Groomer say's we need to switch Hoover's food?

Hello,

We take Hoover to the groomer about twice a month for a bath and brush, and to trim him up a bit. When i picked him up this last time, the groomer pulled me aside and asked what am i feeding him as his coat is terrible! I was a bit annoyed as he has been coming to this groomer for about 6 months and this is the first time they mentioned this. I told her and she did not act surprised and said that is the answer they typically get.

From day one, we have fed our pup "Hills science diet large breed" and switched him to the adult large breed at 11 months. This is what the breeder fed her pup's so we figured it was good enough for our's.

So we are starting to do our research and finding that this food is actually not that good overall, and we are looking for suggestions on what to move him to. I did a search but did not really find what i was looking for.

I know we want something natural, but also something that will be good for his coat. OR should we be looking at suppliments for that?

Thanks in advance!

John, Aka Hoover's dad :)

Just because the groomer thinks that your pups coat isnt perfect doesnt mean that it isnt healthy. It may just be the coat or the groomer is just making stuff up. And just because it looks the way it does doesnt mean that your pup is on the wrong food or unhealthy. It may just be the way he is. I personally like science diet and they are very good. I feed Iams since that is what my pup grew up on when we got her from the breeder and so I stuck with that since I didnt want to throw in new food and stuff but she is still young. I would ask your vet before believing the groomer but thats just me. And if you think your pups coat is good then so be it. I dont knwo thats just my opinion.

There are a lot of things that can be going on.
Do you live near Hoovers breeder or someone else that has sheepies?
The sheepie coat is very different from most dogs and a lot of grromers see very few of them. One possibility is that the groomer just isn't that familiar with the coat. Maybe the breeder could take a look.
We use Natural Balance so I couldn't say one way or the other if that is causing a problem.
How old is Hoover? If the groomer is just now noticing, is he changing coats? Could it be the puppy fur dieing off and new coming in?
Also there is a possibility that the products and technique the groomer is using is damaging his coat.

P.S. Love the name. My dad used to call our first sheepie "Hoover" because he sucked up anything off the floor.
Hoover is a year and two months old.. It may be the puppy coat, it does seem that it is a bit thicker over the last month or so. We have been keeping him long, but had him trimmed a little in december and is due for another trim.

The breeder is quite a bit away (virginia), I meant to e-mail her and ask if she still feeds her pup's with the science diet, as i know she show's here pup's all the time.

The groomer we go to was recommended by a cousin of Hoovers (Gracie) and she has been going there for years. There is a third OES that also get's groomed there from time to time.

My sister works at the University of Penn vet and i asked her to speak with the dietitian. I want nothing but the best for him and want him healthy..

Here is a pic of when we first picked him up....

He is such a cutie.
Hope you find a solution. We all want our babies looking good.
My first OES lived to age 13 and ate Science Diet his whole life. I do think Science Diet is over rated now that I understand pet ingredients, but I wouldn't say the food is bad enough to cause a skin condition.

Welcome to the forum! Hoover is adorable! :D

There has been a lot of discussion comparing and contrasting different brands of food here. If you want to use the search tool above, you'll find many different threads to read through. It will help your research tremendously. :D
you can always try a dog food with natural oils in it to see if that makes a difference. Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice comes to mind. Or you can keep him on the SD and try a product called ShedX, which has omega 3, 6, and 9 in it. I personally would just switch dog foods, since you sound like you're looking for a change anyway.
