weight

We have a sheepie that was basically a "rescue". After treatment (and cure) for heartworms, we are still having a hard time putting weight on him. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Betsy and Puddy,
Welcome to the forum :D .

My Abbi is 5 years old and 73 lbs. The vet says she is perfect and I feed her twice a day with Nutro Max for large breeds and walk her at least a mile a day. Since I started walking her a mile or more she's put on 5 lbs.

When they get hot they sometimes compensate by not eating. Give lots of water, exercise and a good food and the weight just adjusts itself. (if you live in a hot humid climate you might consider keeping Puddy in a puppy clip)
Muscles weigh more than fat and is healthier. The dog's apetite will increase with exercise too. A good game of fetch, chase the leaves (birds, squirrels ,...) usually helps too.
And you may want to check Puddy out for worms ... if it is bad you will see them in his stools.
Hope to hear more from you. Heartworms and the cure take a lot out of a dog, so be patient. As he regains strength and stamina his appetite should also increase.
How old is Puddy and where does he live?
In the chit chat section you will find a post where we have all listed little bios of our sheepies, under Sheepie Survey. Maybe if you go through that it will give you some insights or suggestions  :?: . And feel free to contribute to the post or our pictures section! http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=554&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Puddy is approximately 2 years old according to the vet. We were given little information from the previous owner. We live in a small community west of Birmingham, AL. We currently have him in a puppy cut, as he was sooo matted when we got him, we had no choice. He is clear of all worms, just had him checked.
I guess mom is just impatient, as I want to see him healthy. He stands about waist high on me (I'm 5'6") and only weighs 62lbs. Maybe that is about normal, but he seems a little too thin to me.
Thank you for the suggestions, I may try a different type of food for him and maybe that will help.
I think they start packing on more pounds at age 3 or so. My middle child, Presley, was very think and "lanky". She started to fill out when she was 3-4 years old. She still only weighs 67 lbs or so - and is tall for a sheepie - but that's a good weight.

Then there's the oldest, Brittney, who filled out a little too much and is now a little too plump. She's a shorty and weighs 84!

My male, Oliver, weighed 95-100 lbs - but was a little on the heavy side too!

You're better off having them slim and trim - better for them - especially when they are older.
That's true. Abbi was 62 lbs at 2 too. She beefed up right after we came back home from Argentina... I know she was 62 because of the shipping limits of 100 lbs. with the crate.
Henry was 70 pounds at the time of his rescue -- he was approximately 1 year. He was found on April Fool's Day so that became his birthday, don't you think that is the perfect birthday for an OES.

I gave him the correct portion of dog food for his age and weight but he also got a frozen banana/peanut butter Kong every day when I left for work to distract him from my leaving and to bulk him up.

It took a couple of months but he stablized at 85 pounds. When freshly shaved you can count his ribs. He is the perfect weight, very sleek and happy.
