How do your dogs ride in the car?

This topic has probably been broached before...but I am curious about how everyone's dogs ride in the car. By that I mean...are they in a crate, free to wander, seatbelted or restrained in some other way? This may be for short trips or long trips...or maybe different ways depending on the length of the trip.

Thanks,

Amanda

All of the above, depending on the trip.

Normally Bosley lies on the floor, tucked in behind the seat, and Dixie lays on the bench. We have a seat belt, if we need it.
Annie always sits or curls up on the back seat behind the driver's seat. She doesn't make a peep. Foz will start out in his crate...we are going to my inlaws this weekend (about 45 minutes) so I'll keep you posted! :D
If it is just me & Ben, he sits upfront with me.........if I take Kiara too, then I put all the back seats down and let them take over in the back of the SUV.............Ben will just lay down, Kiara is the pacer
I either put the entire back down in the SUV and let Barney pace or I just put him in the very back of the SUV and let him pace in a smaller space!
Daisy usually rides in the front seat. I know this isn't really the best place, but she does usually lie down across the seat w/ her head over the console in the middle and even rests her head on the stick shift.

She does have free roam in the car and will occasionally go to the back seat to lie down if in the car for a while. I'm hoping that as she continues to get bigger she'll think the back seat is the place to be. I should have started her out in the back seat but didn't think much about it as it was all very short trips and my previous dog soon decided he preferred the back seat. I do agree restraints are a good idea, especially if they jump around a lot. While I was traveling back and forth for job interviews and looking for a new home, I really thought about getting a restraint but as Daisy was becoming nervous with all the changes, I didn't think it was the right time to introduce it and luckily we didn't have any problems.
I own a Dodge Pick UP with camper shell over the bed. I have 2 fiberglass or plastic kennels anchored in the bed for the guys, short trip or long. Riding in the cab is dangerous for one dog and if I put both up front one would have to drive because there would be no room for me.:D When we go, I drop the tail gate and say "kennel" and they hop right on in them.
On the drive down from georgia Louie was in the back of the suv, because it was such a long trip. But on regular stuff I like to have him in the back seat. A seatbelt, however, has been tough to introduce because we just don't take too many car trips. So I'm planning on doing a bunch of random drives to get him used to it. Now, where do I find the time...?
For short trips, they lay or sit in the back seat.
For long trips, I put them in a crate. I don't worry about them bothering me while I drive, but I do worry that if I were to get in an accident on a major highway I wouldn't want them to be able to run off.
Back seat, no matter which vehicle we take. He loves to ride with his head out the window. Once he gets sick of that he lays down and watches out the window. On long trips we put the seats down in the back of the truck so he has more room to stretch out.
I have a station wagon and the girls are in the back of it, plenty of room and they are behind a dog guard/grill which is fitted behind the back seat.

It keeps them safe, I never let them sit on the back seat of the car anymore as years ago I had peppa laying across the back seat and we had an accident. Thank goodness it was not a major one but it was enough of a hit for her to fly off the seat, hit the back of the front seat and hurt herself.
If I was going any faster the results could of been worse, maybe a sheepie flying through the front window.

So I have learnt a lesson there, seat belt for the dog or in a crate or behind some sort of safety grill as it is just not worth the risk.

We restrain babies, toddlers and kids as well as ourselves in the car in baby seats or seat belts for that very reason.
Pepsi and Rags are very good in the car. They get in pick a spot and either look out the window or they will lie down until we get to our destination. Pepsi always ends up with the runs after a car ride. Even if it is a short ride like to the dog park.
We have a full size van. Mojo ususally lays in the back until we stop. Then he has to get up and look out the window. Poor guy gets up at every stop light.
ARE WE THERE YET!!
I squish all 3 into the back of a Cherokee. They're packed in pretty tight so I'm not worried about any of them going anywhere. ;) Bear and Clyde are actually pretty good about lying down but Lucy ha to be up, preferably with her head out the window. In all seriousness, I have to buy another car because, in a few months, when Bear gets bigger, they really aren't going to fit anymore.

I bought the first car just for them so why not another? :)

:D I'd do the same thing (and i'm in fact going to later this summer)
My dogs are free to wander in the backseat. Unless there is no one in the passenger seat then Merlin will come sit in the front seat. They've never really been on long trips. Usually around town when I'm running errands or something. Merlin has come to Madison (an hour away) with me a few times and then he just normally stays in back b/c he can't get comfortable in the front. But that's about the extent of their travel. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing if I take them for a long trip, probably just have them in the back with the seat down so they both have room to stretch out. ( I have a Scion XB, you know those new cars that look like a box)

The main reason we bought the Tahoe instead of the quad cab truck...I said the dogs need the back, and I can't do that with a truck. Hehehe...we have no regrets at all we love the Tahoe. Now I want the Pontiac Vibe, but again I am looking at the size of cargo and if Remy will be comfy. It's a family car, and she is part of the family. I just have to be her voice.
Ours are in the back seat. My car is a hatchback - downsizing from minivans (had 3).
On the way to training class on Monday, Bart decided to sit in the hatch and watch people out the back window! We got lots of waves and people pointing - it was hilarious. And Simon the basset was glad to get the whole backseat to himself  .
