Serious question about a goat that needs help !!

I know this is a weird question, but does anyone know of any goat rescues? Or even someone who might like to have a goat?

The problem is, I have raised a 2mth old blind baby goat. I have been medicating her eyes since the day she was born, I've even taken her to a specialist, but she can't see anything.

I can't keep her myself, and nobody wants a blind goat. She is so sweet, but will need a safe and secure home. I'm sure you know people eat goat meat and I'm not going to let that happen to her.

She finds her food just fine and will even follow you if you call to her.

Please if you have any advice let me know !!!!!

My aunt used to raise goats. Maybe I can put you two in touch. She might know someone or something...

She's in Georgia by the way.
I'll ask my brother too. He's a softy and he has a bunch of random sweet animals on his farm, including pet goats. He's in Maryland so Isabella's aunt would be a more convenient option if that works out.
Give Geri House in Michigan a buzz. I didn't ask while we were there, but she has a VERY large shed on her 30 acre property and we saw a sign that said "Beware of Goat". She's been doing dog rescue for decades so this might also be right up her alley as she's in the country too. Send me a PM and I'll give you her phone number.
Thank you,

I am willing to travel with her, if she were to find a good home.

She will need a fenced area with no electric fence.

We always see goats at work that have been attacked by dogs, and I would hate for that to happen to her.

If she could find a home with another goat that can wear a bell would do her alot of good.
Michigan may be a bit far to travel, but thank you for trying to help.
Hi Hannah,

I don't have any advice but just wanted to offer my support and send well wishes your way. Lets hope the little fellow gets a great home. Keep us posted!

My brother says he has room for the goat!! He has a beautiful, non-working farm in western Maryland with goats, horses, ducks, etc. He says though that he could not manage doing the eye drops every day. Is that a permanent requirement due to the blindness or is that something she will outgrow the need for?
Wow - that's fantastic, Val! :go:

Agreed! Who would've though! Between all of us, we can meet almost any need on this forum!
She no longer gets the eye drops at all. There is no sense, they are not going to improve.

Does he have a fenced area with no electric. Also no ponds or lakes, she may fall in and drown.
Is there anyone I can send a picture to that can load it on here so you can see her? She is so cute!!
Goto http://photos.oes.org and upload it!
I would love to see a picture. My brother has a section of his small barn reserved for goats and a goat pen with a normal fence. There is a pond elsewhere on the property but it is not in the area accessible by goats. I've asked him to let me know what is the best way for you to coordinate with him.
I've tried but I can't do it for some reason. Help
Darn -- my brother has qualms about his ability to ensure the safety of the goat. . .

First, here's the picture. She's really cute!

My brother says that he is planning to move his goats to the area by the pond while his fence is being reconstructed. He is also planning to keep relocating the goats to clear out various sections of his property and so it would not be a very stable territory that a blind goat may need. He also worries that she will either get beaten up or made pregnant by the other goats. He says he's willing to be a last resort, but it really worries him.
:(

He suggested you might get help by posting on the following yahoo groups:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/practical-goats/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goats_101/

On the other hand, he asked whether she is housebroken (which suggests he's still considering it). :?
Good news, I may have located a home closer to us. It's a rescue group that already has 2 blind cows.

If I can get her to stop with the bottle and drink from a pan (bucket), they will take her.

They do not neuter the goats and many of them have babies of course. I will have Lola fixed before I were to send her there. She doesn't need any more stress in her life. Working for a vet, I can have it done for almost no money.

I sure hope she starts drinking on her own. She has problems not finding the bucket, and gets upset when I put her nose in it. I'll keep trying.

Thanks for all the help and I'll keep you up to date!!
I'm not sure how to classify this thread; from goat to hero, hero to goat then goat to hero?
Does anyone have any experience/suggestions for getting a blind animal to drink. It may be helpful for Hannah.
Bad news......I just found out from a friend, this rescue sometimes sells them for meat.

She's not going there, that's for sure!!

I'll keep looking......
Yikes! That's hardly a rescue! Is she housetrained? Could she try drinking from one of those bottles hamsters use? They make big ones for dog crates. . . That might be easier than teaching her to find a bowl of water.
Here is a picture of her drinking from her large bottle.

The problem is, when you fill the bottle up you have to show her where it is (she want go looking for it). Then she drinking the whole bottle till it's gone. Then you have a bloated goat on your hands.

She does eat goat chow, hay, grass, fruits, and raisen brand cereal.

No she is not housebroken. She has a large dog crate that she is in at night. During the day she is in a 10x10 dog pen. It's no quality of life for her.

PS thanks ron
I live in Western Maryland and have a 16 acre farmette. Although I am a new goat mom, I would love to adopt this sweet kid. We have only 2 goats now but intend to get more. The 2 we have are about 2 1/2 months old and already wear collars so we could put a bell on them so she could stick close to them. Do you still have her??
I forgot to mention that the 2 goats we have were bottle fed because there mom refused them and we have just finished weaning them. My 3 boys would be thrilled to help look after her.
any news? did you find a home for the goat yet? just woundering and hoping it all worked out. :D
Just thought I would point out that the goat thread is over a year old.
Thanks Kelli,

Yes Lola found a home in NC with a wonderful family. She has been there almost a year now, and things are going great.

She has a goat friend she lives with named sugar pop. I call it her seeing eye goat. Sugar pop wears a bell so Lola knows where she is. They have a wind chime on the barn so she knows which direction to head home. On days there is no wind, she has a radio in the barn that stays on 24/7.

She beats the other goats back to the barn when it's feeding time, and is quite a food hog.

Kathy, the lady who adopted her sends me pictures at least once a month, and we talk every week.

Thanks for asking about her.
That is such a touching update. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

I could've sworn we were just talking about it. I was really surprised to see it was that old!
Thanks for the update. I was wondering how it all ended.
Am curious how the baby blind goat is doing? My neighbor does horse rescue and has just rescued a 5-week-old blind goat.
Don't know how old your post is, but we have a blind 3 month old nanny who is doing well. We run a "misfit critter" farm for special needs animals. We've got 3 horses with problems, a couple deformed cats, a blind dog, and two other pound rescue dogs. Everyone here gets along and are safe from harm. It's amazing how these disable animals have bonded. Your little goat would be very welcome here. We're in central Illinois. Thanks for your time, Vicki
To Hanna's mom, lisa I have a 18 year old Goat that some times acts like he can't see, other times he's find? this just started to happen, I'm buying a brighter light for his area, If you still looking for a place for your blind goat I'll put him with Peppie, I've had Peppie a long time, he's my little buddie, I'm searching for answers on goat blindness, I do know that they depend more on the smell that sight to get around, I'm in easter Ok, let me know stevenjamesdifiore@yahoo.com
We are searching for several goats to help control & maintain & overgrown wooded paddock. It is 3 board fenced w/ 4" x 4" goat fence secured to the 3 board.
We would be interested.
