Peeing in the car?

Monty is getting used to getting in and out of the car. I always take him for a pee before we leave to go anywhere (and he always goes), but I've been noticing that he pees in the car. Thank goodness I have a "pee-proof" seat cover, but I don't understand why he is doing this, nerves maybe? I don't drive crazy with him in the car. I'm wondering if anyone else has or has had this problem and if there was any insight on how to solve it? I'd hate to have him laying in his pee in the backseat without me knowing...what if we go on a long trip or something....

He's a cutie pie anyway....but we would love any ideas!! :)

I don't really have any experience with this. Is he really peeing or is it just a little spot? If it is a lot or just a little spot I would guess that he is either nervous or excited and loses control.

Either way he may get over it in time. Other people have suggested Rescue Remedy which might calm him if he is nervous.

Rescue Remedy? :?:
I'd say he is just over excited about going in the car. Puppy piddle. I had one that did that when young, loved the car and with the excitement of going in the car we had a few little accidents. Yep she would always have a piddle before she got in the car too. She outgrew it as she got a bit more mature.
have to agree with Lisa. it will go away.

It's made of flower esscences that are supposed to have a calming effect. I bought some for Clyde because he had separation anxiety as a pup but never wound up using it so I still have it on deck for an emergency situation.

Bach's Rescue Remedy. Available in health food stores (originally made for people) or on line. A little tiny bottle is "expensive" but you don't use much. Put a few drops on the tongue or inside cheek. Some people can put it in the dog's water.......mine run the other way.

If the wet spot is from the other end......slobber. ...try giving the pup a gingersnap or two before travel. Cure for motion sickness.

My baby Pirate did that until he was about a year and a half old. He'd pee and drool the whole time in the car, even if he had just pee'd before we got in.

I never knew if it was nerves or car sickness...but thankfully, he's outgrown it.

Good luck!
Hi,

I have a suggestion which may possibly work and at the expense your neighbors are going to think you are a little bit nuts. :D Sheesh I sound like a broken record and honestly don't mean to be...but after having so many dogs in my life I see some of my mistakes and have prevented repeating them with the new ones that come into my home. It's like having kids, the first one everything is experimental and with each one you learn what works and what you'd do differently with the next.

From the day, Merlin arrived as a pup. I took him out for car rides every single day. Just around the block most days, in order that he get used to it. He grew up to be a super good boy in cars. Panda was "ell and scared me so much...think it was me that woulda been peeing in the car! LOL! He was horrible, would lunge at passing cars, bark and become frantic...eww scary!

I started small baby steps with him. In and out of car...while it was parked. Lots of praise...good boy! Perhaps a treat. Next would be driving to the end of the block and back. Good boy!!! treat. Next...around the block...good boy!! He soon associated car rides with praise and good things. I always ended it on a postive note and this made a difference. Now I drive anywhere with all three of mine in the car with no problem..but it took a bit of patience.

Peeing like others suggested could be two things..either excitement or being scared. Nature's Rescue Remedy like suggested is awesome for calming down dogs and it's completely holistic and natural (people can take it too). Starting out with the car not moving may be the way you might want to start..like I suggested above...just in and out..praise. That's it. Next day...same thing..just slowly build it up to where your sheepie feels comfortable in a car.

The great thing about this forum is so many people have wonderful suggestions and sometimes it works for your dog. All dogs are different so what works for one may not work for another..you just have to find what "clicks" with yours. You can always try just sitting in the back with Monty and patting him for a few mins, eventually get someone to drive around the block. You need to do something a few times before they "get it".

The one thing which is a little off topic but others may find helpful..is most people don't think of taking their dogs in a car unless it's a vet appt. Doggie learns to associate car with vets. It's always good to have them used to cars and makes life easier to go to obedience, visit friends, trips or go on vacation.

Good luck to you!
