Food aggression

Milo is an absolutly wonderful dog. We love him as our own child...
BUT...
The one thing he seems to be giving us trouble with is food aggression. I don't know what to do. He will take food, including donuts, gently from your hand. We put treats on his nose and he waits to throw them and catch them. He isn't aggressive with other dogs eating out of their own dishes. He shows respect to them and to us at our dinner table, by remaining back...
BUT...
If anyone comes within 5 feet of his dish while he's eating, he growls, and barks and has even snapped at us. Once he's done eating he re-enters the living room with his head low, almost apologizing for his rude behavior.

He's Soooooo weird!!!!

That's Jack.

I've gotten to where I can scratch his rump while he eats. He doesn't like it but he doesn't growl. It's taken 9 months.

He does eat with the other dogs but nobody is going to threaten him while he eats. My DH or I is always with the dogs when they feed, PERIOD.

First step is to be able to hand feed him, which is where he is. Second: make sure he knows you are in charge of the food. Make him sit and wait for his bowl. When you set it down, keep in in stay for awhile. I even give another dog a bowl while Jack waits. Then I release him.

That's as far as we've gotten.

Also, for Jack, no toys. He is very protective of them. The few times Jack has found a bone or toy, I've had to bribe him with a cookie to make him let go; otherwise he snarls and growls at me.
I have begun holding his dish as he eats. He doesn't growl at me then. I have even put my fingers in while he's eating, I don't think he likes it, but he doesn't growl or snap. Its only when it is placed on the bench in his spot that he recacts in this way. i guess it is more of a my space intrusion or something.
Try a different spot for feeding, see if it gets the same reaction.
