It's the Major Announcement! Introducing... Bear!

Some of you may have noticed that I was interested in a dog from Petfinder that SheepieMum had posted as needing a home about a week ago. He was listed as an OES/Komondor mix and his name was Bear. I couldn’t get this guy out of my head so I filled out an application and bartered with James to let us try him out in our home. After a few sacrifices on my part, he agreed if the rescue would call be back.

Apparently Bear had TONS of applicants. My first contact with the rescue lady seemed pretty grim. It sounded like I was at the bottom of the list since I was 3 hours away. So, I was more than surprised when the foster mom called me the next afternoon. We talked for a long time and she said she had a couple of more applicants to talk to and she’d let me know in the next few days. I had an e-mail in my inbox waiting for me when I got into work in the morning asking if I would like to come down and meet him!

From the evening before until that morning e-mail, the foster mom was able to find out a lot more info on Bear. It turns out, he’s not a mix at all but a purebred AKC Komondor. A rescue contact of the foster mom knew the family he came from and had worked with his human mom to get him into Komondor rescue. He came from someone who had gotten a female and imported a male from Hungary to make big bucks breeding puppies. When it turned out to not be such a money making business, the breeder sold the female and had the male neutered and kept him. But at that time she would not put him into rescue unless they got the money back that they paid for him. Bear’s human mom had a female Kom that was a pretty guardy dog. She was picking on poor Bear and making his life miserable, to the point he wouldn't even come in the room if she was there.

The Komondor rescue lady went up to see him before she promised to help find a home for him, to see what his temperament was like. She said that he was a really sweet little guy and the first thing he did was run up to me and lick her! He would not mind the owner’s husband, would not come to him when he called him and sometimes growled at him. The rescue lady gave her some suggestions on how to solve the problem, but she didn't really seem interested. She really wanted another Kom that was very guardy like the female she has and Bear just wasn't fitting that bill. Finally, she called the rescue lady panicked because she thought Bear had gotten ringworm from her cat that she had taken to be bred. And at that time she was willing to give him away to get him out of the house because she could not afford to have him treated for the ringworm, which had already spread to her daughter. (This sounds like a great environment for an animal, huh?) Then the woman said she had found him a good home. A turn out the “good home” was a pound.

So, we went down there last to meet him (my friend Colleen, Clyde and me). He’s an absolute angel and he and Clyde immediately got along like brothers. He’s only 6 months old but he’s HUGE! He’s about 75 pounds and should really be about 10 pounds more. They played for a little while at the foster mom’s house, who was just great, and then just laid down next to each other, all relaxed. I couldn’t have asked for a better first meeting! He slept the whole 3 hour trip home and had a quiet night sleeping on the floor by our bed. It’s pretty hard to remember that he’s so young since he’s a giant. He had a potty accident because he didn’t know how to go down stairs this morning! But, he’s a smart guy and learned already. Clyde smashed him up against the wall and pushed him down. When he got to the bottom, he looked around like, hey, that wasn’t so bad! So, this afternoon has consisted of racing up and down the stairs, wrestling on the bed, and starting the whole process over again.

So far, everything’s great. He just had his first bath and I promise I’ll never complain about bathing an OES again! His coat is so dense I couldn’t even get him wet. An hour and a half in the tub and almost 2 hours of drying both Bear and I were done. It was the wettest dog bath that my bathroom ever suffered. He was about 50% successful in his attempts at hopping out of the tub during the bath! But now he’s clean and fluffy again! Bear even came with baby pictures, which I’ll post as soon as I can figure out why my scanner isn’t working.

Ok, enough talk. Here’s the new pics!

Bear after the bath-- I Photoshopped his shaved spot on his leg! ;)

How cute are these 2?

I like these playing shots but I really took them more for size comparison-- keep in mind, Clyde's a year older!

He's settling in already. He just helped himself to a bone from the toy box.

Here's another perspective one-- check how long that tail is. Our tables have already been cleared.

Excuse the messy house-- now I have 3 dogs to clean up after!

Yow ~ what a cool tail! He's only 6 months old? He's gonna be a big fellow! What a sweet face!

Yay Bear! Yay Jill! Yay Clyde!!

I don't see Lucy anywhere. How does she feel about Bear?
Bear already likes to swat her in the face but Clyde plays big brother and blocks her from him! She was lying in the corner relaxing while these 2 were goofing around-- just the way she likes it!
Congrats! :)
He is gonna be a big boy!
 :hearts: :clappurple: :high5:

YEAH! Jill worked her magic on James  Was there any doubt that Clyde would like Bear, Clyde likes everybody! I'm so happy for you, James and the clan of three :)
YEA!!!! :go: Bear is a cutie! :hearts:
Yowza!! He's gonna be huge!! What an adorable boy. It does sound like it's working out great! Lucy will be happy to have Clyde otherwise occupied, so she can get some rest.

I didn't quite follow the story. Is he the male that was imported from Hungary? Or a son of that breeding?

I'm so happy for you, Jill!!! :D
I told James that he can pretend like we're Cesar Millan and introduce people to "our pack."
Ohhhhh cute photos :D

I was playing with a Komondor when i went to crufts. :D
I think they are a great dog but they do have a very dense coat.

He's the son, so his daddy was from Hungary. I was told the Hungarian ones are larger than the American bred Koms so I think the intention was to make some really large dogs. They're working on trying to get me his papers so I have a copy of his pedigree.
That's great. Do you have any idea how big his dad is?
No, I don't know about him but the foster mom had a male in full coat that was 130 pounds and, no exaggeration, close to 3 feet wide. He was monstrous! If Bear's dad was bigger than him, I'm in for a huge food bill!
You're gonna need a bigger boat . . .

He is so pretty!!! Glad that Clyde has someone to play with....and that Lucy will be left alone..lol....why did they shave his leg? Was it for a ringworm test? He is going to be HUGE!! Send Bear over to dust my coffee table...its the perfect legnth and color...you'll be able to see the dust :D

Congrats Jill... :D :D
Yay for Jill and Yay for Bear!
I hope everything continues to go smoothly for you.
He's adorable!
Lots a awwwwws and giggles going on here!!!! Congratulations!!! But be careful how you throw around the word GIANT, Tasker is currently at his "winter weight" of 95lbs!!!!

I've got a big smile on my face. That is a pretty dog. He so looks like an OES to me, which makes him even more appealing!!! The pictures are great, and I laughed imagining this big boy and getting a bath. VERY CUTE :D :D Wow, 3 big dogs in the house. I can't imagine what it's like getting through a hallway.

His leg is shaved from the IV from his neuter. They went a little overboard! He never did get ringworm so that was only a false alarm, thank goodness.
Aw.w welcome home bear... You are cute
CONGRATS! Handsome fella (s)!

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh. I'M SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!! He is so CUTE! He makes Clyde look small. :D What a cool looking guy and he looks like a big, no huge cuddlebear. So he is named appropriately. Congratulations again on the new member of your "pack" Ms. Milan.

He's SO adorable! :hearts: Sounds like you're gonna have a lot of fun with him and Clyde. And what a good boy, Clyde, for protecting your big sister from the new kid on the block!
Chris
I've been awhile for a few days........Wow! Do you know how massive a male Kom is? Well, be prepared for a solid, wide dog. Poor Clyde will bounce off him, He'll be over 100 lbs, closer to 120 if you aren't careful.. and more if you aren't.....but a nice guy. Are you going to do the ropes or keep him clipped. I'd go for clipping since the ropes take DAYS to dry.

Lucky dog!!!!
WOW!!! He's adorable and I'm so glad everyone is getting along. Wish I could say that around here...

Lol. Yup, I know what I'm in for! I'd done a lot of reading on Komondors before I got Clyde because they were a breed that I was interested in getting but put out of mind after he came along. He's amazingly gentle for his size. The foster mom had her giant boy there when I got Bear. He was in full coat and looked like Cousin It with dreads. He was awesome! Since Bear is Hungarian, he should be even larger than the American Koms. This should be very interesting. :)

I'm going to try for cords but, given my inexperience, I expect a clipping will be in the future. He's just starting to get some matts on his flanks now so I'm going to start separating and rolling them. The bath yesterday showed me what I was in for with his puppy coat alone so I can't even imagine the drying time with the cords. I kind of figured that would be a good job for the groomer...
   I doubt very few groomers even know what a Kom is

I've heard of people try to untangle young ropes, gives me the shudders.

Koms are delightful dogs. You'll have a fine boy and I look forward to hearing about him and watching him grow.
 YAHOO
