Campground especially for the Dogs!

I know many of you like to go camping and take your furbabies along. I found this campground here in North Carolina that caters specifically to dog lovers.

There are two off leash dog parks, an off leash swimming pond, an off leash agility area, on leash hiking trails, a grooming area and many other amenities catering to the canines.

I can't wait to go and take the wigglebums this summer! They have full hookups, large campsites in a nice wooded area and even wifi access. And if you don't have a camper, they have cabins, too.

Here's the link --- you should come visit!!
www.4pawskingdom.com

It's close to the place where I'm taking the wigglebums for their herding instinct test in two weeks, so I'm going to go there and check it out in person that day. Will take some pics and post them.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
that is so cool, I am so jealous...we take the dogs camping, but they must remained tied and leashed at all times...and if you are careful you might be able to sneak a swim in with them as long as it is NOT the beach area.
oh my. even more of an excuse to move to north carolina!

Seriously! I love North Carolina. It has now moved up to the number one spot on my the-state-I-will-live-next list :D ('cause I think, at this point, I will never get to Chicago, Illinois  ).
This is seriously cool!

Mapquest says it's 11 hours 1 minute away, which means it's either 9 or 13 hours, LOL.

I'm still up for a group camping trip . . .
:clappurple: :clappurple: The wigglebums and I would LOVE for you all to come camping with us!! :clappurple: :clappurple:

I am really looking forward to checking it out. :D

The cabins look really nice, too, for those who don't like to "rough it". :D
This place does look seriously cool. Definitely a cabin, tents are for crazy people and Girl Scouts!

What's in North Carolina? This is a serious question...I don't really know much about it except every single car in my town has an OBX (outer banks) sticker and that Charlotte just got the NASCAR hall of fame bid to build there...My husband is in the process of deciding where to do residency and NC has come up...

Honestly, I don't know why I love the state. When I was in college NC was right there so we would travel over for shopping and such. And in highschool we would have our retreats there. I just always enjoyed visiting. But I've only been to the mtn region (Ashville and such.) I've been to Charlotte once.So I still have a lot of visiting to do.

Perhaps those members who live in NC would like to enlighten us on its wonders :D .

(Although can't you just see a 'Sheep of the Southeast' get-together at this campground 8) )
I was going to wait to chime in here to see what others who don't live here had to say. But, since I've often been accused of working for the N.C. board of tourism, I'll point out some highlights. :D

The topography is very similar to Virginia, Steph. The Blue Ridge, Smoky, and Appalachian Mountain ranges all run through the western portion of the state. Interesting things to see & do in this region include hiking the Appalachian trail, white water rafting, tons of camping areas, the Cherokee Indian reservation (which is a personal favorite) including the casino. The Asheville area has the Biltmore estate and has become a very "artsy" region. Lake Lure & Chimney Rock are in this area too. As well as Highlands which is a lovely little town with great golf courses.

Of course, there is also Boone where ASU is located -very fun little college town which is right next door to Blowing Rock - also a pretty little tourist town which features art festivals monthly in the summer. There are lovely parks and camping areas along the Blue Ridge parkway nearby, as well.

The central region called the piedmont or foothills is where I live. There are lots of lakes and golf courses in this area, too. Charlotte, of course, is NASCAR headquarters (which bores me to tears, personally, but is wildly popular here). But, there a lots of fun clubs & resturants there and good shopping!! Oh yeah- amusement park too -Carowinds.

Let's see....just east of this area is Raliegh, Durham, and Chapel Hill (the trifecta of college towns!). This area is growing so much it's hard to keep up with all there is to do there now.

Then, of course, the coastal region is flat and includes some great places to visit. The outerbanks are fabulous. Tour all seven of the lighthouses and see the outdoor play "The Lost Colony". Wilmington is a lovely historic port city. Moorehead City is as well. There are old plantations to visit...and of course, the beaches and golf courses. We've got tons of golf courses in this state, many of which are on the PGA circuit.

A lot of similar things as Virigina, as I mentioned, but without the NoVA pace. About the only place you'll find a similar fast pace is the Raleigh-Durham area and Charlotte.

And...the final and best reason to visit here...the wigglebums and I are here!! :D
Tammy, you've sold me! I think we should take all the sheepies to the Biltmore Estate! (Just picture it in your head before you let reality take over, LOL)

I guess I'm a crazy person Mandy - I like tent camping. I am, however, having a hard time picturing Bentley in a tent.

So, when do we leave?
Hey - I just noticed that the cabins are right by the tent area - I think that's a sign!
   That's a very funny vision, Jil!!   I can just see them racing through those huge halls and up the stairs...

Seriously - COME VISIT!! The campground would be a great location for a forum reunion!! :D
Tammy - that's it exactly! Carpets & fur flying everywhere. Unless there were spectators. I'd venture to say that butt skritches would need to be gotten before the fun started.

I'm totally serious about this! When would be a good time? I'm really only available mid-month until they get someone else in here (and I'm not holding my breath.)

I think I'll have to do a trial camping run close to home to see how to handle both dogs.
Beaureguard's Mom wrote:

Absolutly!!! Hmmm let's see... What time of the year would be best? I wouldn't be able to go anytime soon but sometime later this year (or next year if spring is the best time). :D
For me, I was looking at late summer, probably mid-August. It's hot as the hinges of Hades here that time of year, but in the mountains and in the shade, where these campsites are, it's still nice.

Is that too late for you?
You mean midmonth like now or midmonth anytime? March is almost over, middle of April is the Harrisburg show, Middle of May is the Philly picnic.
Then we skip to October and the beginning of October is the National down in Virginia.
So June, July, August and September; is that what we're looking at? My birthday is the middle of September so if we go then somebody's bringing me presents.

Oh and the east coast in July and August has two words associated with it, Hot and Humid!
Mid-September would be good, too. Not as hot as August, but still plenty warm enough to camp out. :D

Since I live closest, Mandy, I'll bake you a cake. :bdcake:
I just checked the reporting schedule and that's perfect! My last July report is due on Thursday the 10th.

How many days off should I request now, LOL?

And it's hot and humid in July & August in Michigan, too.

-----

I could do September too! Gotta come up with a birthday present though.
August might be okay for me. September would probably be better. But whatever month gets the most people. :D
Yeah Cake!!! WooHoo!!

So midSeptember is that the consensus? Saturday September 16th there's an obedience class, a mediterranean cooking class and a pizza pot luck.

We may have found a winner!
And a Mandy birthday party!

It works for me ~ this is going to be FUN!

I think I need a bigger tent.
Sounds good to me! :D

I'll have to drive home for my nephew's b-day party; he turns one that day. But, it's close enough that it won't be hard to do.

What kind of cake do you like, Mandy?
Chocolate with Peanut butter icing. (Let's get the important info out of the way first and foremost!)

So are we looking at the Weekend of September 15, 16, 17? The next weekend, all of the cabins are reserved and no Mandys in tents!!

Hey Ron, they give a "Happy Camper" discount! Hint, hint, hint!
I can do chocolate with peanut butter icing. :D :bdcake:

That weekend will work for me. I'll be in a camper. :D No tents for me either.

Ron, the Happie Camper would like it here!
Mmmmm, chocolate with peanut butter icing! That IS important!

Is this it - I'm gonna make my reservation now if it is.

 8) 8) 8)
Are you staying Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights? Or just Friday and Saturday?
Will you guys send me a piece of cake???? I LOVE chocolate and peanutbutter cake....Ill iron all of your camping gear 8O
Tammy, I'm thinking of staying Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, because the drive is an entire day. I'm debating coming Thursday and the deciding factor is whether I want to try to put the tent up by myself with two dogs hovering in the background!
If you want to come Thursday, Jil, let me know and I'll drive over & meet you & help you set up. :D

I'll make my reservations for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then and try to get a space nearest the tents & cabins. My brother is going to take his camper over & set it up for me to use. :D

And yes, Darcy, of course we'll save you some cake. :bdcake:
Yeah really. Exactly what days? Arrive Friday and Leave Monday morning? Arrive Thursday and leave Monday? What's looking good? Check in time looks to be 2 for regular campers and 3 for cabins. Thursday through Monday sounds good to me.

We also need to coordinate with the reservation people that we need sites relatively close to each other.
Done! Thursday it is!

Slick move, not only borrowing a camper, but getting him to set it up, too!

I'm gonna make my reservations now!

Woo Hoo!
Cool, I'll do reservations when I get home!
Sounds good! :D

~FUN~FUN~FUN~
My reservation is being processed by their motivated staff, LOL.

I wrote Woo Hoo! in the comment field and had to shoo our GM manager away from my office while I filled out the form. He now thinks I'm crazy.

September 14-18, Jil, Bentley & hopefully Kayli will be camping in North Carolina!!

I definitely need a bigger tent.
We're going to have to have a sign made for this!
Their motivated staff are working my reservations, too!! :D
And are they aware that all us people are together? Do we have a code word or anything that we should use?
Maxmm wrote:

How about Crazy Sheepdog People...has a nice ring to it...

Wow, I leave this thread for a minute and all of a sudden there are 3 pages!
I was trying to think of something to put in the comment box about it being a group of sheepies, but I couldn't come up with anything quick enough - my fingers just wanted to hit the send button.

I've spent the rest of my morning looking at tents online. I'm not getting a thing done work-wise.

We definitely need a sign - with a Danita sheepie on it?
Oooohhh, Danita sheepdog!!

I'm in the design process, I'll leave a space for a graphic to be named later.
I did put in the comment section that I wanted to be as near the tents/cabins as possible. Perhaps when they see all Old English Sheepdogs in the "What breed of dog are you bringing" question, they'll put 2 & 2 together? :?

Great idea for a sign! Danita sheepie or maybe Arnfinn will draw us a sheepie in a tent? :D

So, Steph....are ya coming?? Isabella?? 8)

I hope so! I won't be able to make a reservation for a bit so if a cabin is still open then I'll be there (I am not a camp-in-a-tent girl!)
You guys are all wimps, LOL!

On the other hand, I might have totally overdone it this time - we'll see. 8O Just make sure you all have cameras with charged batteries and lots of room on the memory card!
Hmmm, I'll have to bring this up with Cam...I LOVE camping, though! Bring on the tent, the cabin's for wusses!
Tammy - you need site 34!!

I'm avoiding work today, I just don't feel like it ! :?
I wonder if I can amend my reservation? I put that I wanted a "pull through" site, just because it's a little simpler. My brother says he doesn't mind...either one is fine. So, I'll try to make a specific request. :D

I was thinking, Jil, if you didn't want to set up Thursday after driving all day, you could always come to my house that night and set up on Friday. Same for you Mandy if that works better for you. I know you've already put in your request for that night, but you can probably change it with no problem.

It's entirely up to you, though, just wanted to offer! :D
Hey, that's a sound, logical idea! Which means that I'll get to Rutherfordton and be totally geeked about setting up camp; I never was a sound, logical person. (I once drove home from school in a total blizzard - just because I had planned leave that day) I am going to try to talk myself into it, though.

Sites 31 & 32 are just across the road and they're pull throughs. It's hard to tell what's what with a drawing.
  I know the feeling   Seems like I'm always upside down & backwards myself.

I will make a specific site request when I get my confirmation back. :D
Yow! I just got a message that their reservation e-mail system crashed!
floofdog wrote:

Too many sheepdogs!

Maybe someone ought to call them and give them a "heads up" about what is being arranged here! Tell'em you're from oes.org. That'll get you nothing. But maybe they'll "seat" you together.

Joan and I are thinking about how far a drive that would be...
I'm giving them a call this morning once it reaches a decent hour. Hopefully I can wheel and deal a little group outing special, herding dog people to herding dog people.

Ron, how can you not come down? It's sheepdogs and camping at the same time. If we fix stuff while we're down there it's got all 3 of your websites covered!

The Happie Camper needs a new chapter to it's story! New sheepdog, new chapter. We spoke to Mulligan in the chat and he said his life long dream is to see the Carolinas.
I e-mailed them last night and they got right back with me saying the system has been fixed.

Ron, I'm with Mandy - how can you NOT come????

I'm leaving Kayli with Camp Michelle for this trip, but will take her on her OWN camping trip sometime this summer.
Did you make your reservations again, Jil?

I had a message from them, too, when I got in this morning. I think I'll wait for Mandy to call and see what she finds out before I try again. :D

I agree with Mandy & Jil, Ron -you really should come!! :D
Yup, I put 'em in again this morning. This time my comment said "The Sheepies Are Coming, The Sheepies Are Coming."

I figured if I waited to call I would forget - so let me know how it goes with you.
I really hope I can go. I've got everything else figured out.

I'll leave on thursday and stay with my grandma in Georgia that night. Then friday morning I'll arrive at the campground (mapquest says it's about 4 hours from her house). Then I'll leave sunday night and stay with my grandma. Then travel the 8 hours (10 with Louie) back to Florida on Monday. So all I have to pay for is the cabin and not a hotel.
That sounds great, Izzy. :D It really shouldn't take you as long as all that, though. It's only 10 hours to Orlando from here. :?
Beaureguard's Mom wrote:

Really, wow! But I want to be able to stop and see my grandmother. Cause I don't know if between now and then I'll have a chance.
Oh of course! Stop & visit - I was just mentioning it because I always find Mapquest time estimates to be off. :D
Beaureguard's Mom wrote:

You mean my estimate of 10 hours from Atlanta to Orlando (or vice versa)? I know that one to be accurate. I've driven it with him before  .
Yes....the way you're coming, your estimates are accurate. I don't go that way to Orlando, though. :D
Okay, I called the campground. I don't know who's weirder, us or them!

The lady on the phone was very excited that a bunch of sheepdogs were coming. She said that she already had one reservation from one girl and I quote, "The sheepies are coming, the sheepies are coming!" In an asian accent and a high pitched voice. I think we found our code word just put that in the comments section and they'll know we're together. She also said that she would like to snuggle some sheepdogs so prepare for snuggling.

Tammy, it does look like like you may want to make sure your reservation went through. She knew of 1 reservation but wasn't sure of others. She did say that confirmations come out withing 24 hours.

The lady said that they were going to have so much fun with us. I'm not sure she knows what she's in for!
Well, We're thinking about it...

It's about 900 miles each way for us; that's two 450 mile days each way.

That's a lot of driving.
Maxmm wrote:

How funny! I don't think she knows what's she's asking for either!

I'll submit my reservation request again, then. Thanks for checking, Mandy.

RON!! COME!! 900 miles isn't so bad. :D
Only ten hours from philly. . . . hmmm. . .
Come on down, Val!!
So I guess my reservation went through, LOL!!

Come on Ron & Val! How often do you have the opportunity to camp with sheepies and us?!?!
I'm almost always campy with you guyz!
I just spoke to Brigit with 4 Paws. Mandy wasn't kidding -she really is excited about us coming!! :D

I wanted to make sure it was okay for me to stop by next Saturday when I take the wigglebums for their herding test, since they don't really open until April 1st. She said she'd love to give me a tour! :D So, I'll take some pictures to share.

Steph, Ron, Val....let's go camping!!
Hey Val, there's always the possibilty of carpooling!
I just got my confirmation letter it looks absolutely normal until you get to the part where it says:
2 People
3 Sheepies

This could easily get out of control. I wonder if there are any wineries on the way down there?
Ok so. Let's say there is a worst case scenerio. All cabins are taken and if I want to go I'll have to rough it and use a tent. What would I need to have? This question is for you camping savvy people.
Jamie...all you need is a map to the nearest hotel that accepts dogs...tent????????
Darcy wrote:

I see we have the same view on tents!

But will they let me come visit and stuff if I'm not staying at the campground? (the owners)
isabella wrote:

1) A sense of humor
2) A reserve of sleep built up.
4) A tent.
3) A Sleeping bag.
4) Something soft for under your sleeping bag (foam cusion/cot/air mattress).
5) Toiletries.
6) Bug spray.
7) Cooler.
8 ) Canned food (Dinty Moore is a favorite)
9) CAN OPENER.
10) Flashlight and batteries (I recommend the new LED type of light)
11) Portable radio and/or TV
12) Reading materials.

Assuming that others allow you to use their campfire equipment to cook on... :D

If not....
13) Firewood (usually for sale at campground as well)
14) Cooking utensils (spatula, fork, tongs), a pot, pan, coffee pot.
15) Grate to fashion a grill from a fire ring.
16) Everything for the dog! Bowls, grooming equipment, toys, spare lead, rabies certificate and tag...

I'm not so sure that a tent camping trip is ideal for a beginner with a dog.. but you could surprise me! Find someone with whom to share a cabin!
Ron wrote:

  Yep! That's what I thought, too. So it's a cabin or I'll meet you guys some other time. :(
Hey Jamie - I've actually sort of thought of you & a tent and I've been meaning to see what I have that we can "share" to make it easier/cheaper for you!

I use an air mattress with sheets and use my sleeping bag as a blanket. Not exactly roughing it, but so what.

I MIGHT even have a spare tent - I'd have to go search in the garage, which is a scary thought, then put it up to see if it's still suitable.

Give me some time to go over my camping list and I'll get back to you!

Mandy - Bob's coming?! Yay!

This is going to be a loonnngggg six months!

Hey, when my boss got my time off request he asked me what those crazy sheepie people were up to NOW . . . :P
If my SIL and nephews don't come with me, you could stay in the camper with me, Jamie. But, I won't know about that for awhile and I hate to make you wait.

My confirmation says "pull-through campsite near all the other sheepies"

Jil...your boss is on to you!

Mandy, I have a funny imagine in my head of you, Bob, Val and FIVE sheepdogs in a car!!
I just checked the cabin reservations and two of the cabins are booked the 14th through the 17th.

I know Mandy has the one - who has the other one?

If it's not one of us - they're in t-r-o-u-b-l-e!
Before I booked, all cabins were available. Hopefully it is one of us or that person is so going to leave early!

Unsure about Bob. It's always safer to put 2 instead of 1. He's still trying to schedule tour dates during the picnic. I think he's scared!

And I would offer to share my cabin with you Jamie/Isabella/Enter and Sign in Please, but Val is quicker on the draw and has first dibs. Seeing as how the cabin comes with a grill and what appears to be modern facilities, you can always store and prepare your food with us. That would solve some problems. I have an air mattress that I could bring and I'll ask my mom if she still has her tent. I'm sure that between all of us we could wrangle up enough gear to get you through. So don't let lack of equipment or experience stop you. We've got enough of all of that!
just caught this thread and it's less than 6 hrs from here. Not sure if I can schedule this but am going to find out QUICKLY. would love to be there - l love camping/ Daisy has never been, but I do have tent, sleeping bag, small gas grill so am all set.
YEA!! I get to go!! :go:

Yeah! You should come. The more the merrier!!!
Loked at this thread when it first started and look what has happened! I checked out the website to see if I could take the boys and the new puppy and before I knew it, everyone was coming to NC :D

I haven't camped since high school so I don't know if I am up to trying it with 3 little boys and a sheepie puppy (one of the Miracle babies) I think we would come Saturday and Sunday. Can anyone help me out with camping tips if we come?

Lark
Great!! More sheepies are coming!! :D
DH just informed me that he would NOT sleep in a tent
I told him he better start looking at RV's
Anyone know about RV's? Ron- DId you post a link a while back?

Thanks!
Lark and the wild boys
Yes, my travel website is http://www.HappieCamper.com
There's a (very slow -- ok, nearly abandoned) forum just like this, as well as pictures from some of our trip.

Renting an RV for a weekend can be a great way to get into the lifestyle, or to just check it out.

A Class A (bus-style) rental will probably run you about $200 a day; a Class C (front looks like a van with the RV overhanging the fron) will be somewhat less, but the cabin will be less expensive! :D
Ron's right...the cabins look pretty nice and would be much cheaper than renting (or buying) an RV. Unless you think you might want to do more camping. 8)

Who knows? This could become an annual event! :D :D
I do believe the three cabins are all rented!

Mandy has one, Jamie has one and I don't know who has the third one.

Is it too soon to start packing up the van?

Well, it might be me (I did the webform but never received a confirmation) BUT then I was all excited and telling a girlfriend and she tells me that is the date she is planning her SURPRISE WEDDING. I'm happy for her but so bummed! (maybe it will fall through. . . )
Since it's a surprise wedding, can't she move it up or back a week?? I'd hate for you not to come!! (not to be selfish or anything! :D )
Maxmm wrote:

There are wineries all through Central VA...which I know you have to go through VA to get to NC...and some of them are actually pretty good!

Camping and wine! Sounds like a good time to me! I can't make any decisions until my husband knows his schedule for next school year...
Just talked to our nanny (who with her hubby are our kids surrogate grandparents!) she and I have talked her DH into coming on this adventure. He isn't too sure about having a dog in the tent but I promised the dog would stay in my tent

Now to convince my DH of the fun in the woods....
What the heck is a DH? I keep thinking designnated hitter like in baseball!
Dear Husband - although I could come up with something completely different for my ex . . .
Lol. I know! The H I knew, it was the D that I was making things up for!
ok, i just made my reservations to arrive on Fri and leave on Mon (still haven't confirmed this at work but will somehow make it, can always call in sick, right?) Am so excited to meet you guys, and I know Daisy will have a great time.
Jill, were you thinking demon husband, or maybe demented husband
Sure, something like that but a little different.

The definition of DH depends on the day
Woo Hoo LBJ!

Larkles, what can we do to help?!?! :)
Just made my reservation for a tent site. I only live an hour 1/2 away so I might not camp--but I couldn't miss out on the fun :D
I'm so excited about our camping trip!! :D

I'd better make myself a note now, though, so I don't forget to bake Mandy's cake! :bdcake:
Floofdog-I love that name!
Any suggestions for tents that sleep 5 people and are easy to put up? Any good camping websites out there to find things like sleeping bags or is Target good enough?

Thanks for your help!!
I haven't looked there for a tent, but I'd be really surprised if Wal-Mart didn't have some good tents at cheap prices. There is lotsa campers in this country. Probably in the back of the store near the shotguns and the other camping equipment.

I'm sure Dick's Sporting Goods has tents, since they have all that sort of outdoors equipment too.

Don't assume, however, that they have the best price on them all (especially Dick's they seem pricey) -- check around and online (including Amazon.com, but don't forget there will be shipping charges and for a tent it could be pricey!
I can't believe how many people are coming! I'm so excited... :go:
We're going camping with Jasper the weekend of the 9th in the Ozarks (Lake Catherine near Hot Springs, Arkansas). Anyone want to go camping then? :) I just hope the weather cooperates - it's a little chilly right now.
It's 11:53 on a Saturday morning and I've seen at least 3 North Carolina commercials on tv (and I haven't been watching tv very long).
They say "Start planning your North Carolina getaway today"

Way ahead of you, buddy. Way ahead :D
Since we were in the area for our herding instinct test (HA! see http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=7439 for the story), we went by 4 Paws Kingdom to meet the owners and take a tour.

Even though they are busy getting ready to open this coming weekend, Brigit took time with us to show us around and even a little play time in the dog park. 8) They're very excited about the sheepies coming!

This is the agility course and she gives lessons for those who are interested. Not quite finished (didn't get a pic), is a practice course nearby, with low-to-the-ground obstacles so you can see if your dog is even interested in agility.
Image

The swimming pond is fed by three springs and they test the water regularly - safe for people and dogs!
Image

The pavillion, the bath house and the dog park are all close to our camping sites.
Image

The bath house has a grooming station where two grooming tables will be and an indoor bathing facility for the dogs. The bath rooms for the people are private, too, which is very cool. They're not one big room with mutliple shower stalls but individual bathrooms. 8)
Image
Image

The pavillion overlooks the dog park, so you can eat your lunch or dinner there and watch the dogs play. The weekend we're there is a pizza pot luck and Medeterranian cooking classes there.
Image

The cabins & campfire area...
Image

..joins the tent camping area:

across the road from my campsite :D :

A few playtime in the dog park pictures for perspective - it's a big park.
If you look closely, you can see the cabins on the rear left - that's how close we are. You won't be able to see that in a month's time when the trees get their leaves back on. 8)
Image

BTW, the blonde lady whose face I never seem to get in a picture, is our host, Brigit.

Great. Thanks a LOT Tammy. I was JUST starting to calm down over this trip and here you go and post these pictures. You stinker, LOL!

The campground looks great! This is going to be SO MUCH FUN!!!

Exactly!! You have no idea how excited I am!!!! Is it September yet??
NO it's NOT!!!

It's still five and one half months away, darn it all!

I'm even looking forward to the drive . . . I've never been in that direction of the country.
Hey Tammy, I don't suppose you thought to ask who has that third cabin, did you?

If it's not one of us, they need to MOVE.
No, Jil, I didn't think to ask her. Sorry 'bout that! :?

It's such a pretty location. It'll be beautiful there in September. I'm already praying for good weather!! :D
You COULD call, Jil.....
Woo Hoo!!

I leave for NC three weeks from tomorrow!

That morning I'm dropping Kayli off at Camp Michelle and then Otis off for his radioactive iodine treatment for his hyper-thyroidism. This is the best treatment, but he'll be radioactive for 10 days or so, hence my leaving town in a hurry, LOL!

Then it's a two day meander down to North Carolina with Boo and I'm even looking forward to the drive. Charleston, WV is just a bit further than the halfway point, so we might be stopping there for the night.

Yay! Camping!!!!!
Woooohooooo!!!

It's almost time to go camping!! I can't wait!! :excited:

Y'all come on down!! :excited:
Watch out in West Virginia!
Drive Ssssslllloooowwwwlllyyyy. (slowly)
Guess I'm a little late in seeing this post!!! But what a great place. I'm sure you'll all have a great time. I see all the cabins are reserved for the weekend you are all going but I think I'll check it out another time. A tent is a little too rugged for me!! Have a great time.
Thanks for the WV info. Driving sssslllloooowwwwlllllyyyy is not something I'm very good at so I will have to practice!
Haha, I had to laugh when I saw the West Virginia comment. I didn't know people thought of WV as a speed trap. The speed limit is 70 on the interstate, and people still drive 80 8O ! The WV turnpike is has a lower speed limit, but I swear, no one that lives here follows it. The main headache right now is construction, they are widening the interstate and it's kinda a pain through Charleston! Have a safe and fun trip everyone! :D
Whew!!

Can't you not even use a radar detector in the Virginias, too? Or is just regular Virginia?

I knew there was a WV member, so I hoped I wasn't offended anyone!
We've actually only been through WV once. We were driving cross country and were taking 64 from St. Louis all the way through Virginia. So, we're tired and the day is getting late a little and we look at the map (we're in WV at this point) and we see what looks like a short cut from the main highway that looks like it will cut off a lot of time. It didn't! Windy roads, small towns with small speed limits...it took us forever!

So, I guess the moral of the story is...stick to the main highway! 8)
I'm not sure that I ever told you guys that I was coming! Maggie, Chummie and I have the 3rd cabin. With the good news about Chummie's condition, she has been cleared to travel! And I just traded in my tiny hatchback for a Honda Element, so we will be travelling in comfort!! Can't wait. The pictures look wonderful.
Yay! I was wondering if you'd make it, Val. I can't wait to give Chum a big 'ole hug!

I think we should start planning on who's bringing what. There's no sense everyone bringing everything.

I'll do breakfast for everyone one morning. How do pancakes sound?

You got the Element? Awesome!

Mandy, want to chime in and make fun of us and our Elements here all at once so you can kill two birds with one stone? By the way, I took what you said into consideration and I'm having the same mural painted on the hood of my car as Tom Green did to his dad's car.

Hee hee, I bet you're next...
That's great news, Val!! I'm so glad that Chummie has been cleared for travel!!

Now I have to go do a search on Honda Element to see what you'll be driving. :D

Pancakes sounds good to me, Jil. I just bought some maple syrup while I was in Vermont last week. I'll bring it with me.
I can't believe how many people like the Element!! When we test drove it I think it sat too high, had too many blind spots and they couldn't provided the side impact crash test ratings. (I was pretty concerned about that because it has no B post.) It's also a dork mobile!!!! :P (I tamed it down for the public forum, Jill!!!)

I have to go and buy my flannel now so that I'll fit in with the woodsy people.
P.S. If I here one banjo or see one severed head, I am so out of there!

I like how high it sits.

I agree re blind spots but I am used to that having had a new Beetle previously.

I just like that it seems spacious, configurable, and easy to clean. Regular SUVs seem sooo stuffy and too fancy for my tastes. And the element seems smaller and easier for the city than a van, plus it has AWD. I also like the forrester, but it felt too staid (even the turbo) for my tastes. The element's bouncy ride reminds me of the old Broncos and seems fun.

Also, Chum was able to get in and out easily on her own without a boost.

I am concerned about side impact. . .
We're dumping the suspension anyway so no worries on how high it sits for me, although I don't really notice it being that high! Honestly, the only time I notice blind spots is when I have the seats folded up against the sides, then I just pretend I'm driving a panel truck. ;) The dogs usually provide plenty of blind spots no matter what I'm driving anyway.

Val, if want to feel a seriously bouncy ride, put some big ol' 20" rims on there! That changes the ride soooo much. It feels like it has a sports cars' suspension without the handling but the bigger tires give me much better handling too.

I also like that, unlike a SUV, the floor is much lower so the dogs aren't hanging over my shoulder like they do in their Jeep. The Element isn't built on a truck chassis like SUVs are so that's why it has a more carlike ride.

As far as side impact, just don't get hit. Geez, that was an easy one.

I was intrigued by the idea when you showed me yours -- but what do you do about the spare? Does a 20 inch tire fit in the compartment?
Oh gosh... what has the world come to when they're talking such expensive rims on a Honda.... I know, I know...but the whole tuner thing just escapes me.

I have 22.5" wheels on my 29,710 pound motorhome. Wanna modify the Element to take those? They are Alcoa Aluminums, at about $4,000 a set. Cheap compared to some nice spinners!

It doesn't matter. The larger wheel still has the same rolling diameter and the correct offset so you can stick your stock spare back on until you get your good one fixed. Other than a bouncier tire since the other ones are more of a low profile tire), there won't be too much of a difference other than looking stupid!

I posted some more pics so you can see my wheels up close.
I don't understand the physics involved, but I was told that if you increase the size of the rim, you need to increase the brakes. It doesn't make sense to me as the overall diameter of the rim+tire is about the same, but that's what I was told.

It wouldn't hurt. You can tell the difference but there's no danger of not stopping or anything in my case. I can almost guarantee I'll be going through pads faster though. I'm hoping I can find a better performance pad rather than having to upgrade to a big brake kit. Those are never cheap. :(
What dates are people planning to arrive and depart? I want to make sure we are in sync. . .
I'm arriving on Friday, with Jil, and leaving on Monday. :D
Friday
Friday
Friday

As early as we can Tammy!

:excited:
:excited:
:excited:

I was originally arriving Thursday, but I Jamie can't come so Boo & I took her cabin (we're bummed she's not coming!) and it's not available till Friday.
I think I booked my cabin for Thursday through Monday. I'll have to call and check. If everyone else is getting there on Friday, that's what I'll plan for.
Excellent! I have a cabin thurs through monday so I am hoping someone will arrive on thursday with me! Jil -- you can share for the night if that helps entice you to come earlier. . .
There might be trouble people!! They don't think I'll be able to get off work for the campout! They should let me know by the end of the day.

I've been going back and forth on the trip too. One minute I'm buying a new sleeping bag and the next I'm worrying about Toby's coat out in the wilderness.

Standby for update! :?
Oh no!! It's not the jerk again is it? I was thinking about him this morning. (What a waste of my time, LOL!)

What about your chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting?????
Oh no! I really hope you can make it. . .
Yup, it's the jerk again! He has also tried to put in for vacation time the same time I am supposed to go to the National. While both of mine were in first, he has seniority. (One reason I hate the government method!)
I need to quit and do sound full time! Then I can make my own schedule! :x

I want chocolate cake with peanut butter icing!!! This birthday is gonna suck!
OH NO!! Stuipd JERK!!

I hope you can still come, Mandy!! We'll be so disappointed if you can't make it. :(

We'd hate to have to eat your birthday cake without you.
I have had to cancel out of the trip this weekend. I have just accepted a new position and can hardly ask for time off after 2 weeks.

I was really tempted to tell them up front that I had to take this time off, but right now, getting a job (and paycheck) were more important than the camping trip since I quit my job I moved to Nashville to take after 2 mos, and that was 4 1/2 mos ago, so I didn't say anything.

Hope everyone has a great time so that they plan to do it again next year when I can hopefully join you. Can't wait to see the pics.
Let me know if anyone can't go. Maybe I'll fill in.
Okay Mandy, what's the verdict? :lmt:

Boo & I are going to be VERY disappointed if you can't make it.

LOL, I'm almost afraid to hear your answer.
Be afraid, it's not good.
The jerk said he is unflexible so I have to stay here. Grrrrr!! On the bright side, they may be trying to placate me because I just got an award of close to a thousand dollars!!!!!! I love the government! So not only will I be sitting at home but I'll be doing it with extra money.

Jill, you want my cabin before I call and cancel it? I'll lose the deposit anyway so if you take it it'll only cost you half as much. I also hear that there's going to be chocolate cake with peanut butter icing.
And another thing. There are now 4 lasagnas in my freezer with nowhere to go. THAT's RIGHT PEOPLE, I cooked for this occassion and now I'll have to eat it. D'oh!!!!!! Maybe I'll do some more baking involving brownies and laxatives and bring them to work. He might have gotten the time off but he won't enjoy it! (Disclaimer: I have no intention of doing this and if he does get sick it is so not my fault!!!!!!!!)

Jill, if you take my cabin, you guys could leave Wednesday morning and be at my house by Wednesday night because Kix is playing here again!!!
First the Michigan picnic and now this. I think Jil is the jinx!!!!!!!!
Well, I can't say I'm surprised. What a jerk. I will deny ever saying this but I think you should bake some brownies and take them in to the office.

Jill, if you come and stop by Mandy's on the way, bring the lasagna . . .
ljb - sorry, didn't mean to ignore you. What a bummer you can't come, but congrats on the job!!!
Oh No!!

What a rotten system that he can just take your time off like this at the last minute.

I'm so bummed that you can't make it, Mandy. :( I'm trying to figure out how to get your birthday cake to you? :?

Jill - do you think you can come? And bring the lasagna?

ljbrigham - I was afraid you might not get time off so soon when you said you were switching jobs. Darn jobs! They really get in the way of life! :x
floofdog wrote:

YEAH! 8O Sorry for tuning you out!!

At least I share your pain! It seems campers are dropping like flies!!! People, if you hear a strange noise in the woods, don't stay to investigate, run like the wind! Same goes for banjo music!
BTW, Mandy - what was the $1000 reward for? :? Inquiring minds... :D
Beaureguard's Mom wrote:

Because I rock!!!!!
But of course!! I should have known!! 8)
Jill!! Join us!! That would help take the sting out of the other defections. . .

Maggie, Chumley and I will be there on Thursday.
I have an event that I have to be at work or on Friday and that may well mess everything up.

Jil, how long is the drive for us?
Here's the real story, just in case anybody cares. :D When a supervisor or whoever decides that someone has done a great job they can nominate them for an award. They range from toys like umbrellas and cups to big time cash, like thousands of dollars. It was actually a 750 dollar award for being a rockin', life saving, cool dispatcher and a 150 dollar safety award because no one in the department got hurt. (AKA known of the cops shot themselves! )
So I guess I'll just spend my time shopping.

I actually went and checked to see what airfares would be from Harrisburg to North Carolina figuring the flight wouldn't be that long and I could spend my 2 regular days off with you guys but the airfares were between 500 and 800 bucks! 8O I guess aircraft fuel is pretty expensive!

Jill, skip the event and go camping!!!
It's 11 hours. :?

Blow off work.

Tell them I said it was okay.
Come on Jill...get someone to cover for ya at work & come on down!!
Let me work on James. He likes to plan things and this is moving very fast for him. It's a long drive for me alone-- I could go crazy, especially with Clyde and Bear helping it along. I'll know by the end of the day.
Here's your script, Jill

"Honey, you ready for our trip on Friday?"
"What trip??!??"
"You know, the trip to NC. I told you I wanted to go weeks ago!"
"Oh yeah. Do we really have to?"
"I promised people, I can't back out now."
"OK...."
That's good stuff Ron!! ( A peak inside the mind of an evil genius. )
It's a no go, kids. It's just too soon. I have to be here Friday and James has to be in Monday since he has a new employee starting that he has to orient. On the plus side, James thought it looked like fun and the free wireless sold him on it. We're in for next year.
Darn. :(

At least you know you can come next year. :D
Woo Hoo!

We're going camping next year!!

The van is 98% packed and I'm ready to hit the road at 10:00 tomorrow morning. First I drop off Floof at Camp Michelle, then Otis gets dropped off for his radioactive iodine treatment for his hyper-thyroid. Whew. I'll be worried about him the entire trip.

On the way down, Bentley & I are meeting his first mom, Deb, in Columbus! It's been 14 months since we first met and I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

Woo Hoo!
Deb may not recognize the new & improved Bentley!! :D
This sounds like a great trip - I can't wait to hear the stories and see the pictures! have a great time!
We're here!!! It looks wonderful -- and you gotta love the free wireless Internet! :D

We had quite a day. It started with a trip to the dogpark in DC. Then to a dogpark in Richmond Virginia which was really lovely but it was rainy and no dogs were there. Then another dogpark in Winston-Salem which was wonderful. Lots of grass and shade trees. Picnic benches. Running water. And lots of dogs for Maggie to play with. She had a ball. She was leader of the pack of about 5 or 6 dogs running laps. One guy called her the Lamborghini. A woman said that her Weimeraner hasn't run like that in ages. It was a bit wet but I think that made it even more fun.

It was too dark to really see the campground but the cabin is very cute and cheerful. Looking forward to seeing more sheepies tomorrow!
I am so envious!!! :D :D :D

I'm glad your trip was safe.

HAVE A BLAST !!!!! :!: !!!!!

I'm going to create a folder in the photo gallery under events for the NC Camping Trip! *cough* hint hint *cough*

EDIT: Done!
Have a wonderful time!!
Have a great time this weekend.

Val,
Take lots of pictures!!!!
Wait a minute, Val! You came to Richmond...to a dogpark...AND DIDN'T LET ME KNOW!!!
I'm never speaking to you again!
By the way, where is there a dogpark in Richmond?
Have a fun and safe trip, wait...I'm not speaking to you...

I didn't know you were in Richmond!

We would have loved to have seen you.

"Barker Field" is a very nice dogpark located in William Byrd Park, near Dogwood Dell. It looked very well played in. Lots of toys scattered about.
