Hip dysplasia

Martha does the "bunny hop" running, which is really cute but also a sign of possible future hip problems. I discussed it with the vet when she was 3 months old, and the vet said not to worry yet, that she still has a lot of growing to do. Now that she is a little over 4 months old, she is running in a more normal fashion, with the back legs moving individually. My vet has recommended that I consider the PennHip test, developed at the University of Pennsylvania, which is a very good indicator of future problems with hip dysplasia. Here is the link for information on this test http://www.pennhip.org/. I was curious if anyone has had their sheepie tested this way, or what information anyone might be able to give me regarding sheepie's and hip dysplasia. Thanks!

Just do a search on the subject, and you'll find VOLUMES on the subject. I just posted a bit in another thread under Medical on Hip Clicking.

I cringe when I hear of dogs "bunny hopping." My Drez used to do that too and we thought it was SO cute. Turned out to be not so cute, but a big problem.

Martha's just a baby yet, so chances are good that it's just a growing stage, but I'd be on the look-out. Of course, I'm paranoid because my Drez has it, but I'd rather be safe than sorry!
I personally do not think pennhip is a reliable method with OES. That is because they are evaluated against others of the breed, and there have not been enough done that way yet to make an accurate comparison IMO
I would go with a standard xray and have a radiologist look it over.
The best time to do this is around 18 to 24 months of age.
personally do not think pennhip is a reliable method with OES-- I AGREE with this statment.

Bunny hop is not something to worry about at this stage, wait until a puppy is 6 months old and do a hip x-ray if you are really worried. Bones are still growing, they grow until they are at least a year old before they actually harden.
Some puppies have more rear angulation then others, they all grow at different rates. Some go through an ugly stage, can't walk a straight line, then everything catches up with each other and they move like a dream.

Don't wait too long to check out bunny-hopping. There is a good operation that can only be done before the bones stop growing (a Triple Pelvic Osteotomy or TPO). If I remember correctly, the upper limit is 15 to 18 months. If I had a bunny-hopping dog, I'd have its hips x-rayed before a year.
My Bouvier had the operation at about 15 months - she will be 10 in May and shows very little stiffness anywhere.
