Always cut in the direction the hair grows. Keep repeating to yourself: It will grow back... It will grow back... It will grow back... It will grow back...
I think the cliipers I have work fine, it's just that I had no idea what I was doing. Beginner's luck was not on my side. Ron mad it look so easy with those pictures of Mulligan, I thought I'd give a whirl. My sister saw him today and said he has racing stripes
Racing stripes! I've had those!

Patience and time. :D

I'm not very good at it, but it went easier this time than last. I usually say that several times a year.

Mulligan is a very tolerant doggie.
