Greenies strikes back with Facts about Greenies:

I'd rather this topic was locked, if possible. This is just to provide a resource for a fair balance of pro and anti greenie material.

[Note: After years of reports of dog injuries, Greenies modified their formula. Please see SUCCESS!!!!!! GREENIES CHANGES FORMULA! -ed.]

Respectfully, the purpose of a forum is not to make statements then lock them up so that they cannot be discussed.

I have read the above referenced website, which is published by the makers of Greenies. I have also read many of the hundreds of websites available, just a few of which are referenced below, written by broken hearted pet owners whose beloved animals have died after ingesting greenies.

We all make personal choices when it comes to the care and feeding of our animals. I'll use a toothbrush and toothpaste for the dental care of my pets and not risk their lives.

Excuse me, but the other post (look above a few posts) concerning greenies was locked. The appropriate place for this post would be right below it or attached to it.

I find most discussions about greenies, rawhides, etc tend to become overly emotional and we need to rely on the facts. Particularly when something potentially negative about a product comes out, you tend to find a lot of miscommunication and stretching of the truth. It's only fair to be represented equally, right? I encountered a dog forum a few weeks ago concerning the Diamond Pet Foods recall. They posted that Chicken Soup had also been recalled. Why? Because they weren't getting their info directly from Diamond, or they would have discovered that the reason for the recall was aflatoxin on the corn, which Chicken Soup does not have in it.

The greenies website gives you plenty of unbiased media sources concerning greenies, as well as opinions of many vets. I don't particularly care what you do or do not feed your dogs, I work at a pet store and I see people buy Dad's dog food every single day. The post was intended as a constructive piece of information to help you make an informed decision, not a "let's bash dog products" post.

Post what you want, I'm not going to argue or defend or anything of the sort. I felt it necessary that the information was made available for anyone who wanted to research it for themselves. Bottom line.
I think Greenies gets plenty of positive exposure at the pet store, and at the vet's offices, where there is an inherent conflict of interest; they are selling the product and it is very profitable to them. Just the fact that the product is sitting on the shelf at the vet is an endorsement.

The posts about greenies being harmful may not be scientifically accurate or representative of the complete picture as a random sampling, but most of them have no inherent conflict; they're just telling their story (with the exception of Burt's Cause, who's website owner is in the process of suing for millions of dollars.)

At our local independent pet store, I started a conversation with one of the clerks who swore up and down that there was NO PROBLEM with greenies, that there were BIG PROBLEMS with rawhides (which they also sell) but that you never see anything about rawhides on websites. I started to explain why that is (rawhides are generic, greenies are a specific product is part of the reason) but she absolutely turned me off, tuned me out and walked away... and I really have no dog in the hunt.

The manufacturer's website CERTAINLY has a conflict of interest and may be the single least reliable source of information on the issue. It would be like going to DuPont's website to look for information about environmental Teflon Poisoning.

Do you know that I have seen on the web at least 3 separate occasions when people published email replies from S&M NuTec. The people sent them links to Greenies surgery page, WARNING-VERY GRAPHIC!!! , and S&M replied saying that they are aware of that page and troubled by it, but that they don't know anything about that dog. There is a CONTACT US link on the top of it with an email address. How come they don't click it and send me an email and ask me about it? It is my supposition that either they don't want to know about it, or they are lying and they know exactly which dog that is. Either way, I feel that they are being disingenuous about it.

You do know that the pictures of the greenies being surgically removed from a dog's intestines is one of our own forum member's dogs, right? The manufacturer is actually advertising their "Truth" site on that page, so they are getting an opportunity to "rebut". Further, they can feel free to come in here and discuss their product.

...and there have been other threads discussing the issue on this forum, too.

So, I won't give a "free pass" to an advertising image campaign to S&M NuTec, but I'll gladly open up the topic for discussion again. Let them or their PR firm drop in and join the discussion.
I am really not trying to argue with you Susan over the "fine points" but I don't consider Ron's "announcement" a "locked post". Anyone is/was free to start a discussion about Greenies (and has) should they choose to. From my perspective the evidence is clear Greenies pose a real and present danger and a responsible pet owner will not use them. Of course the manufacturer disagrees.

The posts I presented are absolutely anecdotal, not scientific but that is proof enough for me. When I hear that 100 hundred (or more) dogs die from product X I pay attention My Vet has stopped selling them as has the Agway in my town. I am on another large dog forum and the popular opinion is overwhelmingly against using the product. There are people out there still purchasing them, other wise they would not still be manufacturing them.

As I said in my previous post, it is a personal choice and my choice is to find a safer way to maintain the dental health of my pet.
