How do I get them to chill????

So, I am not going to complain, because Ben is perfect  I am merely going to ask a question about a certain four legged family member's behavior...... :D.......

1st question: Ben is always on the go, he will not sit down for a moments rest, he even wakes me up a few times a night for me to let him out of the room so he can go outside then pace the house. 8O (He is home all day with Kiara in the house, I let them out when I get home and I have an "open door policy" in the house....where I leave the back door open for them to come and go as they wish.......my SIL had told me to give him some Benedryl to relax him, and allow me for a good nights rest.....that was what was recommended to her, by her Vet, with her old dog....anyway, I haven't tried that yet, I am scared to hurt him.......so, what can I do to make him just chill out and relax???

2nd question: Both pups get "jealous" of one another....they get along great, not complaints, but, if I pet Kiara, Ben will run over and overtake the situation, and if I love on Ben, Kiara will come up and "play bark" at him, then they start rough housing.......how do I get them to take turns?

3rd question: If I sit on the floor, Ben will come and sit on me, he sits on everone, but he will not just sit and be quiet....he is constantly rooting for hands and rolling all over the place...........again, how do I get him to chill?

4th question: Ben loves, loves, loves feet! That is how he wakes me at night and in the morning, he will find my feet under the covers and lick them..........he also does this when we are watching TV and my feet are kicked up...........what is the deal?

Now for some bragging.................we have a strange neighbor, well the whole family is a bit "touched", but the also have a choc. lab that is strange too......now for those who need a reminder our other pup Kiara, is a chow/pit/border collie mix, she is 7yrs. and the biggest love bug ever.......well, ever since we moved to our house, Kiara has never liked this lab/lady, they walk by our house everyday and she has a fit........barks & lunges at the window.....completly not "Ki".......well one day I saw the lab run across the street and attack the other neighbors dog......so, I said to my Hubby, something is very strange, if Ki doesn't like them and now a LAB IS ATTAKING????, Strange! So, the other day, I was in my living room and the baby crawled over to the front window, where the dogs were laying, to look out....fine....no problem....well, next thing I know, I hear the most horrendous sound comming from Ben & Ki, like a gurgle/growl and barking like crazy........I though they were fighting (strange as they get along beautifully) but, then I realized, my GOD the baby!!!!!!!!!! I ran to the baby, snatched him up and realized, that crazy lab was on the other side of the window, lunging at it, bearing teeth.......!

Ben has never, never, ever been the least bit aggressive! Once I yelled at them and Ben saw that I had the baby, they calmed down and he came to "Baby J" and kissed his feet!!!

So, I came to realize, yeah my dogs are really awsome and sweet beyond belief, but they are not going to let anyone or anything hurt or mess with their family!

Yea Ben & Ki!!!!!!!!!!!

First -your weird neighbors need to be reminded to keep their rabid lab in their own yard!! Seriously. That's dangerous.

Sounds like Ben needs more excercise. Even though he's allowed to come & go inside the house/yard as he pleases, he still needs to be walked every day. Take him for a good long walk at least once a day and you'll be surprised at the big difference it makes in his behaviour.

I have no idea what to do about his foot fetish.
Wow! 8O How scary that must have been for you! What angels you have there in Ben and Kiara. :go:

I would talk to those neighbors, before something happens to another dog or child. Did their lab hurt the other neighbor's dog that he attacked? Does your area have a leash law? I would at the very least alert the authorities so they know what's going on before someone calls them for an emergency.

As for the Benedryl, it won't hurt Ben if given in small enough doses. Have you ever tried Rescue Remedy? I haven't used it on Drez myself, but there are lots of threads here that mention it. Hopefully it's just puppy energy that he'll outgrow!

Agreed. If you don't feel like walking (because we all know there are days when we don't want to!) find a dog park and let them run for an hour. He'll sleep after that. I drop mine off at doggy day care once a week so I can get some peace and quiet while I watch Lost as well as get the tough grooming done!

Guess I should have mentioned, I do walk him every night (almost 3 miles) after I get the kids to bed, so, usually around 7:30ish..............I know I could save alot of nervousness in the house, if I could do it sooner, however, I work full time, have to come home make dinner, take care of the kids/hubby......so 7:30ish is as soon as I can get to it...........
Chris,

There is a leash law in effect, the dog just ran out the front door (seems to be, when the kids were playing) and darted out to the other dog!! There was a bit of yelping, I believe the other dog was a schnauzer (they moved since then), but I do not think anything too bad.....

..........and yes, the pups are angels............I just cannot express how much I love my kids, two and four legged!!!!
Rebecca....your story is so similiar to mine. I have two sheepies, and the minute I get home from work its non stop rough housing until 10:30 pm. The first thing I do when I get home is take them out to play ball for almost an hour. They run the entire time. Then we come back in and they relax for a little while, but then are at it again, wrestling, running crazy. We then go out again, and they get tired. But as soon as I sit down to relax they start going at it again. My rescue, Miller, is mainly the one that can not sit still for two minutes. I wish they would play while a Iwas at work, but they sleep all day.....:)

Also with the jealosy, they are the same way. I can not get any alone time with either one of them, because the other one comes up from behind and barks and play bits etc. Training is very tough with just me and two big dogs.

You are not alone, same thing at my house!! I am hoping with age, they learn to relax....so I can too......
What wonderful pups to stand up for the baby! That must have been scary.

I wonder if you could put some of that clear no bite polish on your toes. Maybe he won't like the taste and will stop licking 8O
My 3 year old, Carl, has a new nickname of Twitch. He is just full of energy. We found that when he wears his backpack he uses his energy better, leaves our hands alone and doesn't feel the need to rough house with the puppy so much.
We just put a couple of 16oz water bottles in it and off he goes. He actually looks pretty proud of himself when we put it on!
Mandy--we need a picture of Carl and his backpack...
Alrighty!
Thanks you guys! :D

I am gonna try taking Ben to the park this weekend....we'll see how that goes........and thanks for letting me know I am not alone and not making fun of my baby and his feet issue........ 8O.........wierdo!!!! :D
Oh I was thrilled to read your post!!! Mopsey and Prissy are the same story!! Prissy WILL NOT EVER relax unless she is sleeping - and she's 11!!! Sweet as anything, but hyper! She does almost everything your Ben does (except lick our feet at night becuase she is downstairs). :D We walk her all the time but she is still energy!! The best way we've found for her to calm down is take her on another long walk (last Sat was 4 miles) and then bring her home and give her some kind of chewable. She SOEMETIMES might even lay down to chew!! We love her energy but sometime we get worried that she won't know when to stop at her age! Good luck - does he like Kongs?
Training is a good exhausting pastime. 15 minutes of sit, down, stay...especially with a clicker, (if you are familiar with how to do it) will tire the mind.
Been there done that on the training. It amazed the people training us that Carl would not sit still! He sits, he downs, he heels, all while constantly moving. They were flabbergasted.
Hence the name, Twitch.

Different strokes for different dogs. Obedience training seems to get him more fired up. He's weird, what can I say. You just have to keep trying stuff until you find what works for you and yours.
Hi,

I take my boys on long walks daily too but found training and finding a safe place for them to run like the wind, seems to wear them out better.

I was told by my trainer that making them "work" or "think" often wears them out much more than walks. Bosley's mom had a good suggestion regarding the training. I admit that when Merlin was in obedience he was exhuasted when he arrived home from all that "work" and "thinking".

As for the attention seeking...here's what my trainer suggested when Panda arrived at my home and all the dogs would vie for attention and get into each others faces. Remember close face up scenerios might trigger spats in some dogs. Each dog has a hand for pats. I never waiver from which hand I use and yup it does work!

Example..dogs come to you for attention. Use left hand for one...right for the other..call each dog to that side. May take a few times but they do get it. If you are with one dog alone..if they go to the wrong hand..hold it firmly at your side and draw attention to the other hand, holding it up like a branch on a tree. Okay I realize the neighbors are going to think you're the nutty one. :D
Dog eventually notices that hand in pat position and walks over there. Hope that makes sense! :D Now a year and 1/2 later both Merlin and Panda will always go to the correct hand for pats. Don't get into each others faces, so no problems as each are on opposite sides of me and not next to each other for my attention. LOL Blue gets the same side as Merlin too but in the case where I'm on the couch...being a realist with three dogs and only two hands I have used my foot for pats on occasion. So both hands are patting and my foot too. Luckily I don't drink or I couldn't attempt it! Ha ha!

Yeah! to your Ben and Ki for protecting the household and baby!!Sending belly rubs their way!
