There are 3 sheepies on Petfinder that I would LOVE to have. Unfortunately -- I don't live in the right state (MN)! ![]() |
Grace,
Obsession isn't a bad thing! I became obsessed with getting a rescue a few years back. I would check the NEOESR website everyday and print pictures of the available dogs - but it never seemed to work out! Well, after a few years of this - the perfect little girl came into my life - I saw at the bottom of a sign-off on a LIst similar to this that NEOESR had a deaf sheepie mix puppy available (she hadn't made it to the website yet) and I jumped at the opportunity. When it's right - you'll know it! They seem to find you when they are meant to! Keep trying! Don't give up - rescuing a dog is one of the most gratifying experiences! Kristen |
Brit! OMG! A few YEARS?! ::falling off her chair:: You are a stronger woman than I! That's a long time - but you are right, the right one will come along when it is time. I'm just hoping mine doesn't take too long! ![]() Is she completely deaf? How is that going? Does she get on OK in her life? What kinds of things do you have to do to meet her special needs? |
Grace,
I had two other dogs to keep me at bay while I waited the two years for Sydney to find me! ![]() I wouldn't have been able to wait 2 years otherwise! Believe me - I don't have that much control! ![]() Sydney is 2 years old and is completely deaf! I have taught her hand signals and she gets along just fine. Actually, most times I have to tell people she's deaf (RIGHT, RON???). The difference is - I knew what I was getting into - so I was prepared and started off immediately with training class - using hand signals (I was in class with 10 or so other dogs (hearing) and instead of voice commands - we came up with hand signals (some ASL commands, some normal obedience commands, and some made up). It's been a wonderful lesson - and my next dog will be DEAF too (most likely!). Best of Luck in your search! Kristen |
It was a good thing that you told me, too, as I was starting to feel a little bit sad that Sydney didn't like me! After all, she wouldn't come to me when I called her. ![]() |
I would have told you sooner - but I thought you knew already! It was funny to see you keep at it though! ![]() She obviously liked you - she doesn't roll over for belly rubs from just anybody! ![]() Kristen |
I kept at it before you told me, because I refuse to be ignored. After you told me, I figured with patience, I could get her to hear again.
Seriously, I've always felt frustrated when I can't get a deaf dog's attention. With a hearing dog, call them and they'll come or at least look up at you to see what you want. With a deaf dog, it seems you have to wait until they feel like looking at you. Maybe in a quieter setting she'd be more attentive to motion and vibration? I've always admired people like you who have the incredible patience to work with a hearing impaired pooch. |

ROFL! Patience ??? Not sure I've ever been referred to as having that quality before! ![]() ![]() |
Brit and Ron -- you two are a hoot! LoL! ![]() I just found out that 'Charity' on PetFinder is also deaf. She is a beautiful girl! I can't get Charity for two reasons 1) I don't live in her state and 2) I teach life skills to the blind in my home. I can't imagine what things would be like around here with blind clients and a deaf dog! ![]() ![]() |
