Illinois Dog Parks - Permits?

Hello -

Today we took Hendrix to the Mayslake Dog Park in Oak Brook. The park was nice, but they require a permit if you want to unleash your dog. I understand they need it for a maintenance fee, but the park isn't too close to our house and we were hoping to find a park near us that has no fee and it's fenced in.

What dog parks have you guys been to? Is there a permit fee? Is it fenced in? We live in Glendale Heights and there's a park here but it's not fenced in and I believe the permit is even more expensive then the $35 that Oakbrook charges.

Has anyone been to Jaycee Park in Deerfield? My parents will be watching Hendrix next month and they'd love to take him to that park. Again, just wondering if a permit is required. The park district websites provide no details on this type of stuff!

Thanks for your input!

I've visited the dog park in Deerfield on Wilmot Ave (I think that's Jaycee). It is a smaller park next to a kids' park and across from the pool. It's nice with a fence, gravel, grass, poop bags... Deerfield takes care of it's residents so I'm sure it's kept up nicely with high tax dollars. I'm almost positive there isn't a permit fee. I'm sure Hendrix would be happy there & your parents would get a kick out of it.

I think most other parks in Lake County do have permits either for the dog or for your cars.
I'm not sure about IL, but there is a nice dog park here in Jacksonville that charges $10 for a day or a fee/year. They require that every dog be unleashed Because it is supposed to help lesson any aggressiveness a dog may feel. I've heard nothing but good about the park but I haven't visited it personally. I know our animal shelter has a free dog park, so maybe one near you does, too?!
I found a great dog park 4-5 miles from our new home in Nashville. Nice fenced in area with necessary doggie poop bags and water. It's open to the public and no charge. It's part of a large park that has trails, nature center, baseball fields and even an equine area.

It took Daisy a while to adjust, the first time there was a week ago, and we have been almost every day since but today was the first time she really just ran around constantly.

The first thing she does though is to go up to the people there to get a quick pet, then she checks out the dogs around them. Of course, she has to keep coming back to make sure she knows where I am. She just loves it and I love her getting worn out enough to sleep for a couple of hours.
Stacy - I'll call over to the park in Deerfield and ask about the permit. I'll post on here what they say.

For Everyone, here's a state wide search for dog parks...

I have been to the dog park in Deerfield. There is no permit that I know of and it is free to take your dog there. The only thing I suggest if you go is do not go after it rains because it is all mud.
Also, stay in your car and check out how the dogs are acting before you take your dog in. One time I went there and there was a very aggressive dog there and he kept picking on Winston and the owner did nothing about it.

There is a wonderful dog park on Waukegan Rd. just north of route 22. in Lake County. I posted some photos of Winston there. It is 22 acres of land and they have trails and water for your dog to enjoy. It is a little costly though. It costs $10.00 each visit or I think it is $120.00 for a year with a permit. You do not need a permit for the daily fee.

But the park is wonderful. Your dog can be off the leash and it is fenced and your dog can play with many dogs. Winston has had lots of fun here.
The minute we drive in the parking lot he starts crying to get out and have some fun.
Look up the park district of Lake county in the net and it will show you all about the park and how to get there.
It is worth checking out.
We always go to a park that is out in St. Charles. There is no fee. It is off leash and seperated into two areas. One area is covered in mulch...so that is nice on wet days.

To get there you follow North Avenue out past Randall Road. You turn slightly to the left at Campton Hills Road. Continue past one stop sign and it is on your left. There are many athletic fields and a small public pool/water park also.

All the people we have met there are very nice, and all the dogs well behaved. We go almost every Saturday and Sunday morning.

Thanks you guys are SO helpful!
This is the letter I received in January about the new fees for all Cook County DFA's (Dog Friendly Areas):

January 12, 2006

Dear Dog Friendly Area Patron:

On May 20, 2005, the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control issued a regulation mandating that any dog entering a Chicago Park District Dog Friendly Area (DFA) wear a tag identifying that it is current on the following required vaccinations: Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, and Bordatella as well as having a current fecal test for parasites. Current titers where applicable will also be acceptable.
On July 27, 2005, the Chicago Park District presented a plan at a public meeting held at Margate Park. There were two main points of contention with our proposed plan: (1) the proposed $35 fee and (2) the additional requirement on dog owners to go to a Park District facility for a dog tag and permit.
Subsequently, the Park District held meetings with the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) which agreed that its members would issue the DFA permit just as they issue the County Rabies tag. This partnership is invaluable because it addresses the two main points raised at the community meeting. First, it lessened the District’s administrative costs thereby reducing the proposed $35 fee to $5 (per dog). Second, it created a “one-stop shop” where dog owners can now go to a veterinarian to get vaccinations, a County Rabies tag, a mail-in application for the City License and the DFA permit.
Please visit our website for more information at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com. Here are some highlights of the plan:
• Any dog entering a Chicago Park District DFA must have a valid DFA permit and tag.
• Permits and tags will be available exclusively at participating veterinary offices in Cook County as of February 1, 2006. A list of participating veterinarians will be posted on the Park District’s web-site as of January 23, 2006.
• The fee for a permit and tag will be $5 per dog.
• Enforcement of this plan, by the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control, will begin on March 1, 2006. Violators will face a fine of $500.
• Permits and tags must be renewed by January 1st of each year.
Our goal has been to create a permit process that has limited impact on dog owners, while continuing to maintain safe and accessible DFAs for the residents of the City of Chicago. Furthermore, this process will protect you and your pet, and strengthen Chicago’s recent title as “the Most Dog-Friendly City in the United States,” according to Dog Fancy Magazine.
If you have any questions regarding this permitting process, please feel free to call (312) 742-PLAY.

Sincerely,

Judy D. Martinez
Director of Intergovernmental and Community Affairs
ayyyup. That's dog friendly...

... ulness you are from outside of the area.
As a lifelong Lake County resident, I've been to many of the forest preserve dog parks here. I believe the one in Deerfield falls under that classification.

In Lake County, you can purchase a annual permit, or you can pay ($10) a day to visit. There's a "drop box" in the parking lot for the daily fee.

The dog parks up here are really nice, and I believe well worth the money.
Has anyone been to the one in Hinsdale - Katherine Legge memorial Park, there's no permit required, just wondering if it's fenced in.
I haven't been...I looked at the website and while it doesn't say explicitly...I would guess it isn't fenced in.
