Cysts

Noticed a lump on Monty's belly (between his two front legs, in that area) Friday with some blood around it....noticed Saturday that it became a flat blackish matted mess...finally got into the vet yesterday and it was a rumptered cyst. The vet says that they aren't normal, but he has seen some. Now Monty is back on cephalexin in hopes that the little bump that is left will go away. Anyone else run into this before? Should I be worried (which I've been...Monty has been improving each day and this feels like a set back :( poor doggy) or doing something special to prevent this from happening again?

Bridget and Monty (such a sweety, the vet said he couldn't believe how good Monty was when he was cutting off the matted mess from his belly.....gosh I love this dog. OES rescue is by far the best decision I have ever made!! )

So sorry about Monty. Hannah recently had a tumor removed and we discovered a cyst under her chin and another tumor growing around her dew claw that we are "watching". No experience with what you mentioned. There are other posts here about cysts that might be helpful to you. How come they didn't remove what was left?

Hope Monty gets to feeling better soon!
The vet thought that since it ruptured and went down in size that there was a good chance the antibiotics would make it go away. I have to go back and see him in 2 weeks, if it is still there, they will have to cut out what is left. I'll be keeping a watchful eye on it.....poor guy.....it doesn't bother him though....or at least he isn't showing any signs of being bothered.
Sometime they can fill up again and burst again. If that happens that it is filling up again the vet will probably want to remove it so it does not keep happening. Hoping the antibiotics will dry it up for you and no surgery is needed.

Cysts are common but more common in older sheepies. Kelsey had that early last year a big one on her side and it kept coming up, rupturing, drying up then coming up again. So she had it removed completely and no problems since.

How old is monty?
brest wishes for you and the babe
Sending well wishes your way.

Blue has quite a few cyst on his body and the vet aspirates them with a needle every 6 months to check on their status. It's a bit different in your case however as Blue is 17 and too old for surgery. The kind he has are not dangerous. I'm sorry to hear what Monty had to go through. Lets hope those antibiotics clears it up.

Marianne and the boys
my brother english springer spannel had one last year between his toes (he was only two years old) 3 courses of antibiotics did not clear it up but after the sugery his as good as new so try not to worry i'm sure it will bbe ok

good luck

Thank you all for your help....I am feeling better about the situation. If it comes back though it is definitely getting cut out to be rid of it.

Monty was rescued back in December and the vet in KY said he was about 5 years old. Well, after my parents hung out with him (they have had three oes) and he got a chance to show his true personality, they think he is around 2 or 3 years old. Then I see that the older dogs get the cysts (more likely) but the younger dogs are more likely to pee (or piddle) in the car. ( I had written a topic in the behavior section about Monty peeing in the car ).....I wish I knew how old he was but I would like to think that he is around 2 or 3 years.
:(

we had a cyst on the top for our little girls head which we discovered when we first took her for her vaccinations, we monitored it and kept having it drained - however last january she was asleep when she suddenly yelped (something she never does) and blood was pouring down her head and ear. upon investigation we thought that the cyst had just burst its self open, so put her on antibiotics to clear up the wound and waited for it to heal its self.

however about a week after just as she had been given the all clear by the vet the wound started weeping and re opened, we decided then and there to have it properly removed and boy are we glad we did it turned out that the poor love had a massive ball of something (turned out to be ingrowing hair) in the top of her head. we had been showing her as well so imagine the pain she went through every time we back combed her head and she never ever flinched.

we are now one year on and she has a scar about 2 inches long on and has started to successfully grow her head hair back but we will always in future have a cyst removed just incase something like this happens again.

good luck but def advise having them removed .
Wow! Monty is lookin' great! What a sweet sheepie-face :D

Last year, Darby had a wound on her neck/chest that just would not heal even with a couple of rounds of antibiotics and ointment. We thought it was from running into something... it could have been something else. It wouldn't heal so after a month we asked if it should be surgically removed and sent off to be tested. Results came back as a non-cancerous tumor... it would scab over, then she'd scratch, opening it up again. After the surgery, it healed nicely and she's been fine since.

Please keep us posted on how he's doing! I'm so happy that he's been a great addition to your family :D
Hi there all I am new to this, can any one help I have a golden doodle who came home with us three days ago and is 10 weeks old, I took him to the vets yesterday for his vaccination and the vet noticed this lump on his head, he drain it of and said it may be when he played roughly with his litter, and said come back in a week but is has come back twice the size and you can feel the fluid, any advice would be great, pleeeeeeeeease
Just keep an eye on it till you go back and see the vet, if it bursts then go back earlier. Most of these when drained by a needle always fill up again. If it keeps doing this then it might have to be permantly removed by the vet. :D

Best wishes for your golden doodle :D
