Two Years Ago...

Hi Everyone,

I've copied the url from this forum from 2 years ago of how Panda was rescued from Hong Kong and flown 13 hrs to Vancouver It's because of this wonderful forum and the people in it is how he came to be "my boy". It enfolds like a story and it's quite lenghty (5 pages) so be forwarned, still it's a good read with a happy ending!

Apologies if I keep rehashing this story but besides Blue's unwillingness to be happy with his new brother...with a lot of patience, work and love none of Panda's former "issues" have ever emerged. For those of you willing to take an abused dog into their home - I won't sugarcoat anything..it takes work, consistency and for each step forward it may be a step backwards. For example it took six weeks to be able to touch the top of Panda's head, 6 months before I was even able to touch his back, months before I could groom him, touch his ears, he lunged at park cars, attacked the vaccuum cleaner and went into a frenzy the first time he was in the house..biting CD's, sweaters...
2 years later, I can groom him, rub the inside of his ears, leave him in the house and nothing is damaged or touched. He's never had an accident in the house. Sleeps with cats and cuddles with them, gives kisses to the Bunny and Guinea pig, loves men, women, children and greets everyone with a butt wiggle and kisses. I vaccum, mow the lawn and water the grass with no reaction from him. He walks with me on the sidewalk on busy streets and is not at all distracted by cars driving by. He sits well in the van, never reacts to people throwing sticks to their dogs or him in parks...whew took 2 years and a lot of patience but he's such a good boy!
(still working on actually ever cleaning his ears or cutting his nails) but I'm patient and that may come in year 3 or 4. :D

I thought you've had him a lot longer. I've only been here a little over a year, and boy...he really has come a long way. Happy 2 year anniversary to you both. :)
I thought it was longer too.
I always loved seeing Panda's story.
I LOVE happy endings 8)
Thanks very much!

The reason I often write about Panda boy aka Robin is I want people to be realistic when they get a rescue who may had a abusive past. Sometimes you can get lucky and have a wonderful dog but most often abused dogs need to feel trust again in humans. It doesn't happen overnight and like foster children, sometimes when they start feeling comfortable and safe is when the "issues" emerge. It's important to remember that and never let your guard down and start feeling complacent too soon. I still watch Panda 24/7 around people even tho he's never done anything to them that I'm concerned about ..yet I know the potential is there should he ever view aggression from a person.

Once the trust is there however, you will have the most loving and devoted dog on the planet. It is worth the time spent and I would encourage many of you whom feel they can do it..to please open up your heart and home to a rescue.

Make Love, not War is the only way to deal with bad behavior. Wish our government would adopt your policy.

Congratulations Marianne - a strong, patient woman. Give Panda a pet from me and a good licking from Maggie.
Wow... thank you for retelling the story and providing the link because I had not heard it.

You did a great job saving this boy... "great" doesn't seem adequate for what you did. All the dedication and hard work that went into making it work. You didn't give up when so many would have.

Again, great job and happy anniversary! :D
Always a good story, Marianne! :high5: Panda is so fortunate to have found you, and I'm sure you would say you are so fortunate to have found him!

Give that sweet boy a big belly rub from me, and a few hundred licks from Drezzie! :hearts:
Panda has such a great rescue story. It's really a testiment to your perserverance and the resiliant nature of the sheepie. You are both blessed. :D
Two years.......time flies! How fortunate Panda is to have found such as wonderful mother allowing him a second chance for a happy life.

Jack will have been here 1 year come April 15th.

Me too! He's so lucky to have found you Marianne! :D
It was fate that brought Panda to you, Marianne. I doubt he would be the same great boy with someone else.
Hi,

You guys are too kind and I honestly don't think I had a secret forumula. Panda aka Robin just wanted to belong somewhere and feel loved. It helped that I had no small children in the home and so no distractions for those first couple months which really helped.I'm sure he would have endeared himself to anyone that showed him love.

Panda is only one rescue of the many, that have occurred since this site was started by Ron and Joan. We can't save them all but one by one is a start. Thanks to all those that took in rescues before I took in Panda as you also were a big part in it. You guys were my role models! I feel Panda and the others in some way belong to the entire forum as without everyone here they would not be in their forever homes. It was the forum members that gave him his new name too!

So a big thanks to all of you guys too!

One of my favorite photos of Panda (most of the time affectionally nicnamed Pig Pen

Wow. Though I'm at work I couldn't help it--had to read the whole story. Good thing I had a fresh box of tissues on my desk. What an amazing, inspiring, wonderful story. Big, big hugs to Panda, and to Marianne, too!

Hope we get to meet you when we're in Vancouver at the beginning of May.
